Solon boys basketball team has talent to succeed
Brian Lavrich/Sun News, December 08, 2009 5:59 p.m.

Solon boys basketball coach Sean Fisher is optimistic about the Comets this season.

"Our goals don't change much year to year," Fisher said. "We want to go undefeated in our home games, win a division title and a district title. "Those are all attainable goals."
...
By "new guys" Fisher really means old guys, as well. Fisher is referring to Darryl Baldwin, Jake Voigt, Kevin Hicks and Christian Jackson, who have been playing football for the Comets, who reached the Division I regional final. All but Jackson (junior) are seniors.
...
Baldwin, the Ohio State football recruit, and Voigt are returning starters. Baldwin (6-7) averaged 9.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game last year playing center while Voigt was the point guard who averaged six points per game. They should start again, along with power forward Goodwater.

Plain Dealer football Defensive Player of the Year: Darryl Baldwin, Solon
Bob Fortuna / Plain Dealer Reporter, December 18, 2009

Solon defensive end Darryl Baldwin was often double- or triple-teamed this past season. - (Scott Shaw / The Plain Dealer)

The numbers aren't eye-popping for Solon senior defensive end Darryl Baldwin, but there's a reason.

The Ohio State recruit was busy fending off two or three opposing players at a time, which allowed his teammates to gather spectacular statistics.

And there's more to The Plain Dealer's Football Defensive Player of the Year besides his 6-7, 265-pound frame. Baldwin is so quick and strong, teams planned their offensive strategy to run or pass away from him.

"I've always been one of the biggest kids at school but the last couple of seasons, I really had to adjust to being double-teamed," said Baldwin, who recorded 63 tackles, including 25 for loss, one caused fumble and one fumble recovery. "It made me work hard on my blocking technique, to get stronger, faster and quicker."

Nothing slowed Baldwin. Not even the severely sprained ankle he suffered in the first half of Solon's Division I, Region 1 quarterfinal win over Euclid.

"It really hurt at first," said Baldwin, who was on the sidelines with crutches during the second half of that game. "But there was no way I was going to miss the following week's game, so I iced that ankle a lot and worked a lot with the school trainer."

The next week, the Comets beat Mayfield, 13-10, in overtime, in a regional semifinal.

The Comets fell short in a 28-27 regional final against Glenville but Baldwin doesn't believe the season was a disappointment.

"We didn't make the postseason when I was junior and we talked about returning to that level as seniors," Baldwin said. "We did that, we had a 12-1 record, we also won the [Northeast Ohio ConferenceValley Division] championship and our wins over Mentor and Brunswick were huge. We hadn't beaten Mentor in five previous games and that was the first time the seniors ever beat Brunswick."

ALL-STAR TEAM

DEFENSIVEPLAYER OF THE YEAR

Darryl Baldwin, Solon Senior lineman

Height: 6-7. Weight: 265. College: Committed to Ohio State.

Notable: Two-way player has great hands and balance, and runs well for his size. Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division Co-Defensive Player of the Year accounted for 63 tackles with 25 stops being for loss of yardage. Also caused a fumble and had a fumble recovery despite being double- and triple-teamed most of the season.

If he is really 6'7" 265 lbs, he could end up in a Cam Heyward'esq role outside/in. I will say he is awfully mobile for someone his size.

Does anyone see a possible TE?, I like to think that he fills our needs at the strong side.

13. DARRYL BALDWIN

Solon (Ohio), DE, 6-5, 255

Highlights: 63 tackles, 25 for loss, one fumble recovery; on offense, seven catches for 142 yards, 2 TDs. Team was 10-0 in the regular season and 12-1, losing in regional finals.

Coach Jim McQuaide: ?As a defensive end he had to adjust this year to constant double- and even triple-team blocks. Darryl is a very skilled athlete for someone his size ? 6-7, 265 pounds. He runs well and has the ability to be a difference-maker on both sides of the ball. He was very committed to his teammates and doing whatever he could to make them better. He severely sprained his ankle in our first playoff game and worked as hard as anyone I have coached to come back and be able to play the next week.?

Committed: Ohio State.

Wow, just watched the recent film on this kid (thanks Buckskin) and I am very impressed. This kid is a tweener, in a good way, of the JT big speed and power catagories. He is very versatile as he looked very good at DE and obviously could grow into a DT with great quicks, but he also runs well and displayed very good hands, so he could be that blocking TE who could also catch some passes that we always seem to use or he could grow into a dominating O-lineman with great feet.

Scout $ - Baldwin Ready To Gain Weight, Get Started
By Adam Jardy
Posted Feb 4, 2010

Will be playing in the North-South & Big 33 all star games... Due to basketball, his weight is down a bit from the 265 lbs he played at last season... He's looking forward to seeing what gains he can make in size & strength once track wraps up... The coaches are only looking at him for defense as far as he knows...

Ohio State on Solon defensive end and new Buckeye Darryl Baldwin: Video
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer
February 04, 2010

Lots of the defensive ends the Buckeyes bring in, like Jamel Turner, J.T. Moore and maybe even David Durham in this class, are guys they see at the Leo position, guys who are quick and maybe a little smaller than other defensive ends and can both rush the passer and drop into coverage.

Solon's Darryl Baldwin is not that guy, and that's a good thing. Baldwin spoke today about his plans to play in the both the North-South All-Star Game and the Big 33 Game in the next few months. When he starts playing for the Buckeyes, it will be at a position where they need some more players.

"They pretty much have two different defensive end positions, one that can drop back and play linebacker and one that is strictly a defensive. They told me I'd pretty much be a defensive end," Baldwin said today.

Those ends are actually the key to the Ohio State defense, especially if those big ends can move inside and provide a pass rush as tackles on third down. Doug Worthington and Cameron Heyward are the comparisons mentioned by defensive line coach Jim Heacock and Baldwin. Worthington is gone and Heyward could be headed toward an All-American senior year, but Baldwin is the next guy in line to fill that role.

He's got TE written all over him. I'm anxious to see how big he gets in a year or two because I think he's got the potential to be a great OT if he can put on the size.

This kid somehow got the soft label, and people started writing him off as a TE. Not saying that those labels are unwarranted at that time, but kids change fast at this stage of their development, and I get the feeling that that assessment is going to carry as much water as the one claiming that Boren was going to be a third team MLB so the coaches can hide him somewhere on the roster, or that Coleman can't ever be effective because he bites too quickly on the playaction fake. Baldwin is a big time DL player, in the mode of Worthington and Heyward. That's what the coaches say, and that's good enough for me.

He's going to need to learn how to chop his steps better as he gets close to the ball. His film showed that his long strides allowed the ball carrier to make a move and get outside of him frequently. To his credit, Baldwin managed to get a hand on him and slow him down or drag him down, but he'll need to be more in control in college. That's the only glaring issue I see with him on defense. On offense, he'll need to run routes, but he seems to have the hands and athleticism to excel at TE.

I don't think "writing him off as a TE" is a slam on him. If anything, it speaks to his versatility.

ON DARRYL BALDWIN?

On looks alone, Baldwin was the most noticeable player in the game not named Ty Williams. His game on the other hand, went largely unnoticed. He nearly had an interception, but missed a few tackles he should have made. Afterward he was not very excited about his performance, saying he had a lot to learn from before he gets to Ohio State. Hopefully the Buckeyes can toughen him up once he gets to Columbus, because if he ever learns to play to his size and ability, they will end up with a solid football player. If not, they can hope for another Rob Rose at best.
