BUCKEYES IN THE DRAFT
Phones don't ring off hook for Bucks

Monday, April 28, 2008Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Kirk Barton's phone kept ringing, but he kept waiting for "the call."
"Every time your phone rings, you think you're getting drafted," Ohio State's former starting right tackle said Sunday.
"But it's some team checking in, making sure you graduated, making sure you're healthy, then their pick comes up and you fall past them. It was definitely a day filled with ups and downs."

RENEE SAUER | DISPATCH
"At least someone wanted me and was willing to give me a chance. But, oh man, was it a long day." ? Ohio State offensive tackle Kirk Barton

Though he tried to remain calm, Kirk Barton couldn't help but get upset as he watched the waning picks in the NFL draft yesterday. The Ohio State offensive tackle was projected to be taken anywhere from the fourth to the sixth round. But as the seventh round came and he was still sitting, undrafted, in his Canton home, Barton was suffering.
"It was hard, down towards the last 30, 20, 10 picks, wondering, 'Is it going to happen?' " Barton said.
It did happen, finally. Chicago drafted him with the 247th overall pick, with just five picks left in the draft.
He was the third and final Buckeyes player drafted. Defensive end Vernon Gholston went sixth overall to the New York Jets on Saturday, and linebacker Larry Grant was a seventh-round selection (214th overall) of San Francisco yesterday.

Man, I was hoping the 'Phins would draft Kirk around round 4. Going that late in the 7th round, he could be the steal of the draft! The Bears got some really good picks late in the draft:

Kellen Davis, TE 6th
Kirk Barton, OT 7th
Marcus Monk, WR 7th

Great drafting.

Yeah, good for the Bears. It's OK, buddy, you're in, now go out and get the last laugh!

Prop up, tear down

Kirk Barton's long Sunday was indicative of two long-standing problems I've seen in college and pro football.
I covered the NFL for five years and am entering my fifth year covering Ohio State, so I feel I have some perspective on these processes...
The first is the college awards system. It's not bad as a whole, but when it comes to linemen, it's flawed.
I say this because Barton was a first team All-American, as voted by the American Football Coaches Association. Now keep in mind, these are people who are supposed to be experts, it's not media flunkies, it's coaches.
So how does a player whom the coaches considered one of the two best offensive tackles in the nation almost go undrafted?

Bears bag five more draft picks
You knew the signing of fifth-round pick Kellen Davis earlier today was going to jump-start business for Cliff Stein.

Boy, did it.

The Bears also came to agreement with all five of the club?s seventh-round picks on contracts Friday night.

Defensive end Ervin Baldwin, guard Chester Adams, linebacker Joey LaRocque, offensive tackle Kirk Barton and wide receiver Marcus Monk all agreed to four-year deals.

That gives the Bears six of their 12 draft picks under contract.

I can't imagine it's all that common for a late 7th round pick to get signed to a 4 year deal.

Neither can I. YES.....that's what I'm talkin' about!!!!! Congratulations buddy, you deserve it! Pressures off...now go out and prove what being a Buckeye's all about! Hope and feel he's going to have a good solid career.

Yeah, I read that.

I don't follow typical NFL contracts closely. 5th-7th rounders are lucky just to make the roster their first year. That's why it seemed odd to me he'd be given a 4 year deal.

The number of years on an NFL contract does not matter one bit since they are not guaranteed (he can be cut at any time). It's the signing bonus that matters, and doubt it was very high.

As a matter of fact, I am surprised those guys agree to those deals. If they pan out, then they get paid very little for 4 years.

I suppose it's a little of both. The club agrees to a little more of a signing bonus if the player takes 4 years. That way the player gets a little more up front, and the team has a guy locked up for cheap if they chose or can cut him loose with not much lost.

First-team exposure

The Bears tested a rookie offensive tackle with the first team Wednesday morning, but it wasn't first-round pick Chris Williams, who remained sidelined with a lingering back issue.

They took a look at seventh-rounder Kirk Barton, who spelled John Tait briefly at right tackle.

''I was just giving John a little bit of a rest,'' said Barton, who noted the team is down to 10 healthy linemen, meaning everyone is getting lots of reps. ''You just have to come out here to get better every day.''

Barton, an All-America and All-Big Ten choice last fall at Ohio State, fell in the draft in part because of concerns about his right knee. He has proved to be fairly athletic.

''I don't really think about (the draft),'' he said. ''I'm fortunate I landed here.''
