OL Jim Cordle (Official Thread)

Cordle has opportunity of a lifetime
August, 24, 2013
By Kieran Darcy | ESPNNewYork.com

It sounds paradoxical, but if Jim Cordle has a good night against the Jets, you'll hardly notice him.

That's how it goes for centers in the NFL. And Cordle, who has never started a game in three years with the Giants, will start Saturday in the team's third preseason game.

Jim Cordle will start at center for the Giants on Saturday.

The regular starter, David Baas, suffered a knee injury last Sunday against the Colts. Cordle came on and played well in Baas' place, so coach Tom Coughlin elected to give Cordle a shot against the Jets, as opposed to shifting starting left guard Kevin Boothe to center.

"We're really excited about the way Cordle played the other night," Coughlin said earlier this week. "Hopefully he'll keep that going."

It's a huge opportunity for the 26-year-old, who went undrafted in 2010 despite being a three-year starter at Ohio State.

Cordle was signed by the Giants as an undrafted free agent in April 2010, spent all of his rookie season on the practice squad, and spent a chunk of the following season there as well. But he ended up playing in nine games in 2011, and all 16 games last year, in a reserve/special teams role.

"To be out there with the first group is exciting," Cordle said Thursday. "And for me, I still consider it playing for my job. Looking at it that way, it's an opportunity for me to do that."

With Baas also missing practice time during the offseason because of surgeries, Cordle got some reps with Eli Manning and the rest of the starters. Manning expressed confidence in Cordle on Thursday.

"Jimmy's done a good job and got a good number of snaps with him this spring, with Baas being out," Manning said. "I feel comfortable getting the snaps and he has a great knowledge of the offense in making the calls. I never really had to make any adjustments."

NY Giants offensive line dance continues as Jim Cordle sits
The current arrangement puts plenty of pressure on James Brewer, a third-year man who was once viewed as Big Blue’s future right tackle.
By Ralph Vacchiano / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Let the Giants’ offensive line reshuffling continue.

In the wake of last week’s O-line struggles against the Jets, the Giants will shake things up one more time in Thursday’s preseason finale in New England. Center Jim Cordle, who started in place of injured center David Baas (knee) last week, is out. James Brewer is in. Brewer lined up at left guard during the two practices this week, with regular left guard Kevin Boothe sliding to center. It’s likely that the Giants will use that configuration with rookie Justin Pugh at right tackle, Chris Snee at right guard and Will Beatty at left tackle on Thursday.

“We will have some combinations in there (Thursday) night,” Tom Coughlin said. “That’s just the way it is.”

Jim Cordle and O-line subs look to improve

Jim Cordle spoke about the offensive line improving off of last week's game against the Chiefs
Pat Flaherty sets the bar high for his offensive line.

So do the players at his position, but that doesn’t mean those looking from the outside do.

That was true last week when the Giants started center Jim Cordle and right guard James Brewer, who made their first and second career starts, respectively. Possibly in line for another start on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, Cordle knew the expectations going into the Week 4 loss on the road to the Kansas City Chiefs.

“We didn’t hold up to how we expected,” Cordle said Thursday. “But as players, sometimes we read some things, and it seemed like the expectation was very low. So we could only beat expectations…but [Tom] Coughlin said it was ‘OK.’ But we’ll get better.”

The head coach echoed those sentiments the day after the game.

“Those two guys [Cordle and Brewer] that everybody speculated about, they did OK,” Coughlin said. “They played against a very good front, and, for the most part, they did a good job. We did have a holding penalty up there, and there were some occasions where we could have obviously done a better job or finished a block better than we did. They scrapped, and I was pleased with what they accomplished. I wish, obviously, it would have been perfect, but they did OK.”

But “OK” has to be “better” in order for the Giants to get their first win.

Giants will look to Jim Cordle to replace David Baas at center
By Dave Hutchinson/The Star Ledger
on October 23, 2013

Giants center Jim Cordle unknowingly put on David Baas’ No. 64 jersey as he headed to practice Wednesday afternoon. The equipment guys had mistakenly hung Cordle’s No. 63 jersey in Baas’ locker stall and Baas’ jersey in Cordle’s locker.
Cordle didn’t even look at the number on the jersey as he put it on. It wasn’t until he headed to practice and someone said, "Hey Baas," that he realized it.

But with Baas being placed on season-ending injured reserve with a knee injury Wednesday, Cordle decided to wear Baas’ jersey for a portion of the practice.

"I guess it was fitting to wear his jersey for a little bit on this day," said Cordle, who’ll replace Baas as the starter. "It’s unfortunate. He’s the second guy (guard Chris Snee is the other) to be put on IR. This offensive line has been next man up."

Giants Q&A: Jim Cordle explains why he loves playing center
By Dave Hutchinson/The Star Ledger
on October 27, 2013

Giants center Jim Cordle has come from humble beginnings. He was an undrafted rookie out of Ohio State in 2010, where he started 33 games at guard, tackle and center.

He was cut twice by the Giants during his first two seasons and put on the practice squad.

On Sunday afternoon, Cordle begins with could be a lengthy stint as the Giants starting center when he replaces the injured veteran David Baas, who has been place injured reserve with a knee injury.

Cordle, a third-year pro, has already started three games this season – and played well — but each was in anticipation of Baas returning. Now, the job is his to lose.

The Lancaster, Ohio native sat down with The Star-Ledger last week:

Q. When did you start being center? It’s not usually the first position a kid wants to play growing up.
A. I started in the fourth grade. It was the first year our school had the program and I was the only one who could snap the ball to the quarterback. My junior and senior year in high school, I played pulling guard in the Wing-T offense.

Q. Why did you stay at center when you had a chance to play guard or tackle? Center is a demanding position.

Learning From Veterans, Giants Lineman Earns Trust and Playing Time
By TOM PEDULLA
Published: October 26, 2013

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — In a season filled with blunders for the one-win Giants, even the equipment staff is not immune.

When center Jim Cordle put on the jersey hanging at his locker Wednesday and hurried to the practice field, he quickly became a target for needling teammates. He had inadvertently worn No. 64, which belongs to David Baas, rather than his own 63, which was later found at Baas’s locker.

Cordle turned the situation into an impromptu tribute by continuing to wear the jersey that belonged to Baas, who was placed on injured reserve that day with a knee injury.

“Now, he’s really coaching me. It’s great that he’s going to be around,” said Cordle, who was signed by the Giants as an undrafted rookie out of Ohio State in 2010. He will make only his fourth N.F.L. start — all coming this season — in Sunday’s game at Philadelphia.

Injury update: McBride, Cordle banged up
November, 24, 2013
By Kieran Darcy | ESPN.com

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants cornerback Trumaine McBride and center Jim Cordle both left Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys due to injury.

McBride said he suffered a groin injury, but isn't sure how serious it is yet.

Coach Tom Coughlin said McBride's absence was felt. "It did hurt us because you see the shuffling around that had to take place to get the proper alignment to try and defend their three- and four-wide passing," Coughlin said.

Cordle suffered a knee injury. He said an initial X-ray was negative and it's not an ACL tear.

Jim Cordle says he has partially torn patellar tendon, will be re-evaluated Thursday

For the next few days, Jim Cordle will take 20 minutes out of every hour icing his left knee.

An MRI taken earlier Monday revealed a partially torn patellar tendon in his knee, one that caused him to exit after just 22 snaps in Sunday's loss to the Cowboys. Cordle will have the injury re-evaluated by doctors on Thursday but is still trying to prepare for Sunday, even if it seems unlikely.

"It's potentially something I could deal with," Cordle said. "The doctor is coming in Thursday to re-evaluate it. It really just depends on how it is then, based on how we go forward."

Cordle said he didn't think the injury was bad enough to require surgery at the moment, but could probably be fixed in an offseason procedure.

"It's not that bad right now, but I guess it depends on who is going to look at it," Cordle said. "It's definitely damaged but probably after the season it would require some attention."

Giants lose Jim Cordle for season
Updated: November 26, 2013
Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants starting center Jim Cordle's season is over, as the team placed him on injured reserve Tuesday.

Cordle sustained a patella tendon injury in Sunday's loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He joins fellow offensive linemen Chris Snee and David Baas on injured reserve.

Cordle's place on the roster was taken by Stephen Goodin, who has spent the entire season on the Giants' practice squad.

A third-year pro, Cordle has played in every game since the start of the 2012 season. After Baas hurt his neck, Cordle started three straight games, beginning Sept. 29 at Kansas City. Baas returned Oct. 21 against Minnesota but hurt his knee, and Cordle started the last four games.

Entering Week 12 of the NFL season, things were going well for Jim Cordle.

The former Lancaster and Ohio State offensive lineman, who entered 2013 without a professional start, was preparing to start his seventh game for the New York Giants. Cordle, who had been dealing with patellar tendonitis in his left knee for a considerable portion of his career, said he was feeling healthier than he had in the weeks leading up to the Nov. 24 game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Midway through the game, things took a turn for the worse. When planting hard on his left leg, the center felt “some crackles and immediate pain,” he said. A subsequent MRI revealed those crackles were the sound of a partial tear of his patellar tendon, which already was 90 percent degraded from the prolonged injury.

The Giants were forced to place Cordle on injured reserve, ending his season.

“It’s definitely frustrating because I had a nice run of starts and felt really good about my play, definitely confident about my ability to compete with anybody in the NFL and help us win games,” Cordle said. “It was just a tough weekend.

“I think I have a good shot at coming back and being the center going forward.”

Bloom-Carroll graduate and Tampa Bay tight end Tom Crabtree, the only other Fairfield County native seeing NFL snaps this season, also was placed on injured reserve after tearing his bicep in Week 12. The Buccaneers did not make Crabtree available for comment.

Cordle, a restricted free agent after this season, will have surgery to repair the tendon this week and then began a rehabilitation process that could take as long as nine months.

Although the injury — coupled with a lack of a contract — leaves Cordle uncertain about his NFL future, he appreciates his fickle relationship with injuries. He began starting for the Giants this season after injuries derailed incumbent starter David Baas, who is under contract through the 2015 season.

“It’s disappointing, but at the same time someone had to get injured for me to get to play as much as I did,” Cordle said. “Bass is expected to come back, (the Giants) could draft a center high, but I am just focusing on getting healthy and contributing however they give me an opportunity, if they do.”

Cooper on H.S. football: Giants' Jim Cordle helped shape Hasbrouck Heights' offensive line

Friday, December 6, 2013

CARMINE GALASSO/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER
Members of Hasbrouck Heights’ offensive line, from left, Ryan Palladino, Chris Verdi, Mauro Altamura, Justin Porzl and Dimitri Forde got invaluable lessons from Giant Jim Cordle.
HASBROUCK HEIGHTS – Jim Cordle’s impact on the Hasbrouck Heights football team can be and will be seen on every snap by the Aviators today.

The Giants’ center, now on injured reserve, worked with Aviators senior Chris Verdi on producing a "dead-ball" snap (the rear of the ball lifted) instead of a "spiral" snap (the front of the ball lifted) to put the ball in Aviators quarterback Darren Iurato’s hands precisely.

"Darren gets the laces in his hands to catch and it’s a lot easier," Verdi said. "He loves it."

Those were just some of the tiny nuances of offensive line play that Cordle helped the Aviators’ linemen with this season, and even though Cordle won’t be present as Hasbrouck Heights meets Pompton Lakes for the North 1, Group 1 title, he’ll be there in spirit.

"I wish I could be on the sidelines with the team," Cordle emailed, "but my knee surgery will keep me in bed. They are very deserving of a win [today]."
