Ohio State Women's Volleyball (Official Thread)

The Ohio State women’s volleyball team has named former four-year standout for the Buckeyes, Jen Flynn Oldenburg, as their new head coach.

Oldenburg graduated from Ohio State in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in sport and leisure studies and spent the 2001 season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Buckeyes. During her time as a player from 1996-99, she recorded 3,213 career assists (7th) and 1,138 digs (12th). She was also the first conference player to be named All-Big Ten at two different positions (setter and outside hitter). She was an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete every year and was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

After college, Oldenburg went on to be the starting setter for the USA National Team and helped lead the team to a silver medal at the 2002 World Championship. She also started for the Grand Rapids Force (USPV) and played on the USPV “Dream Team.”

She is returning to the Ohio State coaching staff after spending six years as the club/associate director of the Pittsburgh Elite Volleyball Association, where she was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the club, handled recruitment for potential collegiate athletes and worked as a private lessons instructor.

“I would like to thank Gene Smith, Janine Oman and the Ohio State athletics leadership for the tremendous opportunity and privilege of leading the women’s volleyball program,” Oldenburg said. “I am honored and humbled to accept such an important role during such an exciting time for the program. With the overwhelming support I have felt from the administration from the second I returned to campus along with the love that has been shared from the alumni, I cannot wait to get started with this group of talented young women to lead them back to the national stage.”

I’m wondering how in the hell this women’s team has an 8-0 record, in a conference that has teams currently ranked #1 (Wiscy), #4 (Corn), #5 (Minny), and #8 (Penn St), and is NOT in the top 25 right now. They have a win over Penn St.

B1G standings

Here is the current poll. TTUN, with a record of 0-3 and sitting dead last in the conference, is the first team outside the top-25, just ahead of tOSU. WTF?

Cause we've only played one of those ranked teams. We've barely beaten Maryland twice (at home in 5) who is sitting tied for 12th (1-8), Iowa (2-7) twice and one went to 5, Michigan St (2-5) twice before the back to back quality wins over PSU (3-3 and probably WAY overrated at #8) and Illinois (2-5). So.... we've beaten no one I would consider "elite" in the B1G... heck with the shrunken tournament this year we are still VERY much on the bubble. We have a pretty brutal run near the end of the year... Considering this is Jen's first team, and they are SUPER young, a Top 5/6 finish would be incredible, but may not actually get an NCAA tournament bid with the format allocation has this year.

Still... this team is HELLA entertaining (young and like 5 set thrillers... comeback queens) and super talented. Keep an eye on this program, it's on the way up.
