OL Coach/Run Game Coordinator Justin Frye (Official Thread)

I’m going to take the time give Frye his flowers for the performance of his guys against UT. Hopefully they can sustain this success.
Good call. That was an excellent performance from a makeshift OL. Gotta say he gets the most from what he has on the field most games, the only rub is recruiting. But fuck talking about that now and give the guy credit for that performance by the OL.

Who plays 2-deep on OL?
Pretty much no one.
Which teams have played 17 game seasons ? Pretty much no one. Who recruits as well as Ohio State Year over year? Pretty much no one. We should rotate in our 2-deep OL in this era of 16 or 17 game seasons. Not saying equal playing time…..but we should have back-ups with significant playing to be able to plug and play.

The good news is that Frye has indeed developed some more guys than it appeared earlier in the season.

At OL? Plenty

And if my aunt had balls....

It's a nice world to live in, but it's not reality (yet). Expanded roster space will be a cure for some of this. Putting guys on the field who aren't ready yet and haven't demonstrated readiness yet in practice will only lead to more injuries.

Fyre lost a 1st or 2nd round LT and the Remington award winner at C. Both done for the season. At the time the OL was in consideration for the prestigious Moore award for the best OL in CFB.
From a make shift line they just dominated a top 5 defense. Dominated. Like, "we beat dey ass" dominated.
Yeah, recruiting issues aside, have to give Frye props for the job he's done this season after losing two AAs and having to send a line out there held together by chewing gum and duct tape.

For my “other than that, how’d you enjoy the play Mrs. Lincoln?” PSA….he doesn’t have to rely on chewing gum and duct tape if he does the other half of his job.

Thought the run blocking was good, not great. But everyone says Tennessee had a stout DLine so consider the competition they get a positive grade. Better than the Game before.

Running game really picked up after the passing game and the Vols started to tap out - which should be the gameplan for this offense all along. Shows how much scheme and gameplan make a difference.

They get an A- for pass blocking. I think Will was only pressured 3-4 times. Overall good performance. Do it again next week.

The difference was scheme. Chip called a masterful game, and put the kids in the best position to succeed.

Rotating o line is just something that isn’t done historically. I think that might have to change. Find 4-5 in the middle and rotate them. Find 3 tackles and rotate them. We look good in the middle for next year with 5 decent slobs for 3 spots if they all stick around. Now just need the tackles.

Don't shoot the messenger...

But with OSU starting to hit their OL recruiting strategy(combo of HS and Portal) at almost near perfect right now. Combine that with how the OL has still looked quite good despite multiple backups forced into starting roles. Don't be surprised if Frye is retained for at least 1 more year. I know that will send mixed responses now that we're almost a month away from The Game debacle, and 4 days from the CFP 1st round win.

If it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen. But I wouldn't be surprised if the task at hand was to find some of the best OL in the Portal, on top continuing the strategy to keep the OL dominant. So far he's hitting a homerun, by landing 2 of the best Portal OL, and demolishing the UT DL.

We will either have the shine from a certain trophy keeping the light off of him or there's another debacle yet to be seen where the OL is, likely, a major culprit. Right now people are only feeling the post UT vibes. If there are any Missouri/The Game type disasters prognostication like this will change rapidly.

That said, if Kelly/Day keep game planning like we just saw, then I don't really care about the OL coach.

Believe that Chip, Ryan and Frye all went into an office, and diagrammed out who could play and where. When Ryan and Chip were satisfied, they left the office with their OL lineup. It does show that some of the 2's/3's are serviceable, as indicated by their play. Thought Tegra was going to the pine, but didn't happen. Just wonder how much is ego (on part of coaches), that they selected a guy to start, and he bombed, but kept him in anyway. Dunno. Idle thought. Did notice that after Caleb dropped a punt, Inness came back in immediately. (or was it Ballard?)....
