Jonah Jackson Will Bring Talent, Toughness, Versatility To Ohio State
Stop me if you’ve heard this one… a guy walks into the transfer portal…
Since its inception a few months ago, the transfer portal has been more like a revolving door at Ohio State.
Players are coming and going at such a rate that the scorecard printed last week is already out of date.
But it hasn’t been all bad news on that front for the Buckeyes. They have landed two of the best transfers in the nation in sophomore quarterback Justin Fields from Georgia and graduate senior offensive lineman Jonah Jackson from Rutgers.
Fields transferred to Ohio State immediately this winter and took part in spring practice. You may have read about it.
Jackson, however, is finishing up his degree at Rutgers and will arrive at Ohio State before fall camp gets underway.
For a team that has lost four starters on the offensive line, Jackson’s arrival will be key. Named a captain last year, and with starting experience at both center and guard, and Honorable Mention All-Big Ten recognition to boot, he could step right into a starting role this season.
Jackson has essentially been telecommuting with the Ohio State coaches and strength staff while in New Jersey. He watched practices and attended meetings via an iPad. He may not have been on campus, but he was in attendance.
Knowing the terminology and the playbook before he arrives on campus will be an advantage. He will be able to hit the ground running, which is exactly what you want from graduate transfers.
There’s plenty more to like as well, according to offensive line coach Greg Studrawa.
“The fact that he’s really an intelligent, tough football player. That was the first thing I liked about him,” Studrawa said. “Then I watched him in our game block our guys last year and he did a helluva job. And I said, ‘Wow, that kid…’
“He was interested in us and we reached out to him and here’s an intelligent kid that’s really tough. Academic All-Big Ten. Honorable Mention All-Big Ten as a player. And to add a guy, we’re losing all that experience, to have a guy that now has three years of experience coming in, it was a huge bonus.”

JONAH JACKSON REGARDED AS LEADER, HARD WORKER, JOKER AND TRASH TALKER BY FORMER RUTGERS TEAMMATES
Even though he is now playing for one of their Big Ten East rivals, the men who represented Rutgers at Big Ten Media Days on Friday had nothing but good things to say about Jonah Jackson.
Jackson left Rutgers this offseason as a graduate transfer and is now competing for a starting spot on the offensive line at Ohio State, who plays at Rutgers on Nov. 16, but the Scarlet Knights still think highly of their former teammate and expect him to be successful as a Buckeye.
“Jonah’s a special dude,” Rutgers offensive lineman Zach Venesky said Friday in Chicago. “Ohio State having him, they’re getting a quality guy who’s just going to bring everything he has to the table and give them everything that he has, and they’re very lucky to get him.”
Jackson announced his decision to transfer to Ohio State for his final season of collegiate eligibility in February, about one month he informed Rutgers that he would leave the program. Rutgers coach Chris Ash said that while he wanted Jackson, the Scarlet Knights’ starting right guard and a team captain in 2018, to finish out his career at Rutgers, he wishes Jackson the best of luck and respected his decision to do what he thought was best for him.
“We were hoping he’d be a good senior captain for us and continue to develop, but he’s in a different program now,” said Ash, a former Ohio State assistant coach, who said he did not consult with Jackson on his decision to become a Buckeye. “He’s got to make the decision for what’s best for his future and his family and it wasn’t my place to try to advise him on those decisions. He made those on his own.”

LOTS of positive talk on Jonah Jackson so far, sounds like he's as advertised and more...like first team all B1G good. Music to my ears, really need him to play to that level.

If Michael Jordan came back, I see no way Jackson comes here. So it is a one-to-one comparison. And while I have a hard time seeing him match what I think Jordan would have been next year if he came back and flipped back to his natural guard position (maybe 1st team all-B1G and 2nd team AA), even if he is a 2nd/3rd team All-B1G caliber player, that's huge. It allows us to have Bowen be a guy who maybe doesn't start, but is the backup at 3 different spots (I think he'll be the backup LG, RG, and RT if he doesn't win a spot). I also hope he gets actual regular playing time on the right side of the line.

Hopefully. I just think MJ is a day two NFL draft pick if he came back. He was a 4th rounder after an off year playing unnaturally at center. 3rd rounder, and maybe outside shot at being a 2nd rounder, is certainly reasonable.
I'll be ecstatic if Jonah Jackson is a day 2 pick. I just assume he's more of a 5th round caliber player. Which even if he's that, it will be great for the line.

I think that Jordan might be the more talented player overall. But I think Jackson is more suited to play the interior. And he's going to be a road grader inside, I can't wait.
