OL Jim Cordle (Official Thread)

Enter Jim Cordle. The 2005 Lancaster graduate and New York Giant was active in town all week, hosting a youth football camp Friday and his annual Bowling With Buckeyes event Saturday. Both were part of his non-profit organization, the Cordle Cares Foundation. After participating in the bowling event Saturday, it's difficult not have a more softened stance on the Buckeyes.

The passion Cordle has for community service is evident. He's not just a pro athlete going through the motions because it makes him look good. The name of his organization is more than just catchy alliteration. It's true. He cares. It's easy to tell, as he took time Friday to talk with all the kids at the football camp. Saturday was the same: Signing more autographs, showing off his Super Bowl ring and talking with all the bowlers who were there from the Special Olympics and the Fairfield County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

Bowling with Buckeyes raised thousands of dollars for the Fairfield County Special Olympics (an exact amount wasn't available by press time). Another $2,500 was raised at Friday's football camp for cancer research.

"This is just what I love doing," Cordle said Friday.

Jimmy seems to be a lock at this point to make the roster...

Here are a few performances to keep in mind with an eye toward Friday's final roster cuts:

Who helped their cause?

Jim Cordle: He saw time at guard on Wednesday, which speaks to his versatility. He's already the team's backup center and a favorite of offensive line coach Pat Flaherty. Cordle isn't an amazing athlete, but he finds ways to make a difference (backup long snapper, kick-return duty, etc.).

OL (9) ? Will Beatty, Kevin Boothe, David Baas, Chris Snee, David Diehl, Sean Locklear, James Brewer, Mitch Petrus, Jim Cordle

Notes: I'm not sure Jim Cordle and Mitch Petrus showed enough during the summer to guarantee a spot, but Cordle plays center and that specialization helps. Petrus had a terrible summer and he could definitely be in trouble, but I?ll count on Jerry Reese to stick with his draft picks, as he usually does.

I'm not going to lie, at the last minute I swapped out McCants and added Cordle back. I just feel like Cordle can fill more holes on the line. Also, since McCants played poorly in the preseason, the Giants should be able to sneak him through waivers and stash him on their practice squad.

Giants RT David Diehl, Ahmad Bradshaw, Domenik Hixon leave Buccaneers game
By Alex Raskin | CBSSports.com
September 16, 2012

Giants right tackle David Diehl left Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first quarter with a right knee injury. Diehl was followed into the lockerroom by WR Domenik Hixon (concussion) and RB Ahmad Bradshaw (neck injury).

Diehl did walk off the field with the help of the Giants trainers. He was quickly ruled "out" for the remainder of the game.

Immediately after Diehl was hurt, left guard Kevin Boothe switched to right tackle while backup offensive lineman Jim Cordle came on to play left guard. Boothe is also the Giants' backup at center and right guard.

After holding penalties, Jim Cordle happy to still be a Giant
Wednesday December 5, 2012
By Tom Rock

Jim Cordle was initially upset that he let the team down. Then, after a while, he started to worry that he?d let himself and his NFL dreams down.

The backup offensive lineman was concerned he might not have a job to come back to this week after a pair of holding penalties on kickoff returns cost the Giants in Monday?s 17-16 loss to the Redskins. On some teams, mistakes like those would lead...

If Baas can't play, LG Kevin Boothe would likely switch to center and OG Jim Cordle would move into the starting lineup. Cordle played some for Snee on Sunday and predicted that the long-time Giant would be in uniform vs. the Ravens.

As for Cordle's performance, Gilbride seemed pleased.

?I mean, Jimmy tried,? Gilbride said. ?He battled, he fought, he gave it everything he had. When someone does that, I'm never disappointed.?

Brayden Vandyne wore an Ohio State jersey and was pumped up to see former Buckeyes lineman Jim Cordle on Thursday at Falls Elementary School.

However, football took a backseat to education, as Cordle was on hand to help kick off a literacy effort in the West Muskingum School District.

Cordle read books to more than 100 second-graders at Falls and Hopewell elementary schools and then sent every child home with a new book, ?The Hog Mollies,? courtesy of the 2nd & 7 Foundation.

The nonprofit group, which was started by former Buckeyes, aims to promote a love of reading among youth to help improve the results of the state?s third-grade reading tests. Cordle also made a commitment to donate $200 from his charity foundation, Cordle Cares, toward the purchase of library books in a deal with second-graders.

?If someone reads 10 books this year, I?ll give you $5,? Cordle told the students at Falls Elementary School, to a smattering of cheers. Then, he upped the ante, announcing the higher amount. ?But each of you will have to read 20 books for that.?

Cordle Cares Foundation to offer scholarships
Cordle: We want to reward people who 'pay it forward'

LANCASTER ? Regardless of how its done, Jim Cordle thinks it is important to give back.

That?s why the Cordle Cares Foundation is offering four $1,000 scholarships to Fairfield County high school seniors who volunteer and give back to the community.

?To volunteer and give your time is important,? said Cordle, a New York Giants player who graduated from Lancaster High School. ?It means a lot to whoever it benefits. Cordle Cares Foundation wanted to support people who pay it forward.?

Cordle said the scholarships will be awarded to students who have demonstrated service to the community, participated in extracurricular activities and excelled in their academic career.

?We decided to offer the scholarships to expand the foundation,? said Cordle. ?We wanted to encourage community service and volunteerism in the community... We wanted to offer scholarships because I received a full ride (to Ohio State University) and seeing my sister go through the process...its a finical burden.?

Jim Cordle trying to keep the 'pay it forward' legacy of Ohio State's Woody Hayes alive
By Alexandria Chapin

Published: Thursday, February 14, 2013

Although years removed from his time as a member of the Ohio State football team, New York Giants center and Super Bowl champion Jim Cordle is keeping strong ties to the central Ohio community through a ?pay it forward? attitude established by late OSU coach Woody Hayes.

But Cordle, who played for OSU from 2005-2009, started his charity work long before he was a Buckeye or a backup for the Giants.

Cordle?s passion for giving back started when he was a junior at Lancaster High School in Lancaster, Ohio, less than 40 minutes from the bustle of Columbus.

He had an extra credit project that required him to volunteer within the community.

?I went to a nursing home and volunteered in the Alzheimer?s unit and was just blown away,? Cordle said.

During his time at OSU, Cordle said former Buckeye football coach Jim Tressel kept Hayes' ?pay it forward? idea alive.

?It goes back to Woody Hayes, long before I was born,? Cordle said. ?When I got to Ohio State, Jim Tressel instilled that in us to ?pay it forward? and give back.?

Cordle said he also does charity work with the Giants, but he is very focused on his Ohio roots.

During his five years as a Buckeye, Cordle said he did a lot of volunteer work with him team, including reading to children and visiting hospitals.

?The whole charity idea was really instilled by coach Tressel and he continued that from Woody Hayes days and coach (Urban) Meyer is doing that now,? Cordle said.

New York Giants Tender Jim Cordle, Adrian Tracy and Justin Trattou
March 8th, 2013
By Dan Benton

medium_7979532979.jpg

On Thursday, defensive end Justin Trattou tweeted that he had re-signed with the New York Giants. As it turns out, that's not entirely accurate, although it's just a mere formality at this point. What actually happened is that the Giants have tendered all of their Exclusive Rights Free Agents (ERFA), including Trattou, offensive lineman Jim Cordle and defensive end Adrian Tracy.

Since all three players have accrued less than three NFL seasons, the Giants have "exclusive rights" to keep these players by tendering one-year, league minimum contracts. The players are unable to shop themselves around, and if offered a deal by the Giants, have to take it. The only other alternative to signing these tenders is to retire from the NFL.

Both Trattou and Tracy will likely compete with Adewale Ojomo for snaps as the #3 defensive end, with Tracy also receiving a few looks at linebacker. Meanwhile, Cordle will battle for a reserve role and is capable of playing every position along the offensive line, although he's better suited for both center and guard.

Unless a longer deal is reached, all three players will become unrestricted free agents following the 2013 season.
