OL Coach Tyler Bowen (Official Thread)

If you had just said Fahey was fine, I would agree unreservedly. But when you say “statistically” you bring in everyone else involved in the passing offense. The drops and the poor protection resulted in the worst pass efficiency against USC by any team that doesn’t have “Fresno” in their name. So yeah, I also agree with “the team was not ready to follow his lead”. Everything before and after “statistically” is fine. That word doesn’t belong
I was thinking about interceptions or fumbles mishandling snaps.

No but it's also not like a guy who has been mediocre at best for 3-4 years just flips the switch because of that one extra year, either.

Sometimes they do but it isn't as across the board as fans want to think it is.

Most of the time a mediocre 4th year player comes back and is just a more experienced but still mediocre 5th year guy.

I don't think they even needed to flip a switch. Just not making stupid unforced penalties and missing assignments should be the bare minimum for a veteran group. Even if there isn't a Donovan Jackson or Paris Johnson elite talent, I think they're solid enough talent-wise across the board that their execution should be far above what it's actually been. There are flashes of dominance and then two plays later they look like a MAC group

But making stupid mistakes is part of the output along with physical talent. If they've done it for a while, not doing it anymore is pretty much 180/switch flip.

Doesn't matter that it should be easy to change or should have never been happening in the first place. Its what they do and its what makes them so underwhelming overall.

Expecting that to change all of a sudden is what I think people overestimate.

Think of any poor decision maker you know in personal life. Saying "stop doing stupid shit" doesn't ever seem to change anything even though it' just a mental thing. You'd think they'd want to stop doing stupid shit. Turns out it just isn't that easy to change human behaviors.

One thing that’s been on my mind all season…

My memory is not what it once was, but to the best of my recollection the last time we had high expectations for an OL group based on years of starting experience and precious little else was in 1987.

The Sporting News preseason magazine had the Buckeyes at #2. While this was the highest ranking of the preseason mags, most of them had the Buckeyes in the top ten. All of them cited the experience of the OL as a big reason. The preseason AP poll had the Buckeyes at #4.

6-4-1
Earle Bruce fired

And it had a lot more to do with the OL being who they had been for years than with Cris Carter taking money from an agent before it was legal.

What does that mean, though? If it's not the coaching or the talent, what is it?

I'm not smart enough about designing an offense to know whether or not it's true, but it feels to me like the total offensive philosophy/scheme consistently puts the o-line in a position where every play's success is dependent on each OL having a total win in their assignment. So all it takes is one player being a half-step slow on their block for an entire play to get blown up. It's the only thing I can figure with how consistently the exact same problems show up regardless of coaching changes and new players coming in.

And then the players transfer elsewhere and have success or head off to the NFL and do well so it's not like there isn't talent here.

It's like there is some sort of anti-synergy where the unit always manages to perform worse than the sum of the individual parts.
