Thrilled to see such a dramatic turnaround. The talent was always there...looks like his head has finally caught up. At this point, I'd be shocked if he isn't in the Pro Bowl. He has been incredible this year.

Alex Boone has a strange request for the San Francisco Zoo
Posted on January 3, 2013

What San Francisco 49ers? guard Alex Boone wants more than anything is a Super Bowl ring, which guarantees the holder a measure of immortality. Second on Boone?s list? Have the new rhinoceros at the San Francisco Zoo named after him, and quite possibly more immortality.
Boone and his family toured the zoo last month and when the zoo?s marketing department found out that a 49er was on the premises, they went and scooped up Boone?s family for a private tour. That?s when Boone became nose-to-Rhino horn with a three-year-old black rhino recently shipped up from the San Diego Safari Park.
?I didn?t even want to touch it; I was scared,? Boone said. ?But if they name it after me, I will give it a big hug.?
The zoo has named animals after San Francisco Giants? players. In November, an infant Francois Lunger monkey, which is appropriately orange in color, was named after closer Sergio Romo. A hippo roaming around the zoo grounds with the name Brian Wilson.
However, naming big animals like a rhino typically goes into a bidding process.
?We are a non-profit,? Communications Director Abigail Tuller noted. And like most non-profits, they are always looking for new revenue
That?s not stopping Boone who has even elicited the help of Romo, who he saw in the 49ers? locker room after a recent win.
?It would be nice to have a Boone rhino, with a big 75 on the side. Look at him,? Romo said, as he watched Boone head to his locker. ?He?s big like one, are you sure he isn?t one??
Introducing Alex ?The Rhino? Boone
Posted by Scott Kegley on January 12, 2013
Rhinos are hard-charging and consume roughly 50 pounds of food in a typical meal. But the similarities between that species and offensive linemen don?t end there.
One four-year old black rhino at the San Francisco Zoo will forever be linked to 49ers guard Alex Boone. The rhino is now named ?Boone? and Boone has likewise taken on the nickname of ?The Rhino.?
Boone met his new rhino last week while playing zookeeper for a day at the San Francisco Zoo. Tasks included cleaning up after the animals, feeding a giraffe, throwing fish to a polar bear, petting a porcupine and walking among the penguins. Then, Boone was able to hand-feed the rhino and arrange his dinner
Boone has also started an Instagram account (@TheRhino75).
Visitors will be able to see ?Boone? by visiting the San Francisco Zoo and can also donate to the Alex Boone Animal Education Project, an initiative that brings local youth to the San Francisco Zoo to learn leadership and respect through the theme of animal wellness.
49ers guard Alex Boone, Ravens retain their focus

NEW ORLEANS ? Bourbon Street behind him.
Harrah?s in front of him.
To San Francisco 49ers guard Alex Boone, there are plenty of reasons to be out and about this Super Bowl week.
But he finds more compelling ones to remain safely ensconced in the Marriott while the team counts down the days until Sunday?s Super Bowl XLVII against the Baltimore Ravens: spending time with his fellow offensive linemen.
?There?s a brotherhood on all teams, and especially among the offensive line,? Boone said Monday. ?Being in the hotel, secluded away from everybody, only going to meetings and then to practice, hanging out with teach other ? that builds camaraderie.
?That builds championships.?
Not that Boone didn?t make one brief visit outside.
?Dude, have you seen Bourbon Street?? he asked. ?The whole street is crazy.
?Back in the day, I would have loved it. Not any more.?

Alcohol nearly derailed career of 49ers lineman
By PETER FINNEY JR.
Last Updated: January 30, 2013
NEW ORLEANS ? As 49ers offensive lineman Alex Boone reflects on the world as he knew it in 2009, he sees a life didn?t seem to make much sense.
Boone showed up strutting at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis that February, bringing with him a body on loan from God. He was 6-foot-8 and 340 pounds, a little flabbier and less chiseled than he should have been, but his Ohio State pedigree of flattening defenders should have made NFL coaches and scouts drool.
Or so he thought.
When Boone left the 40-yard dashes and the shuttle runs for the interview room, he was in for the shock of his life. How could any organization this side of the CIA know so many intimate details about his love affair with alcohol?

DRINK IT IN: 49ers offensive lineman Alex Boone, who went undrafted out of Ohio State in 2009 because of an alcohol problem, got his life in order and now is just days away from a Super Bowl appearance.
?They had done their homework, and they knew things that nobody else knew, and I was like, ?How did you find that out? You must?ve called my Mom,? ? Boone, 25, said yesterday, five days before Super Bowl XLVII, about his battle with the bottle. ?It wasn?t just the stuff that was in the paper. They knew everything, and they were bringing stuff up. I was like, ?Wow, uh, no comment on that one.? ?

Boone's line switch pays off for 49ers

NEW ORLEANS ? The erstwhile missing piece on the 49ers' offensive line goes about 6-foot-8 and 300 pounds, topped by the hint of a faux-hawk haircut. Last season, he was hiding in broad daylight, appearing in short-yardage situations and on special teams.
Then again, it's a pretty big puzzle that Alex Boone has helped complete.
Each member of the the 49ers' offensive line ? when not in a down stance ? stands 6-3 or taller. In terms of weight, Boone is listed as the lightest man on a unit that bulldozed the way this season for the 49ers to gain 2,491 rushing yards (fourth in the NFL) on an average of 5.1 yards per carry (third).
"They're totally a different group than any team I think we've played," said Ravens All-Pro defensive lineman Haloti Ngata, who will line up across the way in Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday. "They're all big.
"They're kind of like Kansas City ? their whole O-line was big and physical. But this team seems like they have a little more quickness, watching their film."
Mammoth quickness ? it's a seeming contradiction ? is typified by Boone, who has been a pleasant surprise for the 49ers in his first season starting at right guard.
Before this season, Boone, who signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2009 and spent his rookie season on the practice squad, played tackle. But after right guard Adam Snyder signed with Arizona last spring, the 49ers opted to give Boone a shot at the starting job ? despite the fact that he's unusually tall for a guard.
The move meant Boone would typically be battling bigger interior linemen, not lithe pass rushers off the edge, with less time to react to their moves. With the rest of the line returning intact, offensive coordinator Greg Roman said, there were "a lot of questions on that spot" and how Boone would handle the change.
"You have to really be able to play with great quickness, short-area quickness, balance," Roman said. "Things are on you quicker, a lot of twists, blitzes. ? Somebody as long as Alex, you're not sure if he can play with that kind of quickness.
"It's something you have to see to believe, and the results have been just blowing us all away," Roman said. "Not only what he brings from a physical standpoint, but what he brings from an attitude, toughness standpoint just can't be overstated."
