OL Connor Smith (official thread)

I think it's more a matter of Connor's August announcement setting off a domino effect, perhaps affecting Aaron Brown's decision and therefore determining how many extra scholarships the staff will have to offer new guys. Maybe right now we don't want to scare off the big guys by appearing to move on to our next options in Palmer et al., maybe Smith's commitment would cause Brown to go elsewhere, or maybe this is just a down period in recruiting (with the coaches on vacation in July) and there's a very specific plan for what will happen in August. I tend to believe the latter, and I could very well see the Bucks getting Smith, Brown and Palmer and call it a year for the OL.

While I agree that Ohio State is EXPECTED to sign Connor, I disagree that all signs are pointing to him coming to Ohio State.

I think it's a little disconcerting that Ryan Palmer seems to be content to wait until August 1st to hear about his offer. Was he told this by a member of the coaching staff?

If he was told that an offer is contingent on what Connor Smith does then that tells me that the staff doesn't know what Connor is thinking. If the staff has no idea what Connor is thinking, then the possibility of him going elsewhere is very real.
I think its more of coincidence that anything. I would have to believe Palmer is next in line to get an offer. Maybe 1 Aug is when they return from vacation or an open period? Does anyone know the contact period from now until 1 Aug? Is is "dead" or only phone contact?

I personally think the staff feels confident that Connor will be a Buckeye but not 100% because as everyone knows, anything can happen. I think it may be more Brown they are worried about. Maybe they plan to have a discussion with Brown after Connor commits about what position he is projected at. I have heard that Brown is concerned with Connor taking the other tackle spot. While I feel Connor can play tackle at the next level, everything I have read points to him projecting as a guard and STUD guard at that.

It should be an interesting upcoming 6-7 weeks as I believe Brown is expected to announce sometime in Sept.

I agree with gobucks it might be coincidence. I would have to think Palmer is next in line for an offer and don't know who else we would offer before him. The only scenario I could see in us not getting Palmer is if they know Brown is coming here and both Smith and Brown are plaing tackle. However I still think he gets an offer regardless.

Word on the street in Cincinnati is that no firm decision had been made as of last Thursday. Tennesee and Florida are real possibilities...Coach Coombs is continuing to push Michigan hard....The fact that an OSU committment might make it tougher on C. Smith during his senior year under Coombs has at least been mentioned by the family. Don't take offense, H&G, but this is a second source that has disclosed this in the past 3 weeks.

I still think Connor Smith is a Buckeye come Aug. 1.

Go Bucks!

If the family is actually concerned that the coach would make it tough on Connor if he committed to Ohio State then it certainly speaks volumes about that coach :grr:
yeah, what kind of coach really cares about what school the kid goes too so long as the kid is happy and goes as far as making the parents concerned that the coach will make things tougher for one of the best players in the country? hopefully someone sets him straight

Gimme a break. It certainly didnt seem to bother Boren when he commited to scUM months ago and he is right next to OSU. I dont buy that BS about the family being concerned. I think its just a smokescreen to build buzz around his commitment next week.If Connor goes anywhere else besides OSU, I bet anyone 500 vCash it isnt scUM. I personnally think he is attending OSU but stranger things have happened.

I agree that it's a bizarre situation to have a high school coach push a player toward the rival of the alma mater of the player's father. Personally, I would stay out of the way if I were that coach, out of respect to the family. I believe that it will NOT be Michigan, and I want no part of your Vcash wager. I'm more concerned about surrounding anti-OSU sentiments opening the door for Tennesee or Florida.

In the end, I think that while Connor's dad has allowed his son to experience recruitment with an open mind, the right decision will be clear to both in the end. Connor, join the Buckeye Family!

Go Bucks!

"The fact that an OSU committment might make it tougher on C. Smith during his senior year under Coombs has at least been mentioned by the family."

Absolutely, 100% NOT true. These rumors about Kerry Coombs pushing Connor to Michigan are false, and have zero influence in the situation. Think it through logically too--why would a coach "punish" one of his starters for deciding to go to a certain college over another? Come on. Also, do you think Connor, or for that matter his parents, would really worry about his senior year of high school football more than the next four years? The thought is pretty silly. Where do you guys get some of this stuff?

Honor&Glory--got your back on this one.

Obviously Coach Tressel does a phenominal job recruiting, but if Connor Smith goes elsewhere it is a HUGE blow and some questions need to be asked as to what went wrong during his recruitment.
Um, no its a huge blow, but sometimes kids just buy what they are sold at other schools. It is a big loss, but its not a reason to say that Tressel isn't doing it right. I'm sure bucknuts will be convinced of that, but sometimes you just lose kids. Similarly, the USC scout board will be in shambles when in 2006 Carroll fails to land top players at every position like last year.

b/c such is the problem with the current recruiting hype machine... clearly this kid should be headed here and if he doesn't do so, its not because JT and the staff didn't work on him hard and well. If people are looking for a welcome place to throw around unwarranted negativity, they should go back to BN.
