OL Alex Boone (Official Thread)

Alex's mom is moving out there with him and he has a family full of good people who will try to help keep him on the right path. I know he has it in him to get his stuff together and he is a kind hearted kid who is trying to find his way. He would give any of you the shirt off his back and he does have the ability to buckle down. He knows he isn't in Columbus anymore.

He is fully aware how his actions have effected his draft status and his becoming undrafted. He knows what the problem is and is now focusing on getting rid of that problem.

On the field, my concern is the move to the right side. Alex has always been on the left. He is left handed. There will be an adjustment period as he works on some hand and footwork that will feel backwards. I hope he is given the time to make that adjustment.

Alex along with a couple other guys helped me out a lot last year as I was going through a really tough part of my life and I can speak first hand when I say that Alex deserves this chance to prove himself in San fran.

Thanks for the information Gomer, I believe that I speak for most on here that we are all pulling for Alex in not only his football future, but in his life as well.

A team with a weak o-line and a tough love kind of coach...Alex probably couldn't have found a better situation. Hope he makes the most of it.

I was more impressed with Alex at RT, when he filled in for an injured Kirk Barton, than I ever was with him at LT.

Changing sides will be an adjustment mostly with pass protection. Run blocking should be fine, which is what they will be looking for out the gate. Left hand\right hand doesn't mean anything on the OL. Actually if your dominate side is stronger (as mine was) then being a lefty would actually be better for a RT. Your power needs to come from the inside of the line. I would hope that Alex has been working more at RT this winter/spring in case he had to move. He has 10 years at LT so there isn't much more he could gain by continuing to work on that side.
I'm pulling for Alex to turn it around. He has the tools to be good if he can get his head on straight.

I don't want to get into a debate about where your power is coming from on a message board, but I am telling you right now that being a lefty is very conducive to playing the LT position. I understand about inside power (see term: Inside post leg) but, I promise that I know what I am talking about when handedness and linemen are concerned.

*and I have discussed the handedness with Alex as well. And he did spend time even during practice at times getting the feel for RT tech. (never live)

Also, run blocking will require a little bit of adjustment in the case of Alex because of the way Alex's "down" stance was. He still staggered larger than average even when we would run. I had to do a study on his stance during bowl practice last season.

Personally, I welcome the discussion between someone who played on the OL in college and someone who was recently on the football staff.

I agree - knowledgeable people with first-hand experience and differing opinions make for interesting discussions, imo.

Thanks for the insight, hawg and gomer. :)

So do I. Just didn't see a reason to start the post with a backhand and follow it up with a continuation of a debate that he didn't want to have.

Posters, like exhawg, grad, and others, that have actual knowledge of the technical aspects of football is a major reason why I come here. If Gomer is able to add to that then that's great. I just took exception to the tone of his message board comment.

I'll go wash the sand out of my vag now.

I'm not going to argue about this. I base my theory on 5 years of playing LT at a D1A school. I'm right handed and was much stronger on the left side than the right. Maybe I'm not normal.
The hardest part for me was getting used to a left handed stance since they had everyone use their right hand in high school. Coming from a larger HS program Alex may put his left hand down by default, which would make for a harder transition to the right side. After a few weeks of college 2-a-days I was pretty much ambidextrous with my stance.

I didn't mean to sound short. I meant no offense.

exhawg, I can understand you feeling strong with your right hand on the inside move from LT and I also understand your punch arm is inside as well. As you all probably know, most people are right handed, so many times a righty will get used to playing on the left side from the jump, but a left handed tackle will usually end up playing on the left side.

I was also an O lineman (not at the D1 level and I would never claim to be on that level as a player) and always felt more comfortable on the right side. I am right handed.

Quick Hits with T Alex Boone

Tackle Alex Boone signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent after having a very successful collegiate career at Ohio State. TV 49 caught up with him during the recent rookie minicamp. Here?s the Q&A from that interview.

Q: How did the rookie minicamp go for you?
A: Well they said it wasn?t going to rain out here and it rained both days so I?m a little skeptical about what?s going to happen. Other than that it?s been really fun.

Q: What were you able to accomplish and focus on during camp?
A: Just learning the plays, getting them down, learning the system and readjusting to the speed of the game. It?s been good.

Q: When you came out here, you probably didn?t think you would be doing circuit training. How did that go for you?
A: Terrible, absolutely. (Laughs) That?s why I need my hand right here (against the locker) to post me up. It?s alright though.

Q: What will you be doing between minicamp and the start of organized team activities (OTAs)?
A: Running, every single minute of every day.

Q: What was the best part about playing football at Ohio State?
A: The best part about playing was just the guys and the camaraderie and I see that here with this team. I?m excited to get to know these guys and I?m looking forward to it.

Q: Coming from the Big-10, I know you went up against some good competition. Who was the best player you matched up against?
A: I would have to say that Brian Orakpo would be one (of them). Matt Shaughnessy would be another one. Obviously (Aaron) Maybin was good. There was a whole bunch of them. Every game I played there was somebody good ? Alec Magee. Guys like that are good to go.

Q: What was your favorite game that you played in at Ohio State?
A: Any Michigan game was probably my favorite.

Q: Do you have any memories that stand out from those games?
A: The fact that we beat them every year, that?s about it. I have a short-term memory so I?m thinking quick.
