We should treat it that way after last season, though they started playing better if you throw out the bowl game where the coaches experimented pretty much across the board and it looked awful. Simmons is supposedly having a great offseason and has all the tools to be a great LT if he eliminates mental errors and is more comfortable with the playbook. Jackson is an elite LG if he doesn't have to babysit the LT and C like last year, which he shouldn't have to do. McLaughlin obviously comes with the concerns of getting his snaps down, but if he does he is a physical center with tons of experience at the highest level. RG I hope is Fryar, he has the ability to be special but he just isn't an OT. At RT, I am hoping Montgomery is ready to step in, all the talent in the world and coming around physically. The O Line room is about to change IMO. I hope Kelly can find the mix he wants. But all the cards are being reshuffled and maybe there is a spring OL transfer?
But either way, the whole O Line position group is wide open right now IMO.
Love the Spicoli reference and agreed totally. What, was he going to walk without a raise when he can't recruit and his unit does not perform at least at average when it matters? We can give him one more year to earn his spot, but not with a raise for mediocrity and mediocrity would be a compliment.
@ScriptOhio posted this in the offense thread, but Frye needs some praise in his own thread as well.Ohio State (8-1)
53.2% of rush yds come before contact (3rd highest in FBS).
2.91 yards before contact per attempt (4th in FBS).
Allowing pressure on just 22.0% of dropbacks this season (4th best pressure rate in FBS).
Only 19% of runs saw contact at or behind the line of scrimmage (12th lowest in FBS).
Ohio State ranks No. 9 nationally with just 32.0 tackles for loss allowed in nine games and is eighth nationally in fewest TFLs allowed per game (3.56).
Ohio State’s line has allowed just 1.22 sacks per game; in six of nine games this season, the line has allowed either one or zero sacks.
All those stats have been put up while the line has been reshaped: following a season-ending injury to LT Josh Simmons, the Buckeyes replaced him with Zen Michalski. When Michalski went down with an injury vs. Nebraska, the unit was reworked to move LG Donovan Jackson to LT and inserted Carson Hinzman, a 12-game starter at center in 2023, to LG.
In that group's first game together at No. 3 Penn State, they helped Ohio State rush for 176 yards – including 58 on a game-ending 11-play drive in the 4th quarter while not allowing a sack the entire game.
Offensive line coach: Justin Frye
Bama has long been the pinnacle of OL recruiting with their endless supply of 5stars, yet their best run blocker was a RB and a 3star OL from NJ was the best pass blocker.TOP BLOCKERS
Pass blocking
Geno VanDeMark — 78.3 (7-pass-blocking-snaps)
Tyler Booker — 74.9 (20-pass-blocking-snaps)
Kadyn Proctor — 62.4 (21-pass-blocking-snaps)
Outlook: Alabama's past blocking was nothing special in the win over the Tigers, with only two players grading above 70 and three grading above 60. The group allowed five pressures total, with Kadyn Proctor and Elijah Pritchett allowing two each. Alabama’s skill players looked solid on their pass-blocking reps, although at a lower volume than usual.
Run blocking
Jam Miller — 82.4 (12-run-blocking-snaps)
Miles McVay — 74.1 (10-run-blocking-snaps)
Tyler Booker — 67.8 (37-run-blocking-snaps)
Parker Brailsford — 66.3 (36-run-blocking-snaps)
Outlook: Alabama's running backs played a significant role in The Run blocking, contributing to several massive runs for quarterback Jalen Milroe. Both Jam Miller and Justice Haynes were Alabama's top two run blockers, playing a combined 17 snaps, Miller playing 12. Alabama's run game was dominant against the Tigers overall, with 312 rushing yards on 46 attempts, which is a big reason Alabama could control the time of possession in this game.
Absolutely, I'm the first to criticize but also the the first to give credit where it is due. With the injuries and hand that was dealt to Frye, he has done exceptionally well so far on the OL adjustments. On recruiting, maybe we need to have a tagalong like Hartline or JL. But enough ado there, really solid performances in a tough situation with injuries.Gotta give props to Frye for having his OL ready to play this week.
