Price is right for Ohio State

Fitch?s junior defensive tackle verbally committed to the Buckeyes on Monday.

On Saturday, roughly 111/2 months before high school juniors will be able to sign national letters-of-intent, Fitch junior Billy Price took a campus visit to Ohio State, saw everything he needed to see and said, ?This is it.?

?In my heart, I made my decision,? said Price, an All-Ohio lineman who will play defensive tackle in Columbus. ?I?m very confident in that decision.?

On Monday, he made it official, becoming one of the first players from the 2013 class to verbally commit to new coach Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes.

?I was tired of playing the recruiting game,? he said. ?They were the front-runner since my sophomore year when I went to the Ohio State-Michigan game. I was amazed at the atmosphere and the fan base and I fell in love with Ohio State University.

?The coaching change [from Jim Tressel to Meyer] wasn?t too much of a factor for me. Urban Meyer knows what he?s doing.?

While Price?s size (6-foot-4, 305 pounds) and natural ability was enough to entice college recruiters, Fitch coach Phil Annarella said Price?s work ethic, intelligence (his grade point average is above a 3.5) and strong family background separate him from even the best athletes.

?Most guys at that level show the god-given size and god-given ability early, but the best ones are the ones that develop it and are coachable and work at achieving their maximum potential and Billy is one of those,? said Annarella.

Ohio State football: Lineman Price joins recruiting class of 2013
By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch
Tuesday February 14, 2012

Billy Price said he doesn?t pay much attention to rankings by the various recruiting services, but he was aware of them enough to know that when he committed to Ohio State?s 2013 class yesterday it would be seen as a major moment.

?The ratings mean nothing to me particularly,? said the two-way lineman from Austintown, Ohio. ?But I do know that having the top three players from the state of Ohio committed and staying in state to play for the Ohio State University ? I believe the 2013 class is going to be rolling.?

Price, of Austintown Fitch, is rated No. 3 in the state by recruiting analyst Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts, who has cornerback Cam Burrows of Trotwood-Madison No. 1 and quarterback/athlete Jalin Marshall of Middletown No. 2. Burrows was the first to commit to Ohio State for 2013, in January, and Marshall followed on Jan. 30.

Then came Price yesterday, ?and it?s still February 2012,? Kurelic said. ?This is a huge start for (coach) Urban Meyer and his staff, and maybe shows you what?s about to come.?

At 6 feet 4 and 280 pounds, Price is projected as a defensive lineman in college, though Kurelic pointed out he has the ability and the tenacity to play on offense or defense.

Rivals.com has Burrows and Marshall rated Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in the state, also, while it has Price at No. 7. Price had received at least 10 scholarship offers, including from Nebraska and Notre Dame.

?I was just really comfortable with Ohio State,? Price said. ?The academics are really strong, and my family is very comfortable with coach Meyer and his staff. I got all the questions I had about Ohio State answered, and it was finally time.?

He thinks he, Burrows and Marshall are part of another run of Ohio State recruiting success that will play out over the next few months.

?Hopefully, we?re going to pick up a lot more Ohio guys, since Ohio is the priority,? Price said. ?I?m talking about guys like Taco Charlton (defensive end from Pickerington Central), Jake Butt (tight end from Pickerington North), Courtney Love (linebacker from Youngstown Mooney) and Mitch Trubisky (quarterback from Mentor) ? all these guys could have an impact for the 2013 class.

?With us already having the top three guys, I think people are going to jump on board.?

In the first article they list him as 6-foot-4, 305 pounds while the second has him at 6 feet 4 and 280 pounds. I am thinking that the 305lbs is more around the true weight as he is quoted saying to a coach that he didn't want to be 350 lbs. So, I think we have a great recruit to help fill in the middle of our DL next to Schutt in the years to come. :)

Scout (Free) - Midwest Recruiting Notebook

Billy Price: DT - Austintown Fitch (Ohio): The Ohio State commit makes some athletic interior moves and shows good agility for a kid that's naturally stocky and wide bodied. He gets off the ball well and plays with outstanding motor. He plays farther outside now than we think he will in college. We see him as a nose type. Right now, he's already a four-star guy and he'll stay there and likely be a top 10 guy in Ohio.

Field co-MVP leads Falcons to team title
By Joe Scalzo

POLAND

With a 5:30 p.m. date ahead of him (?A nice young lady friend of mine,? he said), a 6 a.m. wake-up call behind him and a 33-degree rain around him, Fitch junior Billy Price could be forgiven for being less than ecstatic about Saturday?s discus preliminaries.

Just not by his coach.

?My coach [T.J. Koniowsky] kind of set my head straight with putting track first,? Price said.

So, in the finals, Price kept his head ? and his throws ? relatively straight, uncorking a personal-best throw of 191 feet, 7 inches to win the event and finish in a three-way tie for field MVP honors at the Poland Invitational, leading the Falcons to a 31-point team victory over Cleveland Heights.

?When I let it go, I didn?t let my hip clear all the way, so when it went to the right, I was just praying to God that the wind would just keep it going right and land barely in sector,? said Price, an Ohio State football recruit. ?When it did, it was just an awesome feeling.

?I was like, ?Yes! Finally!??

Before the discus landed, Koniowsky started shouting ?Get in! Get in!? When it landed just inside the boundary, Price let out a ?Woo!? then crouched down and pumped his fingers.

When asked about the crouch, Koniowsky shrugged and said, ?Last year he did the boxing thing, where he shadowboxed.?

Price?s explanation?

?Adrenaline,? he said.

Afterward, Price changed into a shirt that read ?Yeah buddy,? prompting Koniowsky to vow that he?ll get a sleeveless ?Yeah, buddy? for the state meet.

?It?s gonna be the gun show, baby,? Price said.

?It will be,? Koniowsky said.

Scout $ - NFTC Breakdown: Billy Price

5/7

By Berk...looks great from a physical standpoint...a little one dimensional from a defensive standpoint and may need to get a look at guard or center if he can't develop into a more versatile defender.

Frankly I think with the right coaching he can still be a force on defense. Many of the flaws in his game are things that can be coached (i.e. how to use his hands, leverage, advanced inside moves, etc.). The things that can't be coached, he seems to have in spades. Maybe grad or someone else can weigh in here but that's how I see it.
