OL Alex Boone (Official Thread)

Rob Oller commentary: About-face for Boone

boone620.jpg

Marcio Jose Sanchez | Associated Press
Alex Boone, a former Ohio State player, is the starting right guard for the San Francisco 49ers.

Everything is good now. Alex Boone is happily married and has a young son. His team is in the Super Bowl, and the starting right guard for the San Francisco 49ers even has a Bay Area zoo rhinoceros named for him.

And, finally, the drinking problem is under control. As long as the former Ohio State lineman stays away from weddings. No weddings.

?He struggles at weddings. He doesn?t go to bars or weddings,? said Amy Boone, whose giant of a son is the subject of an inspirational story that doubles as a cautionary tale.

Everything is good now. But before? Horrible. The low point occurred on Feb. 1, 2009, when Amy Boone found herself on the floor without knowing how she got there, which tends to happen when a mother gets a late-night phone call from the police about her son.

?It?s 3 o?clock in the morning and the phone rings and a guy says, ?Amy Boone? This is the Orange County Sheriff?s Department.? The next thing I?m sitting on the floor and crying, ?Oh, my God, he?s dead.? And the officer says, ?No ma?am, he?s fine, but we?re having a little trouble keeping him under control.? ?

Browns fan Alex Boone matures with 49ers

NEW ORLEANS ?

There?s enough Alex Boone could reflect on and smile about while walking the streets of ?The Big Easy.?

He was a nationally-acclaimed line prospect when he played at Lakewood St. Edward High School. He was a four-year starter on Ohio State teams that were 4-0 against Michigan and reached two national title games.

But he is not here for the street life. And there is something in the way he says, ?I don?t like to look back.?

There are people who do that for him.

His past raises questions about whether it is safe, even now, to say he bottomed out in 2009. It was four years ago, almost to the day.

One of Boone?s former Buckeye teammates, Santonio Holmes, had just caught a touchdown pass that gave Pittsburgh a win over Arizona in Super Bowl XLIII.

In the wee hours that night, Boone was arrested for getting too wild while drunk in Aliso Viejo, Calif. Police said he jumped on cars, pounded on doors and acted badly after being taken to jail.

Boone had finished his Ohio State career a month earlier with a loss to Colt McCoy?s Texas team in the Fiesta Bowl. He had been a problem Buckeye before. In 2006, he was demoted to second team for spring practice after a DUI arrest.

His apparent contrition in 2006 enabled him to get his starting job back by autumn. NFL scouts drew their own conclusions after the 2009 arrest.

Once viewed as a first-round talent, he wasn?t even drafted. The 49ers signed him, partly because tough-guy head coach Mike Singletary believed he could straighten out Boone.

Singletary didn?t last. Boone did.

At age 25, in his fourth year with the team, Boone won the starting right guard job.

?It was a camp battle,? he said Thursday in a room in the downtown Marriott Hotel.

Former Ohio State football player Alex Boone picks Indiana, not Buckeyes, to win NCAA Tournament 2013: Celebrity Bracketology Challenge

Alex Boone's bracket for The Plain Dealer's Celebrity Bracketology Challenge.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Alex Boone has a good relationship with his coach with the San Francisco 49ers, Jim Harbaugh, even though Boone, a St. Edward grad, played at Ohio State and Harbaugh is a Michigan Wolverine.

So Boone, after starting at right guard for the 49ers in the Super Bowl, just happened to pick the Indiana Hoosiers to win the national title as part of The Plain Dealer's seventh annual Celebrity Bracketology Challenge.

"I think coach Tom Crean is a great coach, and it has nothing do, I promise, with the fact that he's the brother-in-law of my coach out in Frisco," Boone said, ahem, convincingly. "But I think they have a good team."

Boone has the Buckeyes making the Elite Eight before losing to No. 1 seed Gonzaga. See his handwritten bracket above. Meet the other bracketologists at cleveland.com/marchmadness.

"I think they have a great team and I love Thad Matta. I'm a huge fan, even though I never got to meet him. But a good friend of mine thinks extremely highly of him," Boone said, "and I have the utmost respect for him. But I just feel Indiana is going to take it this year."

Alex Boone Bulks Up for 2013
Taylor Price 49ers.com @TaylorPrice49 Goal Posts Blog

Maybe it?s the new haircut. Or, maybe it?s the appearance of a larger upper body.

Whatever the case is, Alex Boone looks bigger this offseason. The San Francisco 49ers starting right guard estimates he?s put on 10-15 pounds of muscle.

Boone said it?s a result of hard training and healthy eating during his time back home in Ohio.

?I feel like an old vet,? the fourth-year pro said on Tuesday, the second day of San Francisco?s offseason strength program. ?I?m getting older, wiser? I?m becoming the old guy around here.?

Boone, 25, enters the 2013 season with an established role on the 49ers offensive line. In previous seasons, the undrafted lineman had to battle for a roster spot and once he made the team, he eventually competed as a swing tackle on the offensive line.

Last year, however, Boone won the competition for the vacant guard spot on the right side of the offensive line and thrived in his first season at the position.

Boone started in all 16 regular season games and in all three of the team?s postseason contests.

Entering 2013, Boone continues to showcase the hard-working mindset that allowed him to become a successful contributor to San Francisco?s fourth-ranked rushing attack.

It also doesn?t hurt that the 6-foot-8 lineman has continued to align himself with a former two-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman, LeCharles Bentley. The retired former offensive lineman for the New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns has served as Boone?s mentor throughout his professional career.

While away from the 49ers training facility, Boone continued his offseason training at Bentley?s Offensive Line Academy in Avon, Ohio.

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco 49ers lineman Alex Boone will join San Francisco Zoo patrons on Friday to celebrate the naming of a 4-year-old black rhino after him.

Boone became heavily involved in the zoo in the fall of 2012 and has since created the Alex Boone Animal Education Project to bring local at-risk youth to the zoo, officials at the zoo said.

To honor him for his efforts, the rhino has been named "Boone."

"There are very few black rhinos left on this planet, so to have one named after me is truly an honor," Boone said in a statement.

There will be a VIP event beginning at 2 p.m. at the Nature Exploration Meadow, followed by a public event in which the 49ers offensive lineman will feed the rhino and unveil a plaque, zoo officials said.

The 49ers' Gold Rush cheerleaders and the team's mascot Sourdough Sam will also be in attendance.

Alex Boone Naming Party at SF Zoo

061013-rhino-header.jpg

In fall 2012, what started as a simple day at the San Francisco Zoo for 49ers guard Alex Boone and his family led to an unlikely fascination with the Zoo?s newest acquisition, a four-year-old black rhino. The rhino?s strength, speed and critically endangered status struck a chord with Alex, and he asked, repeatedly, what he could do to help the Zoo. From his enthusiasm?and through a collaboration between the Zoo and the 49ers?the Alex Boone Animal Education Project was created to bring local at-risk youth to the Zoo. To thank Alex Boone for his efforts and continued support for the Zoo, the black rhino has been named ?Boone.?

On Friday, June 14, Alex Boone, the Gold Rush cheerleaders and Sourdough Sam will be at the San Francisco Zoo for the official ?Alex Boone Rhino Naming Party.? At 2 p.m., a 49ers VIP event will take place in the Nature Exploration Meadow, where special guests from the 49ers Academy in East Palo Alto and 49ers Kids Club will enjoy an afternoon snack, spray-on tattoos, ball-toss games, live music from the Raytones and goodie bags. At 3 p.m., all Zoo visitors are invited to the black rhino exhibit to see Alex Boone feed Boone the black rhino and unveil the honorary ?Boone? plaque.

?There are very few black rhinos left on this planet, so to have one named after me is truly an honor,? said 49ers guard Alex Boone. ?It?s awesome to share a close connection with a black rhino, but it?s even better that we can raise awareness for these endangered species through the Alex Boone Animal Education Project.? A common goal of the Zoo and the 49ers Foundation is to engage and educate local youth, and through Alex Boone?s unusual connection to a black rhino, they have found a way to do this together.

49ers Roster, 90-in-90 breakdowns: Alex Boone
By Tre9er on Jul 2 2013

20130208_mjr_su5_123.0_standard_709.0.jpg

USA TODAY Sports
Breaking down the 90 players on the 49ers offseason roster in 90 posts (over 90 or so days). Today we focus on Alex Boone

One of my favorite players is Alex Boone. If you've been here long, you know I've done a couple of articles on how well he held up when called upon back in the days when he was just a reserve lineman. There was a particular game against Arizona, I believe, where he played most of the contest at left tackle and essentially had a near flawless game. I long felt that he could be a legitimate LT in the NFL, but hey, I'll take a great right guard out of him, too.

When I say "great", I'm not just speaking out of homeristic love, either. Pro Football Focus has Boone rated as their third-best guard in the NFL for the 2012 regular season and even went so far as to name him the 49ers' "Secret Superstar".

I'm also pretty sure that one of the country's best zoos doesn't just go around naming Rhinoceroses after crappy players, but I didn't fact-check that.

Boone is a large man, very tall at 6'7", especially for a guard in the NFL. Many wondered if he could adequately play the position, which requires staying low and using power against large defensive linemen. Boone was considered to be more of an agile guy, suited to play on the edge, but he's made the transition about as well as anyone could have possibly imagined, giving up just four sacks and doing an excellent job in the run game.

Chances he improves in 2013

I think the odds are high here. As Boone learns more of the intricacies of the position and further gels with his line-mates, he should show steady improvement. He's the right combination of smart and nasty, and with big Anthony Davis by his side, I can see them clearing the way for 49ers running backs for years to come.

Chances he regresses in 2013

I suppose it's possible that D-linemen will figure out some of Boone's tricks and try to attack them now that there is some tape on the guy. He'll have to work hard to keep thwarting their efforts as time goes on. I think he's in the right situation though and I can't see him really going backwards.

Odds of making the roster

I'm not going to even dignify this with a response ... well, other than what I just wrote.

Gameday Q&A: Alex Boone

082313-Boone2-Header.jpg

Started from the bottom, now he?s here. Undrafted in 2010, Alex Boone was selected as a Pro Bowl alternate three years later for the San Francisco 49ers. The 6-foot-8, 300-pound right guard has worked hard, transforming his body to become a powerful force on one of the most respected offensive lines in the National Football League.

Boone?s personality is one of a kind. The same can be said about his performance on the field. The former tackle took on the challenge of lining up at guard to give the 49ers its best combination of starting offensive linemen in 2012. As a result, San Francisco?s running game continued to thrive, finishing last year with the league?s No. 4 rushing attack.

Boone and the four other members of the offensive line have formed a tight brotherhood. They?ve also built a level of accountability, pushing each other to set a standard of rough, tough play on a weekly basis. Boone is a character off the field. On it, he?s all business and all about winning football games.

This duality of Boone?s personality comes into focus in the latest Gameday cover story Q&A.

After every day of training camp, you and the offensive linemen are always in the cold tub. Tell me about the importance of the ?Cold Tub Club? ? and how does one become a member?

You have to be invited. You don?t just get to come into the cold tubs. We have our JAMBOX group. We listen to Skid Row on Pandora and we rock out our faces. You have to get in the cold tub after practice. If you don?t do that, you?re going to be hurting for a while.

The All-22 All-Stars: Alex Boone Stands Tall
By Robert Mays on September 5, 2013
i

Michael Zagaris/San Francisco 49ers/Getty Images
The All-22 All-Star Team is an attempt to provide some insight on the NFL's 22 most underappreciated players. Some will be All-Pros who haven't fully gotten their due; some will be names few casual fans have ever heard. All will, for one reason or another, have been overlooked.

The phone rang just after 3 a.m. Amy Boone didn’t know who was calling, but she knew why.

A few hours earlier, her son Alex had called from California. It was Super Bowl Sunday 2009, and the former Ohio State tackle was at a party near where he was training for the NFL combine. The night was old enough on the West Coast, and in her son’s voice, Amy could hear the gathering rage that sometimes came with his nights of heavy drinking. His sentences were sharp. His words were curt. He was starting to “sizzle.”

Amy asked to speak with Alex’s agent, a younger man about whom she’d had her reservations. Her son didn’t need another friend. He needed someone to tell him “no.” She asked that he take Alex home, while he might still be able to control her 6-foot-8, 330-pound son.

When the phone rang the second time, it was the Orange County Sheriff. Boone had gotten so drunk that he started jumping on the hoods of cars and trying to pull a tow truck by its cable. When confronted by police, he fled, and after finding him hiding under a porch, officers had to use a Taser — twice — to subdue Boone. After she got the call, Amy sunk to the floor. “All I could think,” she says, “was that his career was over.”

KNBR Conversation: 49ers guard Alex Boone
Saturday, September 7, 2013

  • Fourth-year guard Alex Boone excelled last season in his first year as a starter. Photo: Reed Hoffmann, Associated Press

An edited transcript of the conversation between 49ers guard Alex Boone and KNBR's Brian Murphy and Paul McCaffrey:

Murphy: How would you summarize how this locker room is feeling as your regular-season opener approaches?

Boone: I think everyone is feeling hungry. This is a team that understood what happened last year, had to wait all offseason and hear everybody talk about it, and now has a chance to finally go out and do something about it.

Murphy: How about your quarterback - he's got 10 starts in the NFL and he's on the cover of Sports Illustrated. He's naked in the ESPN Body Issue ... Maybe I should stop right there - can you tell us how that went over in the locker room?

McCaffrey: Got to give him a hard time a little bit, right?

Boone: Oh, absolutely. That did not go over very well at all. And the GQ cover was not any better, believe me.

Murphy: Oh, yeah - the GQ. ... Was he wearing a fuzzy yellow sweater or something?

Boone: Yeah, it didn't make sense. He had football pants on with a real nice coat. I was like, "Dude, I don't get them, uh ... I don't get what you're doing here, buddy." And he says, "Oh, dude - what do you mean you don't get it? I look great, look at this!"

Mike Iupati and Alex Boone talk about facing J.J. Watt
Posted on October 3, 2013
by Kevin Lynch in 49ers

Here’s a few things I picked up around the 49ers’ camp fire Thursday as they prepare for Sunday night’s game against those pesky Texans.

-Guards Mike Iupati and Alex Boone will contend with reigning defensive MVP J.J Watt and his bloodied face. Both Boone and Iupati have different approaches. The more laid-back Iupati is not given to expansive quotes or high praise.
Of Watt, Iupati said, “Good player,” Asked if Watt was the best defensive lineman he has faced, Iupati said, “I don’t know. Everybody we go up against is good.”
Iupati’s quotes shouldn’t be misconstrued as giving Watt short-shrift. Iupati likes to stay even keel, which is one reason why he’s a Pro Bowl player. Well, that and he’s 330 pounds, fast, powerful and has mad skills.
Boone was more effusive. Asked if he thought Watt was the best player he’s faced, Boone said, “I think so. He’s the reigning MVP. Other than the Super Bowl, this is my best test.”

Alex Boone to Jim Harbaugh: “He kicked me in the f***ing face!”
By Jason McIntyre October 13, 2013

Alameda Ta’amu, a defensive tackle on the Arizona Cardinals, kicked San Francisco’s Alex Boone in the face at the end of a play. Ta’amu’s kick was a result of Boone hitting Boone in the helmet. Pretty cut and dry incident, right? Try telling that to Jim Harbaugh, who reamed Boone when he came to the sideline, which sent the 6-foot-8, 300 pound Boone into a fit of rage. He screamed at Harbaugh, “he kicked me in the fu$king face!” and then after players pull Boone away from the coach, he still was ranting about the kick.
