The real story of Gavin Cupp's journey from Michigan State cut to Ohio State commit: Ohio State football recruiting
...
Asked at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago -- days after pulling Cupp's scholarship -- if he has a policy on prospects visiting after committing, Dantonio said: "I have a communication policy."
You have to see what Michigan State saw.
Dantonio saw an Ohio prospect named after Woody Hayes trying to impress Ohio State. He wasn't sure if the offer was coming, but Dantonio had to assume that Meyer could have Cupp if he wanted him.
Dantonio didn't know if the flip would happen this week or next year before National Signing Day, but it was a battle the Spartans couldn't fight. Cupp was Michigan State's last spot-holder on the offensive line, and Dantonio didn't have the ability to risk losing him to the Buckeyes. Ohio State gets Ohio kids. That's life.
So instead of trying to battle the Buckeyes for Cupp, Michigan State cut bait. They took a commitment from another Ohio lineman that wasn't on Ohio State's radar the next day. That prospect isn't as good as Cupp, but Michigan State wanted to just to avoid the risk. It's the safe play, but that means Michigan State's class got a little less good.
