Solon's Baldwin comes up big in win over Hudson
Tim Rogers, Plain Dealer Reporter, September 26, 2009

At 6-7 and 265 pounds, Solon's Darryl Baldwin is not hard to pick out of a crowd.

"Yeah, he's kind of an obvious target," Solon quarterback Jake Voigt said.

Baldwin and Voigt combined on one of the biggest plays of the game and lifted Solon to a hard-fought 28-14 victory over Hudson in a Northeast Ohio Conference crossover game.

Baldwin, an Ohio State recruit, hauled in a Voigt pass of about 20 yards, broke a couple of tackles and outran the Hudson secondary to complete a 47-yard scoring play that gave the Comets the go-ahead touchdown with 6:28 remaining.

"We knew the middle was going to be open on that play and once I got the ball in my hands I wasn't going to let anyone take me down," Baldwin said

Watched Baldwin against Mayfield this past weekend...still need to see constant effort and would like to see him dominate more often. He has the tools, just needs to use them a little better.

Duane Long mentioned the same concern recently...

Ranking the Buckeye class of 2010

11 - Darryl Baldwin, Ath. Bladwin is a physical protoype for a strong side end but I have quite a bit of information about him from several sources. He does not have the mentality to play defense. He is not a high motor get after it to the whistle on every down kinda kid. I keep hearing the word "disappears" in relation to Baldwin. A friend, a Solon alum, went to a game a few weeks ago. Baldwin played by his estimation 60% of the snaps but had no real impact on the game. Take a quality kid like Baldwin who has a great frame. Move him over to tight end and let him play assignment football.

heh, pretty good stat line he had against a very very good Mayfield team. Not sure how dominant people expect him to be. However, I haven't seen him live so whether or not he takes plays off or gets taken out of plays easily on some I do not know.

Adjusting to adjustments:

It used to be that opposing players would have to adjust to Darryl Baldwin. Now, it's Solon's 6-7 and 265-pound senior two-way end/Ohio State recruit who is learning to adjust to the opposition's adjustments.

"Darryl's getting to know the different blocking schemes and techniques other teams are using to defend him because he's such a force," said Comets coach Jim McQuaide. "He's now used to being double- and triple-teamed and is doing a good job at fending that off."

Solon has found out that just Baldwin's presence on offense is a useful tool.

"Darryl can really move for his size and he's such a good receiver [five catches, 109 yards, one touchdown] that other teams are starting to focus on him," said McQuaide. "When they do that, it opens up opportunities for our other receivers."

Solon escapes a scare from Euclid, 10-7
Tim Warsinskey, Plain Dealer Reporter, November 07, 2009

Solon wasn't expecting this, from itself or from Euclid.

"This was kind of a shock," Comets center Joe Butkovic said after Solon outlasted Euclid, 10-7, in a Division I playoff game Saturday.

"I don't know if we expected them to lay down, but we didn't come out the way we should have. We were able to sneak by. We have to come out next week and play harder."

Next week is a highly anticipated rematch against Mayfield (10-1), a team Solon beat, 27-20, on Oct. 2.

Ohio State recruit Darryl Baldwin, a Solon tight end/defensive end, left the game with a left ankle injury in the second quarter and was on crutches after halftime. His status for this weekend was uncertain.

Baldwin Battles Back | Ohio State Buckeyes College Football Recruiting, OSU Big Ten Football, OSU Basketball – Bucknuts.com

Buckeye commitment Darryl Baldwin sustained an ankle sprain in the first half of his teams' first-round playoff game. Baldwin did not return to action in that game and it wasn't know whether or not the injury would keep him out of Solon's second-round playoff match-up with Mayfield on Saturday night.

Baldwin was able to play on Saturday night and was a key figure in Solon's 13-10 overtime victory.

"Darryl worked as hard as any guy I've been around to come back from an injury," Solon Coach Jim McQuaide said. "He got better every day in practice and was able to play. It was a tremendous effort."

The 6-foot-6 and 250-pound Baldwin had one solo tackle and four assists against Mayfield. He was a part of two tackles for loss.

Solon takes on Cleveland Glenville on Saturday night in the third round of the playoffs.

Solon senior tight end and Ohio State recruit Darryl Baldwin was extremely excited with the way the game turned out, especially since his playing was a game-time decision due to an ankle injury he suffered in last week's game against Euclid.

"This is my senior year and I am going to Ohio State next year, but I still want to make every moment with these guys special. They mean so much to me and this is the most important thing in my life right now. It is feeling very good and I am excited to back next week," Baldwin said.
