Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Probable matchups in Minnesota Friday night...
125 Malik Heinselman #11 vs. Patrick McKee #9...Malik holds 2-1 edge against him but hasn't wrestled him since 2020.
133 Dylan Koontz vs. Jake Gliva #29...Koontz just hasn't put it together this year.
141 Dylan D'Emilio #20 vs. Jake Bergeland #15...looks like a tossup.
149 Sammy Sasso #2 vs. Michael Blockhus #30... finally looking for Sammy to major somebody.
157 Jashon Hubbard #33 vs. Brayton Lee #4...this could be a major too, but not fot OSU.
165 Carson Kharchla #4 vs. Cael Carlson (NR)... CK should come out on fire after his week off.
174 Ethan Smith #7 vs. Bailee O'Reilly #18 ... "The Hammer" is in a good groove right now.
184 Kaleb Romero #6 vs.Isaiah Salazar #20...seems to be a tight one despite the ranking difference.
197 Gavin Hoffman #21 vs. Michael Hoy (NR)...Gavin may be our most improved wrestler with some big wins lately.
285 Tate Orndorff #13 vs. Gable Stevenson #1...no comment
This would be the best matchup of the season if all these guys wrestle. Best matches should be 125,141, and 184. Fri.night at 9 EST on BTN.

Buckeyes had a very successful trip to Minnesota and will return to the Covelli Center on Sunday afternoon at 1pm against Indiana on Big Ten Plus.

125 Heinselman won over a higher ranked McKee with 4 take downs!
133 Koontz kept the score reasonably close but he's a freestyler trying to wrestle folk.
141 Finally! After wrestling 'murderer's row' the last few weeks in Micic, Eireman,N.Lee,etc. D'Emilio said "Enough" and pinned #15 Bergeland with a
hopover move Logan Steiber has been teaching him. Needless to say Logan was really excited.
149 Sasso had a tough match with #39 Blockhus who took Sammy down several times before losing the dec.
157 Isaac Wilcox may have earned this spot the remainder of the season even though he only wrestled a few minutes because Lee couldn't continue.
Wilcox had a nice early td before #4 Lee defaulted.
165 Nice to see Kharchla back even though he looked winded coming down the stretch. That kid Carlson has quite a motor.
174 Ethan "the hammer" Smith had little trouble in his match.
184 Still no Romero so Rocky tried for his 2nd straight upset but came up just short. If he wouldn't have gave up a tilt in the last seconds of the 2nd
period he would've beat Salazar.
195 Hoffman was upset by Foy. Good thing the Buckeyes were already locked in by this time.
285 Tate didn't get pinned. That's the good news.

Buckeyes rolling through the Big Ten's lower rated schools and the return of Kaleb Romero.

125 Heinselman started off with a td and turned in a bow and arrow 4 pt.near fall move vs. Moren. Went on to a 10-2 dec.
133 D.Koontz got the 1st td vs.#10 Huskins and was tied with him after 2nd but allowed his opponent to take him down with 2 seconds left to lose 5-3.
141 Only match of the day with two ranked opponents as #20 Dylan D'Emilio took on #32 Caden Rooks. Dylan had 4 tds and took the major 10-2. Really improving.
149 I know Sasso is a counter-wrestler but I counted 7 times G.Rooks got in on the legs. May not bode well in the Big Tens. To Sammy's credit though Rooks never finished those moves
and lost to Sasso 3-1.
157 Isaac Wilcox beat Kervin 3-2 to make it 14-3 at Halftime.
165 Kharchla in a huge mismatch against a guy whose name (Kasper McIntosh) sounded like he worked for the BBC. 7 tds and a NF led to a major 20-4.
174 Ethan the Hammer Smith beat up on South with 7 tds and a reversal for a major.
184 Kaleb Romero made quick work of a substitute wrestler by pinning him at 2:25 of 1st period.
197 Hoffman beat Willham in an uneventful 3-1 dec.
285 Tate started by getting headbutted by Bullock and had to take off several minutes to get right but he came back and won an 8-3 dec
Final Score 34-3.

Jesse Mendez update...

Tonight (2/19) is the Indiana State Finals, and I'm sure there are many opponents of Mendez that are happy to shake his hand
one last time and wave goodbye as they're glad he's moving one state over. So far in the tournament he's recorded an opening round Tech, a 15 sec.
pin in the Quarters, and a pin 25 sec. into the 2nd per. in the semis. To top it off, his opponent in tonight's finals was in his same
sectional and the last 3 times they've met Mendez has 1. pinned him in 1st 2.Tech fall in 2nd and 3. Tech fall in 2nd. Looking forward to how he does over the summer and then next fall when it hits the proverbial fan.

edit..Mendez ended his incredible Indiana prep career with another pin. Congratulations to him and keep it going next season in Columbus!

A very distant 4th place going into the final session
Only Sasso in the finals and even that was 1-1 until 20 seconds left
Overall this just seemed........incredibly disappointing.
I don't know much about wrestling, but I sure hope next year is better than this.

You don't need to know much about it bc your instincts are right. This is just tragically bad on every level. If we don't get better by a lot next year, Coach Ryan is going to be on the hot seat. We've got a great recruiting class coming in and I didn't think we were going to be a title contender this year, so next year should be very good. But we're underperforming at almost every spot this year. Honestly I don't think we'll sniff the top 5 at NCAA's and probably land outside the top 10 unless everything goes right.

I don't think every wrestler we put out there this weekend underperformed but some sure did. Going through the weights...
125..Malik performed about to his seed and beat the guys he should have.
133..Koontz actually also performed about what we all expected..non-competitively and will not be in the lineup next year.
141..Dylan D'Emilio went above expectations this year, particularly in the second half.
149..Everyone was disappointed in the finals result and I think Sasso is the better wrestler and may have another shot to prove it.
157.. Several guys were just keeping this spot warm for Gallagher so the expectations are all on Paddy in 22-23.
165..This I agree was a slight disappointment but being ranked #1 and losing in SV in the semis ain't bad.
174..Again agree here that Smith underperformed the 1st round but he came back through wrestle-backs to place.
184..Romero maybe underperformed in the semis but overall he had a good year and really improved. Hope he returns.
197.. Hoffman has been underperforming (at least going by his press clippings coming out of h.s.) so yeah 197 will be interesting.
Hwt.. Don't think I could take another year of Tater. It's either Feldman gives up his r.s.or hit the portal again!

What I think this team really needs is attitude. Or passion to win. Or inner fire. Call it whatever works for them. But Bucks don't seem to have anyone that gets the crowd buzzing before his name is announced. I think Bouzakis may bring that if he isn't stifled. Others may too. We'll have to see.

Overall I pretty much agree with a few caveats. Malik has just underperformed by a lot compared to what he was supposed to be coming in, he did about what we expect of him now but he's not going to AA and that would have been the base level expectation coming in. Koontz I expected nothing from really, but to have both DeCatur brothers flop in the lower weights is a head scratcher. D'Emilio did about what I expected. Sasso is great but he wrestles too many close matches to not drop one like that here and there, he'll be good at the tourney. 157 I have nothing to add, spot on. Kharchla and Smith both are champs at Iowa or PSU imo, not getting the most out of those guys right now. Romero is a guy that could end up being a NCAA finalist and just didn't have his day, hopefully the tourney treats him better. The last two weights I'm not even going to address because both have been so far off the mark of what they were supposed to be here.

Maybe we'll rally in the tourney, but this cannot be the standard for our program moving forward. I'll watch the NCAA's as always and enjoy it because wrestling is awesome. But we have to improve our results big time. Keep in mind that Malik, the DeCaturs, Kharchla, Rocky Jordan and Hoffman were all top rated guys, or damn near there. Kharchla has plenty of time and has done well, but the rest have not come near their billing.

I think there was talk last year during his red shirt that he would go 174 this year. Then they moved Smith up instead. Do you think the weight cut is what his problem is because in the Hamiti match he definitely didn't have energy. Of course that kid Hamiti is such a ball of energy everyone looks bad by comparison. Their were also other times during the season he really seemed to be laboring. Maybe the bad shoulder was a factor.

He could be cutting too much, wondered that myself. I think 174 is a much more natural weight. Kharchla could be one of our dudes, but injuries and cutting weight might both be issues... he is someone that I have zero doubts on effort and talent. Everywhere else aside from Sasso I am pretty worried on though unless our incoming class takes care of business.

Here's the 1st round draws for the OSU wrestlers in next Thursday's opening NCAA round...
125 Malik Heinselman #12 vs. Taylor Lamont (Utah Valley) #21 seed, 10-4 rec.
141 Dylan D'Emilio #17 vs.Quinn Kinner (Rider)#16 seed, 18-6 rec.
149 Sammy Sasso #4 vs. Jonn Prceiri (Buffalo) #24 seed, 22-10 rec.
165 Carson Kharchla #7 vs. Lucas Revero (Penn) #26 seed, 19-11 rec.
174 Ethan Smith #7 vs. Tyler Eischens (Stanford) #26 seed, 19-10 rec.
184 Kaleb Romero #7 vs. Donnell Washington (Indiana) #26 seed, 19-10 rec.
197 Gavin Hoffman #21 vs. Tanner Sloan (S.Dakota St.) #12 seed, 20-5 rec.
285 Tate Orndorff #13 vs. Joe Doyle (Binghampton) #20 seed, 14-9 rec.

141 will be interesting as D'Emilio goes against former Buckeye Kinner. This will be one of two
opening round matches where the Buckeye wrestler is seeded lower than his opponent, the
other being at 197 which was a pretty tough draw for Hoffman.Go Bucks!

Really thought we got better seeds than I expected, but then remembered some of the guys have won plenty of matches in the tourney that probably drove those seeds (Sasso and Smith particularly, I think Tate also somehow AA'ed last year). Malik has a pretty rough draw at 125, Lamont is a stud. Also interested in the D'Emilio and Kinner match.
