OL Branden Bowen (2nd Team All B1G)

Live Updates: Urban Meyer Radio Show Updates – 11.29.18

+ Wyatt Davis will start in place of Demetrius Knox. He’s 5-7 pounds lighter and more athletic, but he lacks experience and endurance. Branden Bowen has also been moved to right guard. Josh Myers is at center. Bowen would probably be the first lineman in if need be.

Fully expect him to see some playing time against NW.

For the first half of Ohio State’s 2017 regular season, Branden Bowen looked poised to be a starter on the Buckeyes’ offensive line for the next three years.

Bowen started the Buckeyes’ first six games of 2017 at right guard, and performed well. Even though he began the year practicing as an offensive tackle, and wasn’t widely projected to win a right guard competition that also included Matthew Burrell, Demetrius Knox and Malcolm Pridgeon, Bowen showed what he could do as both a run blocker and pass protector on Ohio State’s offensive line, and his future looked bright.

It only took one play, however, for Bowen’s career trajectory to change in a big way.

During the first quarter of Ohio State’s game against Maryland on Oct. 7, 2017, a Maryland defender was blocked into Bowen’s left leg, fracturing his tibia and fibula.

Bowen hasn’t played in a game since.

After undergoing two surgeries on his leg following the injury and missing the remainder of the 2017 season and last year’s spring practices Bowen was still expected to have a shot to compete his way back into the starting lineup this past season. As he participated in the beginning of fall camp, however, Bowen realized his leg still didn’t feel quite right, and he ended up having to undergo a third surgery after finding out that his fibula had not fully healed.

That was a tough pill for Bowen to swallow.

“It was really frustrating,” Bowen said. “I was looking forward to another good year, and I guess not being able to do that, it was disappointing. It was definitely hard to deal with.”

As Bowen has battled through the unexpectedly long process of recovering from his injury, he’s acknowledged that the recovery has challenged him just as much mentally as it has physically.

In recognition of World Mental Health Day in October, Bowen posted a personal message to his Twitter account in which he revealed that he has battled with depression and anxiety in the past............

Morning Conversational: How Close Is Branden Bowen To Being the Player He Was?

Branden-Bowen-Justin-Fields-Spring-Game-1170x780.jpg

When Branden Bowen won the right guard job as a redshirt sophomore in fall camp prior to the 2017 season, it looked like that position was going to be in good hands for the next three years.

Midway through the season, however, Bowen suffered a broken left leg and missed the rest of the season. Complications from that injury arose during camp in 2018 and he had to have another surgery.

Bowen could have played at the end of the season, but it wasn’t needed.

This spring, Bowen was with the ones throughout camp. At the beginning of camp, he was at right tackle. Later on, he moved to left guard, and also spent some time at left tackle.

He certainly didn’t look like he had missed the last 20 games or so.

“I feel great,” he said this spring. “I feel like the best shape of my life. I’m the strongest I’ve ever been, the fastest I’ve ever been and I’m ready to have a great year.”

Getting back into shape and having the leg be as strong as it needs to be is just one aspect of Bowen’s return. He also has to get over the mental hurdle of trusting that his leg will hold up to the strain.

Everything went great this spring, but offensive line coach Greg Studrawa doesn’t want people to see Bowen’s performance and think it’s been an easy road for the fifth-year senior.

“I think it was extremely hard,” Studrawa said this spring. “I think what people don’t realize is when a kid gets injured like that, the mental aspect is way more than the physical. The physical, we have the best people in the world getting these kids back. But what you can’t ever judge is how he feels.

“When they’re hurt and when they come back, the biggest thing then is getting back into live action and not being worried about hurting again. And that’s all right here. And right now we’re still fighting through those things to get Branden absolutely confident and being back in live action.”

Is he eligible for a medical redshirt next season if he isn't NFL ready?

I'll say he is a good candidate to apply for one:

Medical Hardship Requirements
To be eligible for a medical hardship waiver, a student-athlete has to meet the following criteria:
  • The student-athlete must suffer the injury during one of their four seasons of college competition or during the senior year of high school.
  • The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season-ending injury.
  • The injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season.
  • The student-athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater.
All of these must be proven with documentation. That means medical documentation to prove the injury and that it was season-ending and participation information to show that the student-athlete did not play in too many contests.

He got hurt in the sixth game (Maryland) of the 2017 season, a season in which Ohio State played 14 games. This means he competed in 43% of the games for that season, which is well above the 30% medical redshirt threshold.

It would be for the 2018 and/or (maybe the) 2019 season where he played 0% of the games due to the injury....

Branden Bowen has third surgery on injured leg: Ohio State football news
Sep 6, 2018
Ohio State junior offensive lineman Branden Bowen on Thursday underwent surgery on the leg he injured last year against Maryland, according to a post on Bowen's Instagram account.

An Ohio State spokesperson confirmed to cleveland.com that Bowen had surgery, but could not offer a timetable for return.

Bowen said in his social media post that this is the third surgery he's had on his left leg since breaking it on Oct. 7 of last season. Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer called it "a clean break" then.

Branden Bowen on feeling healthy, becoming a father
ByDAVE BIDDLE 5 hours ago

Ohio State offensive lineman Branden Bowen has not played in a real football game since suffering a broken leg in October of 2017 against Maryland.

Bowen was the Buckeyes' starting right guard in '17 and was playing well before suffering the injury, which ended up requiring three surgeries.

Finally toward the end of the 2018 season, Bowen started feeling like himself again. And during spring of 2019, he really felt he turned a corner.

Entering his fifth-year senior season, the 6-foot-7, 315-pound Bowen is projected by many to be Ohio State's starting right tackle. But he played left tackle during spring (due to junior Thayer Munfordsitting out spring with an injury) and can of course also play guard.

"I feel great," Bowen told Bucknuts in April. "I feel like I'm in the best shape of my life. I'm the strongest I've ever been. I'm the fastest I've ever been. So, I feel great."

The fact that Bowen has a half-season of starting experience gives him confidence entering 2019.

"Yes, because I know what it takes," he said. "That's something similar to Wyatt Davis and Josh Alabi. They both know what it takes to play and be a starter at that level and what it takes to win (because Davis started the final two games of the 2018 season in place of an injured Demetrius Knox, and Alabi started the final game in place of Munford). So, it's made things a lot easier."

Bowen also became a father in March when his fiancee', Kate, gave birth to their son, Booker.

"It gives me a lot more motivation," Bowen said. "And a whole different aspect of love. It's life-changing. I don't even know how to describe it."

However, later, Bowen continued to describe it.

"It makes everything more important," he said. "The coaches always preach about doing the little things, but now you really see that because every little thing matters. This is the future of your child. We play football for the love of the game and to get to the next level and to have those opportunities. And so, being a father just makes everything more important."

BRANDEN BOWEN WILL START AT RIGHT TACKLE FOR OHIO STATE ON SATURDAY

He's back, and he's starting.

Two years and three surgeries after his six-game stint as Ohio State's starting right guard ended prematurely due to a broken leg in 2017, Branden Bowen will start at right tackle for Ohio State on Saturday, head coach Ryan Day announced Tuesday.

Bowen beat out redshirt freshman Nicholas Petit-Frere to win the starting spot, though Petit-Frere is also expected to play on Saturday, Day said.

The fifth-year senior joins left tackle Thayer Munford, left guard Jonah Jackson, center Josh Myers and right guard Wyatt Davis on the offensive line. Munford is the only returning starter on the line, though Jackson started the entire 2018 season at Rutgers and Davis started the Buckeyes' final two games last season.

Since suffering his injury on Oct. 7, 2017, Bowen has not played a single snap in a game. Due to complications in his recovery, Bowen was not healthy enough to return to action until late last season, and the Buckeyes opted not to play him at all last year.

“Coming into camp, the week leading up to it when we had some time off, I was sitting at home thinking, 'This is it. I've got to go now. I don't have a choice. I've got to play or look past football,’” Bowen said earlier this month. “I had to make that choice to come in and compete for a starting job and just keep pushing for it.”

Bowen gives the Buckeyes two senior starters on the offensive line, along with Jackson.

The Buckeyes open the season at home on Saturday at noon against Florida Atlantic.

Branden is an excellent example of utilizing that determination to get back to where he was pre-injury. Love this dude’s spirit.

Now go out there and get 8 pancake blocks on Saturday.

One of my favorite Buckeyes on the team for that reason. Hoping he has a huge senior year and gets drafted. Men of his size and athleticism are rare, he just has to stay healthy.
