Olympics - World's Fastest Man (100m)

he didn't look like he really hit his stride during the first 40. the second 40 he displayed a gear that no one else on the planet has. then he cruised the final 20... i'm betting the initial 40 wasn't any faster than Ben Johnson's...

Bolt's reaction time was the second slowest of the field... that's his one weakness. He'll be the first person to break the 9.6 barrier and may have done it last night if he ran through the finish line. What an amazing performance!

That boy is not right in the head. He doesn't seem to have a clue the magnitude of what he did and what he could possibly do. Unreal.

Also, one of his shoes wasn't even tied.

He ran so fast his feet got too hot; so immediately after the race, he had to remove his shoes to cool off his feet:

Actually: Moments after he blazed to a world record with one of the most astounding performances in Olympic history, Bolt was holding up his gold track spikes to the cameras, careful to display the Puma trademarks. No telling what he got from Puma for that premeditated stunt, but Bolt is nothing if not a loyal Puman.

I'd love to see a breakdown of his fastest 40 yard split...just for kicks.

That was entirely too easy. Can't wait to see his 200m.

A few days late, but I found his 10m splits at The Science of Sport . 4.65 second first 40m. His fastest 40 was 3.29 seconds, from 40 to 80 meters.

40 meters is approximately equal to 43.74 yards. So take that into account, as well as the differences between hand timed and electronically timed 40s, when trying to compare his times to football players.

Good to have that here though.

I did the calculations yesterday. By estimating he ran the last 3.75 meters at 11.35 m/s, he ran the 40 in about 4.35 seconds.

I had an argument with redbenn yesterday about if he was only running the 40 his time would still be the same or not. I'm tending to side with him now in that if he were to run the 40, his time would be lower.

IOC prez: Bolt should show respect

BEIJING (AP) -- IOC president Jacques Rogge criticized Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt on Thursday for showing a lack of respect to other competitors after his record-breaking gold medal performances in the 100 and 200 meters.
"That's not the way we perceive being a champion," Rogge said.
The International Olympic Committee chief hailed Bolt's stunning achievements in the two sprints, comparing him to American great Jesse Owens, but said Bolt should have cut out the look-at-me flaunting and acknowledged the other athletes.
"I have no problem with him doing a show," Rogge said in an interview with three international news agency reporters. "I think he should show more respect for his competitors and shake hands, give a tap on the shoulder to the other ones immediately after the finish and not make gestures like the one he made in the 100 meters."

"He still has to mature," Rogge said. "I would love him to show more respect for his competitors. That's not the way we perceive being a champion. But he will learn in time. He should shake hands with his competitors and not ignore them. He'll learn that sooner or later. But [he's] a great athlete, of course."

American sprinter Shawn Crawford, who crossed the line fourth in the 200 but was upgraded to the silver medal after the disqualifications of Wallace Spearmon and Churandy Martina, said he saw nothing wrong in Bolt's showboating celebrations.
"I guess there's mixed feelings among athletes," he said. "To me, I don't feel like he's being disrespectful. If this guy has worked his tail off, every day, on his knees throwing up like I was in practice, he deserves to dance."
