Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Flying back to Ohio on Wednesday and heading up to Cleveland early Thursday morning with my pops and some friends. To any other fans heading up, the university is trying to coordinate our colors for all sessions. The first session (Thursday) is black, the second session (Friday) is white, and the last day (Saturday) is scarlet. Should be a blast. Obviously we have to wrestle our best again to win this thing, but these are the 5 keys to me:

(1) McKenna needs to stay on a roll and place top 3 (preferably get in finals). A big part of winning the B1G like we did was Joey winning 141. At nationals, most of the top contenders are not from the B1G, so that is a major wildcard in the tourney versus last weekend. He HAS to perform at a high level. If he can get into the finals, I think that is a total game changer.

(2) Campbell wins 2 matches, maybe 3. I think he should win his first match, but loses the second. Get a couple back in consolations and that would be a huge contribution from Campbell at this point. He cannot go winless for us.

(3) Pletcher needs to take top 4. I personally think he could win it all if he wrestles well, but more realistically he needs to get in the semis and then fight his way into the 3rd place match (I don't see him beating Micic, although perfectly possible).

(4) Jordans also need to take top 4. Preferably, Bo gets in the finals and I think he can. But I think Bo goes down to Hall and Mic loses early on to LaValle, so both need to fight back and score in the consolations. Good news is that they almost always do that. I think Mic really needs to get on the podium for us and I think he does. I also could see either in the finals really (if Nolf is not at 100% at 157)...regardless, those two need to score a bunch of points for us.

(5) Bonus in the first two rounds. Aside from winning, we need bonus to keep up with PSU. We should be getting pins/techs/majors from 125, 141, 149 (maybe, at least the 1st round), 157 (again maybe, at least 1st round), 174, 184, 197 and Hwt. Those first 2 rounds are crucial to rack up the points. I also think we have a good chance to score bonus into the semis with 125, 184, 197 and Hwt. Need Snyder to carry the torch and will his way to techs and pins.

Should be a great tournament and I am going to have a tough time waiting for Thursday. Go Bucks!

While it's HS wrestling, it's still pretty dang big for states

Really impressed with David Carr out of Perry; think he ended up 40-0 at 152 and is headed to ISU so congrats to him

OSU commit Jaden Mattox goes 45-1 and wins at 160

Also, Rocky Jordan went 42-0 and won at 170; Tanner went 44-3 and won at 113. We get it....you're a talented wrestling family.

Jashon Hubbard lost to SPG's Joey Sanchez (Wiscy commit) in the finals but overall a great showing

Had a chance to watch both D1 and D2 Ohio finals tonight. The kid at 170 in D1 Carson Kharchla was impressive. He had some very college ready techniques. I'm sure OSU is looking at him hard. Mattox took some risks in his match and did a lot chirping with the refs and his opponent... maybe too much for my taste. The score was close and he never looked dominant. Carr looked solid, kinda expected something more dominant but he won easily. Both Decatur kids looked solid as well. Haven't gotten to Jordan's match yet.

Haven't gotten to Jordan's match yet.

Easy for me to say, but I like that he took some risks. To me that shows he wants to make things happen.

Also, of course Rocky winning the title is good but I am interested in your take on his match. Reading elsewhere he took a stall point and was ridden the entire thirs period. The bottom hasn’t been a forte for the Jordans it seems.

Kharchla is outstanding and I love his style, OSU is definitely on him...could be the top guy at his weight next year. I saw the results but won't get to watch the finals on my dad's DVR until I fly back to Ohio.

And for @bigdog3300 , I don't believe Tanner Jordan is related to the rest of the Jordans.

Had a chance to watch it this evening...
1st Period
One min into the match Jordan is up 5-0 on a TD and 3pt NF after a nice TD and two on one tilt. At this point it looks like the match is going to get out of hand but Jordan starts riding parallel and gets hit with a stall warning for not doing anything on top and that seemed to be turning point. Then with 30 seconds left the other kid escapes pretty easily
1st period ends 5-1

2nd Period
Jordan is on top. He gets hit with a locked hands call trying to stop an inside switch and then right after the other kid escapes so now its 5-3. Jordan shoots and the other kid counters and almost gets a go behind and at this point Jordan got conservative and doesn't take another attempt. A lot of Russian and two on one ties with no intent to convert. Just kinda hanging on the the wrist
2nd period ends 5-3

3rd Period
The other kid is on top and looks decent in that position. Nothing for the first min... Jordan not getting any separation. The other kid gets a leg in and tries a crab tilt for some back points. He gets one swipe. With 20 seconds he tries it again and comes close to getting some swipes. At this point Jordan gets hit with a stall warning - gives up one point. Jordan's not making any attempt to get out from bottom. With 10 seconds the other kid tries the crab tilt but it's less effective and he's not close to getting swipes. Match ends 5-4

I'd have to see more of Rocky's matches over the course of the year to see if this is something he needs to work on. He definitely shut it down early and coasted on the 5 points he put up 30 seconds into the match.

Bus carrying the wrestling team to Cleveland got stuck in a 70 car/truck accident on I-71N last night. Probably were detained a few hours stuck in "traffic". Thank goodness no major injuries to anyone in the pile up.

Since I can't watch until Friday night at earliest the flow dashboard will suffice. It's like a constant cliff hanger. Moore had that match and seemed to be on his way to a major. But squeaks out 10-8 after being stuck at 17 seconds to go in round 3 for what seemed like forever! And then edited to 12-8.
