OL Alex Boone (Official Thread)

That's awesome news! Boone is an exceptionally important cog in the wheel for a run at a national championship! I think this is also a smart decision by him, as he needed one more year of maturing. He's gonna make a lot more $$$ now in next year's draft.

Importantly, he's also the key to Chris Wells running for the Heisman!:biggrin:

Ohio State offensive tackle Boone to return for senior year

1/13/2008, 10:33 p.m. EST The Associated Press
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Ohio State offensive tackle Alex Boone said Sunday that he'll put off entering the NFL draft for one year to play his senior season with the Buckeyes.
Boone said he wants another chance to win a national championship. Ohio State lost to LSU 38-24 on Jan. 7, the second straight year the Buckeyes came up short in the BCS title game.
The 6-foot-8, 320-pound Boone also said he'd like to compete for the Outland Trophy, which goes to the nation's top college football lineman. Players have until Tuesday to declare for April's NFL draft.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

DISPATCH FILE PHOTO
Linebacker James Laurinaitis is the only Ohio State junior who has yet to announce his intentions regarding the NFL draft.

While Ohio State waits to learn whether linebacker James Laurinaitis will return for his senior year, the Buckeyes received plenty of good news yesterday from current and future players who plan to be on campus next season, including massive left tackle Alex Boone. Boone has decided to stay for his senior season after contemplating leaving a year early to enter the NFL draft.
"It doesn't feel right to leave right now," he said.
Last week, linebacker Marcus Freeman said pretty much the same thing, as did cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and receiver Brian Robiskie. Only defensive end Vernon Gholston has said he is leaving early.

Quotes form Alex about the OL

On J.B. Shugarts
"I have seen a lot out of J.B. Coach Bollman is so smart when he teaches our guys and it can be difficult to keep up. So far, he is keeping up really well and has done a great job."

On the freshmen
"They are doing a great job. (Mike) Brewster is learning each day and doing a great job; J.B. (Shugarts) is doing a really good job. They just have to keep it up and we will see what happens."

On the biggest adjustment for the freshmen
"At this level it is not just about knowing your assignments. You are playing with guys who are older than you and have been at this level; it is not high school anymore. At this stage everyone is amazing. They have to put their pads on and learn to hit and get hit and take the pain."

Great left tackle. He would of probably been at least a Top 10 pick if he entered the draft last season. However, I love to see kids come back for their senior season. It shows that getting a degree is important to them and that they can wait on the NFL. In this case, he can get better this season and can win a National Title this season, too.

I think top 10 is a bit too optimistic for Boone in the draft after last year, he's an unbelievable LT no doubt, but I think he needed (needs) a big year this year to truly become a lock in the top 10. It will be interesting to see if he starts getting hype like Joe Thomas or Jake Long did as a premier college tackle. If he does, it will be pretty cool to see the three premier tackles in college football all come from the Big Ten the last three years.

I try to watch every player for at least a few plays so I can't really concentrate on anyone the entire game but I remember one time Boone shut down Lawrence Wilson in pass protection. It was very impressive. He had great footwork and showed a lot of strength. It looked Orlando Pace-esque.

Looking like mean, lean, fighting machine.
