COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With two weeks to go until the Ohio State football team heads back to camp, the players are out enjoying their last days of summer. NBC 4 Sports' Omar Ruiz caught up with Buckeye Alex Boone to see what a day in the life of an Ohio State left tackle was like.
"Fore!" Boone yelled as he took a swing at the driving range. "Ah, see now you've got me thinking about camp," he told Ruiz.
At 6 feet 8 inches tall, the 325-pound Buckeye showed Ruiz that he should definitely stick to football.

Boone ready to prove haters wrong this year

It's hard to believe anyone would have the nerve to approach a 6-foot-8, 312-pound man/mountain and say anything negative, but Ohio State offensive tackle Alex Boone says it happens all the time.
"They always bring up the bad memories," Boone said. "Some people are nice, but a lot of times it's like, 'What was it like to lose to LSU or Florida?' and you're like, 'Really, dude?' "
And if that's the sentiment on his own campus, imagine how the rest of the nation feels.
ESPN.com reporter Mark Schlabach imagined it recently, when he declared Ohio State was the nation's "most-hated" program, based mostly on the Buckeyes having lost the past two national championship games.

Alex Boone once weighed 340 pounds, but he played at about 325 the past two seasons and has pared down even more during the offseason.

Amy Boone remembers coming home from work and seeing a plate in the sink with six corn-dog sticks on it.

"Was that lunch?" she asked her son, Alex.

"No, something else was for lunch," he answered. "That was a snack. What's for dinner?"

Back then, Alex was the next big thing -- literally -- a 6-foot-8, 315-pound offensive tackle, a Parade All-American at Lakewood St. Edward High School and a prized member of Ohio State's 2005 recruiting class.

Years later, Boone has had a fine Ohio State career, starting 23 games at left tackle. But he has yet to truly leave a mark, and that nags at him. He is determined to make his senior season one to remember.

"I don't think I'm even close to where I want to be," he said. "I have a lot to work on."

And that's where his family helps out. Although his parents divorced when he was 6 years old and his father, Jim, moved to California for 10 years, Alex still grew up surrounded by mentors.

Amy's two brothers, Rich and Keith Sulzer, played football for the College of Wooster. They coached and tutored young Alex. Amy's eldest son, J.J., also was a strong influence.

"This has always been a big football family," Amy said. "I've been watching football since I was 5 years old. To me, there's nothing like the fall -- the crunch of leaves and the smashing of helmets."

Boone was a legend at his buddies' informal wing-eating contests, routinely polishing off 60 or more.

But those days are over. Alex played at about 325 the past two seasons, and this offseason has worked his body fiendishly. He is listed at 312 pounds, and that appears to be accurate.

"He's in the best shape of his life right now," Amy said.

Then, with a tinge of wonder in her voice, she added, "He's even eating vegetables."

If I had one play and had to call it and only it for an entire game, that play would be dive left with Beanie putting his head down and churning his legs right behind the butts of Alex & Steve...and I'd feel pretty damn good about getting 3-1/2 yards every single time. :biggrin:
