OL Luke Wypler (All B1G, All-American, Cleveland Browns)

College football: Last year provides fuel for Ohio State

While Ohio State’s football team was satisfying its appetite for breakfast on Thursday morning at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center its appetite for revenge was being sharpened.

The television in the room where the Buckeyes had gathered before their seventh day of spring practice was showing a 60-minute Big Ten Network version of OSU’s 42-27 loss to Michigan last season, which didn’t exactly earn rave reviews from that audience.

“That TV almost came down,” said OSU center Luke Wypler, who quickly admitted the overall reaction was not nearly that extreme.

“It happened. You’ve got to learn from it. It was good that it was there. We need to use it and get better every day,” he said. “I think it was a little extra motivation. Anytime you see those colors and hear that name, it definitely clicks with you and gets you going in the morning.”

If Ohio State does improve on its 11-2 record last season in the upcoming season, Wypler and the rest of the offensive line will play a big role in that change for the better.

Wypler, a 4-star recruit who was ranked the No. 1 player in New Jersey in his recruiting class, describes himself as a student of the game.

“I really love to study the game. That’s one of my biggest trademarks. Obviously, I’m not going to impress anyone with an elite frame or size but I think I do a really good job in the film room trying to get after it,” he said.

He says he has noticed an increased intensity in not just the offensive line but in the whole team this spring.

“The whole team last year, maybe we didn’t have what it took to get to the finish line and we all saw that. This year, even in spring practice, you can see the intensity.

“We don’t want to come up short ever again. I don’t think any of us want to have that sickening feeling in our stomach of not being able to make it to the goals we had set. Even though we might have worked hard last season, this season it’s just a different feeling and mentality. Even though you went hard, you can go harder.

“I’m able to see it every day. Guys are maybe bringing more than they did last year,” he said.

Luke is one of the strongest guys on the team, if not the strongest.

He's extremely competitive. And a great athlete - he never wrestled before freshman year and took 4th in the country @ 220 in post season tournament in Va. Helluva Lax player too. Plus the best sport - Rugby - the fear of God were in the eyes of opposition.

While last years performance could have been better - in some areas of play, notably snapping. Not one sack was given up by him nor did he have a holding call - to my knowledge.

He will kick ass this year - no doubt.

Go Buckeyes - see you Labor Day weekend

You speak as one who has inside info and this report excites me immensely. In fact, if your analysis is true, it may be one of the more encouraging things I’ve read all spring. The center is such an absolutely huge position. With Coach Frye coming in and our stable or RBs the best I can recall in a long time………wow. Feels like an offense that has been elite the last few years might get even better. That’s insane to think about but, clearly the run game can improve a lot and it would be the final piece needed.

Barring any surprises or injuries in preseason camp, Ohio State’s starting lineup up front already appears to be set: Paris Johnson Jr. at left tackle, Donovan Jackson at left guard, Luke Wypler at center, Matt Jones at right guard and Dawand Jones at right guard.

There’s no shortage of talent in that lineup – Johnson and Jackson were both five-star recruits, Wypler and Matt Jones were both rated as top-two centers in their recruiting classes and Dawand Jones is as physically gifted as any of them – and Day believes in all of their talent.

While the Buckeyes are replacing two starters from last season in Nicholas Petit-Frere and Thayer Munford, Ohio State returns three starters in Johnson, Wypler and Dawand Jones, though Johnson is moving from right guard to left tackle. Day believes their collective experience will be beneficial to the unit

Ryan Day said Luke Wypler, who had a boot on his foot after Saturday’s game, did not suffer a long-term injury.
