OL Alex Boone (Official Thread)

Joe Staley, Nate Clements injury updates/MNF Thread
by Fooch on Nov 2, 2009

The 49ers just released updated information. Since we also need a Monday Night Football thread, feel free to use this for everything.

The 49ers are reporting that CB Nate Clements suffered a right fractured scapula Sunday and will be sidelined 6-8 weeks. LT Joe Staley suffered sprains to the MCL and PCL of his right knee and will be sidelined for 6 weeks. DT Demetric Evans suffered an AC sprain in his left shoulder and will miss 3 weeks.

This is definitely not a good thing. The Staley injury means Barry Sims will be in the starting lineup for the next six weeks at least. Something a bit more interesting is that maybe this means Alex Boone will be coming off the practice squad. When a player is signed off the PS he has to stay on the roster for at least three weeks, which wouldn't be a problem in this case.

As the 49ers cope with turnover along their offensive line, Alex Boone keeps working toward a promotion off the practice squad. The 6-foot-7, 328-pound tackle was a two-time All-Big Ten selection while at Ohio State.

"He just needs to continue to mature and understand what it means to be a tackle at this level," Singletary said. "He's doing a good job, just not ready yet."

Alex Boone, OT. Along with RB Kory Sheets, Boone was the 49ers' most prized undrafted free agent in 2009. He handled himself well in training camp and spent the year on the practice squad. Boone's issue is that he lacks quickness. He is a right tackle only. Boone arrived with the 49ers weighing close to 328 pounds. Seeing him in the locker room at the end of the season, it was obvious he lost a significant amount of weight, and I'm told he's now down to around 305 pounds. How that translates to the field this offseason will be interesting. The 49ers have two unrestricted free agents at offensive tackle --.Tony Pashos and Barry Sims. What happens to them and whether the 49ers draft a tackle will help determine where Boone fits in this season. A safe bet would be another season on the practice squad.

T Alex Boone: The 49ers took a chance when they signed him as an undrafted free agent. Boone, who had some notable run-ins with the law, maintained his focus last season on the practice squad. He showed during training camp that he just wasn't ready for this level of competition. But the 49ers kept him around on the practice squad to have him work on his footwork. The 49ers are holding out hope that he can develop into a contributing right tackle, but he has a long ways to go.

Boone a boon

This off-season and the upcoming draft for the 49ers seems largely to be about finding a right tackle. But that player might be right on their roster. One of you asked about who is in good shape and the winner of that contest is Alex Boone.

Boone, who made the practice squad last year as a formless 340-pound road grader from Ohio State, dropped 40 pounds during the season last year. Now he's packed on 25 pounds of muscle. From where he was a year ago, he's almost unrecognizable.

Alex Boone in his Buckeye days.

"Coaches are pleased," Boone said. ""They say what are you about 300?" and I say, '325.' And they say, 'Wow.'"

Last year's rookie free agent was presented with a quandary because he was so disappointed in his performance in preseason games and in training camp. So he was forced to rectify two statements he made Tuesday.

"I just hate not playing," Boone said. And then he said, "fact is I'm a fat guy that loves to eat bad food." Turns out Boone hates not playing more than he loves bad food.

After losing the weight, Boone returned to Ohio and worked out with former Saint and Brown offensive lineman LeCharles Bentley. Also a former Buckeye, Bentley retired after a knee surgery in Cleveland resulted in a staph infection. Bentley is now a cut 280 pounds and Boone's inspiration.

"Working out with him was the best thing that ever happened to me," said Boone, who came to the 49ers with a slightly checkered past. Projected as a second- or third-round pick as a junior, Boone gained weight and gained a reputation for being unaccountable as a senior. Shortly before the draft, Boone was arrested for jumping on cars and banging on garage doors while he was partying in Los Angeles. The move caused him to drop off draft boards.

The 49ers took a flyer on him and despite Boone being woefully out of shape, he still made the practice squad. Then as the season progressed, Boone just kept getting slimmer. It was the talk of the offensive line end of the locker room.

Once he hit 300, he began the process of building himself back up and that included cutting his body fat from 26 percent to 19 percent with the goal of getting to 15. He's doing it through increased cardio activity and taking less time between reps while working out. Boone said he consumes 500 grams of protein among his intake of 6,000 daily calories, which entails stuffing himself with lean chicken, veggies, brown rice and protein shakes.

Boone has yet to realize the fruits of his bodywork because he's going through another transition - going from left to right tackle.

"It's just weird, having to re-learn all the steps," he said. Boone is staying late after practice and working with coaches on his footwork. Nevertheless, Boone noticed a difference in foot speed.

"Last year I was always trailing Dyral Briggs," Boone said of the team's jack rabbit but undersized rush linebacker. "But now I can keep up."

Already known as a menacing run blocker, if Boone's "Biggest Loser" routine speeds up his feet in pass pro, it would be a boon to the team.

Boone pushing hard for playing time in 2010
Alex Boone isn't going to win any "Best Body" awards in the 49ers locker room. That honor still belongs to Vernon Davis. (Just ask him). But Boone is the runaway winner of the "Most Improved Body" award. The former Ohio State lineman went undrafted last season and spent his rookie year on the practice squad. Boone said he couldn't stand not playing, and that is what inspired him to become a workout freak this offseason.

Boone said he began working out with former NFL player LeCharles Bentley in Cleveland a week after the season ended. He worked out six days a week and changed his routine. He took shorter breaks between repetitions. He added more cardio and essentially worked a lot harder. As a result, his body fat dropped from 25 percent at this time last year to about 19 percent today. At one point, his weight had ballooned to a sloppy 340 pounds. He concentrated on dropping weight during the season last year and fell to 300. He's now replaced the lost weight with muscle and weighs 325.

The hardest part? "The fact that I'm a fat guy and I love bad food," Boone said. The question, of course, is whether Boone's metamorphosis will allow him to contribute this year. Boone said he certainly feels better, is more confident and doesn't get winded as easily. Last year his issue was footwork - both the speed of his feet and learning how to play on the right side after being a left tackle with the Buckeyes. He backed up Adam Snyder at right tackle during the OTA sessions that ended today.

Sounds like Alex is finally getting serious about his athletic career. Good for him. And better late than never. Let's hope he can become the great one in San Francisco that we all thought he could be at tOSU.
:osu:

Absolutely.

It's a shame that he didn't have that kind of fire when he was at Ohio State.

Kudos to the young man. It is always easy to blame others or blame situations for your problems, and to give up. When he messed up his draft stock with that drunken outburst, he had two ways to go. He chose the hard road, and through sacrifice and work he has already accomplished much. His coaches see that he is serious about his approach to the game, and willing to do the things he needs to help his team succeed. And, no matter what happens, he will never have to wonder "what might have been" had he applied himself. Now he will give it his best shot and see what happens, which is all anyone can do.

Congratulations Mr. Boone.
