OL Coach/Run Game Coordinator Justin Frye (Official Thread)

Stud was quietly a solid recruiter, until the last season he was there.

Think of all the big names he was able to get over his tenure.

Health issues became a thing for him and being able to both recruit and coach.

Before the health issues, he was a great recruiter and coach.
Everything coming out of the WHAC was that Stud’s recruits were closed by others like Urban. I recall quite a bit of discussion on here around Stud’s lack of desire to recruit.

Same here. He already wasn’t exactly killing it on the recruiting trail. His health issues just exacerbated his deficiencies as a recruiter. When just about every guy on the OSU beat agrees that he got canned mostly bcuz of consistent short comings on the recruiting trail…I mean he walked like a duck, talked like a duck, so…

That's nice... but a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while. All the credit in the world for Simmons but it took a season, and Seth was on the watch list last year .... it begs the question was he working so much with say Simmons he neglected other OTs etc....

Frye gets his butt kicked on this site all the time.
Simmons wasn't wanted anymore at SD State as a RT; recruited as a guard
Alabama was ecstatic McLaughlin left and ridiculed us for taking him
So, in all fairness, Frye deserves the attaboy here

Because our chances of winning the NC sure would improve if those two hombres were saddling up right now
and we would have had a run game vs scUM

But we don't and we didn't vs SCUM. And yet Ryan obviously didn't get that memo ....

Do you think he realizes that now ? We'll see ....

Or Chip! Recollect when he came aboard (Chip recommended Frye to Day when Chip was at UCLA), he looked at tOSU's OL and said it looked pretty good. That alone probably bought Frye another year of income. See the above showing both sides of the coin. Not entirely certain how the #2s and #3s show their stuff, when the mid-week practices (in season), don't feature hard hitting, blitzing etc (as don't want the players to get injured). AND, there's how many? assistant coaches working on technique with these guys? Also seems like Frye is becoming a lightning rod for Day, and tOSU's performance. This off-season might be interesting.

It just keeps pointing back to Day’s (and his staff’s) refusal to rotate players generously. They seem to always be behind the 8-ball every season with inexperience. Ohio State should be playing a 2-deep all game In this era of the CFP.

To me, the most damning aspect to Frye’s situation is that it’s currently believed they will go after 3 starters in the portal for next year. That’s just too many for a place like OSU and points to their lack of recruiting and development.
I mean I’d agree with the approach if it were on purpose but I don’t think it is lol.

If you think about it this is the way to do business on the OL. Go get 2-4 Midwest kids who you think can play but maybe aren’t 5 stars. Then get 3 kids in the portal who you know are starter grade.

The problem is we seem to only get 1 starter grade kid in the portal and then still only recruit 3 HS kids. To make it worse the HS kids are normally 1 kid who’s got star potential and then 2 projects.

We need numbers and options. We had better land 2-3 starters in the portal or dang next year could be a rough go with also replacing the QB and most of the defense

Goal should be to recruit and develop HS talent to fill your starting lineup, with the knowledge that you’ll inevitably need portal talent to cover occasional gaps (including people going to the NFL early).
I can see one per year for the OL being common, but not three.
I guess we’ll see how many we actually go for this year.
