Sources: Ole Miss, QB Trinidad Chambliss reach deal for '26

Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss has agreed to a new deal that would have him return to the Rebels in 2026, if the NCAA approves his pending waiver for a sixth season of eligibility, sources told ESPN on Monday.

It's still unclear whether Chambliss will be eligible to play for the Rebels in 2026. Ole Miss filed a waiver petition for him to receive a sixth year of eligibility Nov. 16, and a decision will ultimately be made by the NCAA Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. There were indications last month that the NCAA needed more information for the waiver to be granted. There's no definitive timeline on when a decision will be made.

Ole Miss QB Chambliss faces complex process to get 6th year

The waiver itself -- like many NCAA eligibility issues -- is complex. But the gist is that Chambliss is asking for a medical redshirt for the 2022 season when he was at Ferris State. (He took a traditional redshirt season during his true freshman year there in 2021.)

Chambliss did not play any games in 2022. He is seeking the medical redshirt for that season as he dealt with persistent respiratory issues that ultimately led to surgery to remove his tonsils.

The initial feedback from the NCAA's case manager, delivered to Ole Miss on Dec. 8, indicated that the panel was not inclined to issue the waiver. It invited the school to submit additional information, as the committee wanted more contemporaneous medical documentation from 2022.

NCAA denies Ole Miss QB Chambliss' waiver for 6th year

The NCAA has denied Trinidad Chambliss a waiver for a sixth year of eligibility, the NCAA announced Friday afternoon.

The decision appears to end Chambliss' college career, although Ole Miss will appeal, according to Chambliss attorney Tom Mars. The school had previously filed a waiver request Nov. 16, and the decision is not a surprise because the NCAA initially delivered a verbal denial to the school in December.

Chambliss would have been one of the faces of college football next year, as he had been slated to return to Ole Miss. Instead, he'll likely be off to the NFL, where he's projected now as a Day 3 pick in April's draft, although his play in the College Football Playoff has raised the trajectory of his profile.

The NCAA's decision comes one day after Ole Miss lost to Miami in the CFP semifinals 31-27 on a touchdown with 18 seconds left in the game.

Ole Miss will need a quarterback for next season, as Chambliss had committed to return, pending the waiver.

Looks like Ole Miss is going to appeal. Guess Chambliss could be looking at a contract that pays him in excess of $5 million if he plays for them one more season. NFL projections are he will be a late pick or UDFA, so getting paid now definitely makes the most sense.

This demonstrates how odd the economics of college football have become. A quarterback making more money staying at Ole Miss than by going to the NFL. I have to think NFL revenue per team is much higher than SEC revenue per team, so where is the money coming from? Boosters I guess.

ESPN: Former Auburn quarterback Deuce Knight signed with Ole Miss on Sunday, sources confirmed to ESPN, giving the No. 6 Rebels a potential starter for 2026 if Trinidad Chambliss doesn't win his fight for a sixth season of eligibility.

Knight, from Lucedale, Mississippi, was ranked the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2025. He committed to Notre Dame in September 2023 before flipping to Auburn, where he played in two games this past season.

The 6-foot-4, 217-pound signal-caller spent much of the 2025 season sitting behind Jackson Arnold and Ashton Daniels. He did start in the Tigers' 62-17 victory against FCS program Mercer on Nov. 22, completing 15 of 20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns, while running for 162 yards and four scores.

Knight entered the transfer portal after new Auburn coach Alex Golesh brought in Byrum Brown, his former starting quarterback at South Florida.
