COLUMBUS, Ohio - With a 4-0 win over Purdue Sunday, the No. 5-ranked Ohio State women's tennis team clinched a second consecutive Big Ten regular season title. Ohio State is 25-2 overall and finished Big Ten regular season play 11-0 for the second straight year. The victory over the Boilermakers (6-16, 1-9 B1G) marked the Buckeyes' 32nd consecutive home win and their 23rd straight victory in a conference regular season match.
The Buckeyes dropped just one point in league matches en route to the title, outscoring their opponents 73-1. The squad was 62-1 in singles play and 24-1 in doubles matches. The shutout was the team's eighth in a row and 18th of the season, extending the program record for shutouts in a single campaign.
Ohio State enters next weekend's Big Ten Tournament at Illinois on an 11-match winning streak. The Buckeyes, the defending tournament champion, will be the No. 1 seed. Ohio State and Michigan both ended the regular season 11-0 in B1G play, but the Buckeyes won a nonconference match between the teams Feb. 17 to win the tiebreaker. Ohio State has a first round bye and will open play Friday in the quarterfinals. The semifinals are set for Saturday and the championship will be at noon Sunday, televised live on BTN.
