OL Alex Boone (Official Thread)

So are you saying that there aren't teams out there willing to give Jones, Vick, Burris et al another shot, or are you saying that Boone doesn't have the requisite talent? Let's remember that this is the league that has no problems with wife beaters, drunks and drug users.

I'm saying they DO have a problem with "wife beaters, drunks, and drug users" but as you pointed out if he is talented enough they will take that risk. Thing is my point was it will impact his status negatively, not that nobody would take a shot period. In other words, someone who might have been a fringe 2nd rounder goes to being a fringe 5th rounder if he has enough "baggage" with him.

Boone does not have the talent of a Jones/Vick, nor did those two have their current set of problems when they were drafted.

Being given a shot doesn't change the fact that their selection spot and contract are drastically lower.

Not necessarily as a rookie. Most of the guys you list further down have actually done something in the NFL. Boone is kind of an unknown to the NFL brass and his off-field issues won't help him one bit.

I think you and I are in basic agreement.

It's a business and not one that is particullarly concerned with a person's past, or present, off field behavior.

In one sense it is a meritocracy, if by merit you mean only what someone can do between the sidelines. It doesn't mean that Boone's off field behavior won't cost him some money. It doesn't mean that there aren't some owners who'll walk away from a troubled pick, but at least three owners, Jerry Jones, Al Davis and Mikey Boy, could give a hoot.

A dream chance for local players

Michigan State quarterback Brian Hoyer, Michigan tight end Mike Massey and Ohio State offensive tackle Alex Boone are among a handful of local players who will work out for the Browns on April 14 in Berea.

Boone is working hard to overcome two alcohol-related arrests in the past three years, but said at the Combine that he's working hard to overcome his issues and that any team drafting him won't regret it.

Alex is rated as #12 in thos look at OTs in the draft.

CFN

12. Alex Boone, Ohio State 6-7, 325 A mega-disappointment considering his raw skills, Boone has a large frame and the strength to go with it as a blaster for the running game and an occasional dominant force. Occasional. He's not consistent, is a bit of a prima donna, and he has major character issues in the eyes of most of the NFL types. If he gets the right attitude and decides he wants to do the dirty work on his technique, he could be a ten-year starter on the right side. As is, he's a good-chance pick just because of his size.

pretty unreal......if he had come out last year, he was AT WORST, a second rounder. Now, he will be an undrafted free agent due to raised concerns over alcoholism and team attitude issues.

As the above poster stated, if he can get over his personal issues, he's an absolute steal. Hopefully, he can do it. There is no reason he can't start at RT, maybe even LT in the league.

If it hasn't hit him already, this is a dose of reality.

Hopefully, he can take this in stride, sign with a team and work his tail off to make the roster and compete.

Keep clean and be a hard-working team guy.
