OL J.B. Shugarts (official thread)

Only boone returns when Shugarts is a frosh. Kerr is still developing (former walkon), will he be starter material? Only he and 4 current OL return in '09, and most are interior linemen.

The depth chart looks great to any tackle prospect.

Surprised JB said that about tOSU's depth chart.

Has he seen Michigan's? This kid could come in as a true frosh and be in the two deep at LT. We're losing Jake Long to the NFL after this season. Steve Schilling is more of a RT and while JB's former HS teammate Mark Ortmann has been coming along fairly well he's not in JB's leauge as an athlete.

Every coach has had ample opportunity to discuss the depth chart with J.B. when he visited each school. Don't you think the Michigan coaches have addressed this issue with J.B. at some point? And who is to say that is what he is going to base his decision on, anyways?

I don't think it is out of the question that Steve Rehring moves over to RT after Barton leaves. That could leave Boone (if he stays) at LT with Josh Kerr and Rehring and Skinner at RT. Boone, Rehring and Skinner are all Seniors the year that Shugarts and whatever other OL we bring in for 2008, so after a year in the 2-deep they can challeng for startng jobs.

Possible depth on the OL w/Shugarts:
LT: Boone SR - Kerr JR - Shugarts FR
LG: Mitchum SR - Blankenship SO/FR - 2008 OL
C: Cordle JR - Whaley SR - 2008 OL
RG: Smith SO - Person SR - Browning SO
RT: Rehring SR - Skinner SR - 2008 OL

A lot of upperclassmen once the 2008 class starts to file in. A lot of starting spots to compete for.

Fair enough. I thought it was something related to JB that I had missed. Thanks for the clarification and I will try not to be so sensitive next time.

Nope, you're cool, I temporarily got stoopid and made a senseless post, not relevant to much of anything at all. I have re-stated my actual point in my original post. Super_Mario, no doubt UM has a chance. Back to JB at this point please....

He wants to decide around the beginning of August, before his season starts...

the question is whether this is good, bad, or indifferent timing for osu.
you could say good in that typically, the longer it takes oos kids to decide, the greater the odds they go to osu. you could say bad in that since it appears that adams and brewster are going to play out the recruiting process, there won't be any members of the "block O" publically pulling him towards osu.

Question for the board - Obviously J.B. is a very talented player. Is J.B. a guy that you could see starting as a true or redshirt freshman (technically sound right now in all areas) or more of a guy that has a very upside but needs a year or two to become a starter at a top program (I know in part that depends on the depth situation of whatever school he chooses)?

Just wondering how important the "depth chart" issue may be. Thanks in advance.

I don't see JB as a starter as a true freshman, but he will likely be good enough to be in the 2-deep right away...

I think the depth chart issue is a big one for him... Kids are very confident in their abilities, but they all want to get on the field as quickly as possible deep down... From what we are hearing, JB feels that he might do that more quickly here...

It is not an ideal situation to have a True frosh start at T, b/c usually that means that you are very thin, and he will/could make lots of mistakes...

The thing is if you are going to have to start a frosh at T you would want a guy like Shugarts, Adams, or Long doing that for ya...

J.B. is very athletic and I could see him playing either tackle or guard. On one of his clips he is flying down the field trying to block for his RB...he was really moving. I could see him pulling at the guard position but he also has a great frame and feet to play tackle. I think tackle is more likely for J.B. but I wouldn't rule out guard.

JB is not very polished, if he thinks he's going to start at LT as a freshman he's not living in the real world. JB's would best be suited to take a redshirt IMO. It's very rare for offensive lineman to play as true freshman, even more rare for them to start, and usually when they do play early they are very advanced in their development for high schoolers- ala Sam Young or Andre Smith.

Good points...OL is probably the toughest position to project. Alex Boone was supposed to be the second coming, and while he played as a true freshman, he did not walk in and dominate like many projected...and he was as highly rated a prospect as OSU has landed this decade.
