Rams? Pace dealing with concussion

Thursday, September 28, 2006

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Orlando Pace made a rapid return from a concussion to the St. Louis Rams? lineup last week.
But the seven-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle from Ohio State was extremely limited in practice because of post-concussion syndrome yesterday and again will be listed as questionable this week. Coach Scott Linehan said it?ll be a day-to-day proposition this week and probably for many weeks to come.
"This post-concussion syndrome is something that goes on and on and on for weeks," Linehan said. "We?ll just keep an eye on it."
The Rams would go with the same alignment they used after Pace was injured in week two if his symptoms do not subside. Left guard Todd Steussie moved to Pace?s left tackle spot and Adam Goldberg moved to left guard.
Richie Incognito moved to center from guard in week two after center Andy McCollum was lost for the season because of a knee injury. Pace was hurt on an extrapoint attempt in the second quarter in San Francisco when the 49 ers overloaded his side and bowled him over. He landed hard on his head.

Cooper touts playoff game

Tuesday, October 10, 2006 By LAUREN NELSON

Sports Writer
College football really needs a plus-one playoff game, former Ohio State coach John Cooper told the crowd assembled for the Cingular South 1st & 10 Club at Heron Lakes Country Club Monday night.
"I am one of those guys who thinks we need a one-game playoff after the BCS," said Cooper, who was the head coach at The Ohio State University for 13 years. "I hope that the winner of the Ohio State-Michigan game is undefeated, I hope USC runs the table and Florida stays undefeated. Throw in the winner of the West Virginia-Louisville game, and you've got chaos at the end of the year."
Cooper said the recently added 12th game will prevent that from happening, but he has a solution.
"You could generate a lot of money from that one playoff game. What they could do is take the money they make from the game, divide it up, and give each (Division) 1-A school an equal share," he said.
The monster sport that is fed by money would be appeased, Cooper said, and there would be no need to play the 12th game, which most large schools are filling with weak opponents.
However, Cooper wasn't opposed to softening up the schedule to pave the way to a national title.
"You have to schedule well. When Ohio State won the national championship, they played eight games in the state of Ohio, and two of their away games were against teams that didn't win six games," he said.
When it comes to tough schedules, Cooper has first-hand knowledge playing against arch-rival Michigan. Even though he has compiled a winning record of 111-43, he went 2-10-1 versus the Wolverines.
"Michigan was my Achilles' Heel up there," he said. "The year after I left, Ohio State went to Ann Arbor, and Michigan fumbled the ball four times. I called Lloyd Carr up and asked him why he didn't play like that when I was at Ohio State."
As for another rivalry, Auburn vs. Alabama, Cooper's words suggested that Alabama fans should hang in there.
"When you have two great schools like that, an Alabama and Auburn, Ohio State and Michigan, I think it runs in cycles," he said. "Five or six years in a row, a team might have the upper hand over another. Then you might have a swing in power."

Jealousy? Sour grapes? Trying to take away from Tressel's almost instant NC?

I don't think it's anything like that. I suspect he was the coach when those games were scheduled and he was never particularly good about scheduling power opponents, unlike his successor.

I read it as more of a comment along the lines that a lot of things have to fall into place in order to win a NC.

I've been as tough on Coop as anyone, 2-10-1 is impossible to forget....however, I don't think he was taking anything away from JT or the NC in this case.

Coop is hard to decipher sometimes...bitter or just that clumsy with words? Who knows...not really a big deal though and less of an issue as more time passes imo.

My Dad and I were just talking about this this morning. It seems obvious to me that Coach Cooper just never 'got it' as far as Ohio State's Tradition, History, & the Passionate Relationship that our fans have for the Program, not only simply for winning, but continuing to maintain and build those proud Traditions and that History while winning, and trying to do it 'the right way': i.e., "pround of our team in the classroom and on the football field"...hmmm, maybe that comment has stuck in Coop's craw (taking it as a slight against his efforts).

Anyway, Tressel obviously does 'get it', and embraces all that we as fans hold dear about tOSU (and it's obvious that he's not just the coach, but a fan himself as well) and therefore we embrace Coach Tress in a way that Coach Cooper never got to experience.

So, as it's been said, life moves on. I'm appreciative of that which Coach Cooper did add to tOSU and the part he played in an era that brougt us Eddie and Orlando and Robert Smith and many, many more, but I'm more thrilled than I can express to have Coach Tressel now and all he that brings to our University and team. It's great to be a Buckeye! :osu:

I thought it was 9 games in the state of Ohio? 8 home games, and one game in Cincinnati.

Anyway, it doesn't look to me as though Cooper is trying to take cheap shots at Tressel. He never seemed like a classless guy to me. It sounds to me like he's saying that he's giving that as an example of a time when a team used its schedule to its advantage.
