Ohio State football: Latest recruit could help at several spots

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Ohio State's practice of recruiting players who could play multiple positions hasn't changed. The commitment of Darryl Baldwin is a good example.
Baldwin, 6 feet 6, 265 pounds, from Solon, Ohio, is seen as a defensive end in the mold of current Buckeye Cameron Heyward. But with 4.7-second speed in the 40-yard dash, Baldwin also has shown the ability to play tight end, says recruiting analyst Bill Kurelic.
Baldwin sees himself as a defensive end at the moment, and as a Buckeye in the near future, becoming the ninth commitment to the 2010 recruiting class.
"It was important to make this decision now to get it out of the way so I could focus on my high school senior year," said Baldwin, who carries a grade-point average of 3.6.
Ranked as the No. 5 prospect in the state by Kurelic, Baldwin said he picked OSU in part because "It is my home state and I didn't really want to leave it that badly. Besides that, I felt the most comfortable when I went down there to Ohio State.
"I felt like I fit in well, and I had a lot of friends down there. I fit in perfectly."
On the field, he could fit in at a couple of spots.
"He definitely is going to Ohio State as a defensive end, but if need be he could move to tight end and I am sure be an effective player there," Kurelic said. "When you look at the depth chart at defensive end, though, his second year at OSU Cameron Heyward and Thaddeus Gibson will be gone, and Baldwin could be a big factor by then."

Baldwin is a prospect who passes the eye test. He's a big kid with a nice wingspan who at times displays the ability to manhandle blockers. While he flashes the tools to be a tough defender, we would like to see him squeeze more out of his natural ability at times. If he does that, he could be a beast.
DE- Darryl Baldwin (Ohio State commit)- Solon- Baldwin did not play due to a bruised leg, but it should be noted that Baldwin has added plenty of bulk to his 6-foot-6 frame since Rivals.com AMP interviewed him in February.
