"I'm pretty sure they get some sort of an edge, but I never really thought about doing that. I figured you're only in high school once," Farris said. "I only have five classes a day, so I go to school at 8:35, get out of school at 1:30, take a nap when I get home and go lift weights."

ON DE CHASE FARRIS?

Farris definitely passes the look test, but he wasn?t much of a factor in Friday?s game despite the fact the South team was often running the ball in his direction. He had a chance to make a big play in the backfield early on, but whiffed on Jayshon Jackson. He picked up an offsetting personal foul penalty and seemed to be around the ball most of the day, but didn?t come away with many tackles.

Analysis: Right now, Farris relies too much on instincts. ?See ball, get ball? is what he told me this week and that seems to be exactly how he plays. He doesn't have a lot of technique yet or ability to read plays, but he's big and strong and gives good effort. He tends to get up field a little too quickly before he realizes where the play is headed, but he showed some toughness and some nastiness in the game, which is what you want to see from a defensive lineman.

Farris joins future teammates in North-South game (with video)

COLUMBUS - To Chase Farris it was a sign of things to come.

Just hopefully with better results.

For most of Friday's North-South Classic football game at Ohio Stadium, Farris lined up at one defensive end position with Canton McKinley product Steve Miller at the other.

In a few short months, both Farris (Elyria) and Miller will be playing those same positions for Ohio State.

Farris and his North teammates came up on the short end of a 25-7 score against South on Friday. But the experience stoked Farris' fire heading into August's camp with the Buckeyes.

"I'm really looking forward to it," Farris said of his arrival to campus as a member of the Buckeyes. "I want to get on that (lifting) program and see how my body reacts to it."

As for playing defensive end across from Miller down the road for OSU, Farris said, "Hopefully we do."

Despite the star-studded defense that included three Ohio State recruits (including defensive back Doran Grant from Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary), North struggled to stop South's offense.

South outgained North, 298-260, including a whopping 230 yards rushing.

"As far as preparation goes, we couldn't really do much," Farris said. "We had to stay in certain (defensive) sets.

"Basically, I speed-rushed and just tried to take what I could get."

OSU Football: Elyria?s Chase Farris still committed to Buckeyes
Filed by Chronicle-Telegram Sports June 2nd, 2011 in Sports.

Jim Tressel may be out at Ohio State, but Chase Farris is still in.

Despite the resignation of Tressel as OSU football coach, Farris, a standout at Elyria High, plans on attending the university on a full scholarship this fall.

?I?m still a Buckeye,? said Farris, who was Division I first-team
All-Ohio as a defensive lineman in his senior season with the Pioneers. ?This doesn?t change anything for me. Coach (Tressel) must have thought this was the best thing for the school.?

Farris will be playing for interim coach Luke Fickell, Ohio State?s co-defensive coordinator under Tressel.

?I haven?t talked to Coach Fickell yet about (Tressel?s resignation), but I?ve talked to him every time I was down there,? Farris said. ?He was going to be my position coach, so I know him and like him.?

Farris will play in the Big 33 high school all-star game June 18 in Pennsylvania, reporting to Ohio State on June 19 before beginning classes the following day.

Elyria defensive lineman Chase Farris and his mother will make the six-hour drive from Hershey, Pa., back home late Saturday night. Then Farris will grab his things and head to Columbus to start his career as an Ohio State Buckeye.

Incoming freshman football players need to report to Columbus by Sunday, and OSU head coach Luke Fickell should be eagerly awaiting their arrivals. With Jim Tressel out and the NCAA still waiting to rule on the Buckeyes, Ohio State can't take anything for granted, even the players who more than four months ago signed national letters of intent with Ohio State.

A reporting date that served as a mere formality in past years will instead be another big step for Fickell as he steers the program though uncertain times.

"No matter what happens down there, you're always treated like family," Farris said. "It's time to get to Buckeye Nation and do what I've got to do."

Farris said he is asked about Ohio State's situation constantly, but he has never reconsidered his decision.

Farris, in a phone interview Thursday afternoon, said he hasn't spoken with Price since arriving in Pennsylvania on Monday, but he has been spending more time with his other future teammates.

"All of us don't live close to each other," Farris said, "so when we get to come together, it's really fun."

Standing out

Defensive lineman Chase Farris intercepted a pass during a key third-down situation in which the offense and defense were battling to win the practice. The offense held on to win. Meyer mentioned Farris, but only by first name. He asked for help with the last name. Farris is a 6-foot-4, 286-pound redshirt freshman from Elyria. Meyer said Hall has proven he is a playmaker and Hyde had an excellent practice.

No. 57 Chase Farris, redshirt sophomore right tackle: Farris is locked in what may be the most interesting position battle on the team, fighting sophomore Taylor Decker and surprise candidate Pat Elflein, a redshirt freshman, for the fifth starting job on the offense line.

Four seniors man the other four spots, but at the moment, Meyer called the open right tackle job ?real bothersome.? No one has seized the job. At 6-foot-7, Decker is more of a prototypical tackle, but the 6-4, 300-pound Farris is the better natural athlete.

Both need to play with more confidence and nastiness. But Farris is still making some adjustments after starting his career at Ohio State as a defensive lineman.

?He's coming around,? Meyer said. ?But the offensive line is the one position of all the positions on the team that take the most time to saturate a guy. He's got all the skills, he's a wonderful young man, he's just a little bit behind where we thought he would be.?

Meyer said the spring is for setting the depth chart, and practice in August is for getting ready to win, so that right tackle job could be won by somebody on Saturday.
