When he first moved to Ohio State from his hometown of Klein, Texas, just north of Houston, J.B. Shugarts admitted there were moments when he was homesick. For starters, "there was about 20 inches of snow on the ground, and I'd never been in snow. And I was driving a car that didn't have front wheel drive." But these days, the junior offensive tackle calls Columbus home. If only he could find a place to score some fresh crawfish
Q: Three years removed from Texas, what's the one thing you miss most?
A: Well, it doesn't snow in Texas, at least where I'm from. Besides that, the only thing I really miss is the comfort of being around some of my close friends. I don't really have a lot of family there, but some of my friends' families I was used to seeing every other day, I miss them, too. But I call Columbus home now, though I'm a Texas native all the way.
Q: Has Facebook allowed you to better maintain those old friendships?
A: Definitely. It helps me keep in touch not just with friends, but I can even keep up with players - like the guys at some of our rival high schools, or some of the ones I played with in the Army All-American game. It's a pretty good thing as long as you use it right.
Q: Besides being an OSU football player, what is the best thing about living in Columbus?
A: I love the fall weather we get right before it gets real cold. And the springtime, I like that, too. Plus I like that everywhere you go here, and not just with the students on campus, it's all about Ohio State. The loyalty to the school is so great.
Q: Being a big fellow (6 feet 7, 297 pounds), is there a particular restaurant you prefer?
A: I love eating at Easy Living, a deli shop on Lane Ave. (owned by former OSU kicker Vlade Janakievski). It's a great, small, family-owned place, but it has a lot of tradition, a lot of people associated with Ohio State like to go there and eat. It's nothing crazy, just great sandwiches always made with fresh-cut meats.
