Ohio State Women's Basketball (2023-24 B1G CHAMPS)

KELSEY MITCHELL NAMED B1G PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR, BUCKS PICKED TO FINISH SECOND IN THE CONFERENCE

Ohio State's Kelsey Mitchell was selected as the Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year by both the media and the conference's 14 coaches, and was also one of just two unanimous All-B1G selections.

Mitchell enters the 2016-17 season as one of the most hyped players in the country, and for good reason. After just two seasons, she is already ninth in Ohio State history in scoring with 1,762 career points. She's well on pace to obliterate the school's scoring record and also set a new Big Ten and NCAA scoring record.

Ohio State was also selected to finish second in the conference by both the media and the coaches, finishing behind only Maryland. No Buckeye other than Mitchell was named to the All-B1G team.

WOMEN'S HOOPS PREVIEW: OHIO STATE WELCOMES FIVE FIVE-STARS AND A MCDONALD'S ALL-AMERICAN

75890_h.jpg,qitok=vYoaX0Wo.pagespeed.ce.x7LZjdfDvr.jpg

He won't admit it, but Ohio State women's basketball head Kevin McGuff may be the best recruiter in Columbus.

Urban Meyer pulls in top recruiting classes year after year, but he doesn't convince too many stud players to leave their blue-blood program to sit out a year and then play for him instead; McGuff does.

This season, McGuff bolstered his already-loaded arsenal with six more weapons: transfers Stephanie Mavunga (North Carolina), Sierra Calhoun (Duke) and Linnae Harper (Kentucky) as well as freshmen Tori McCoy, Jensen Caretti and Kiara Lewis. All are either former McDonald's All-Americans or five-star recruits.

They'll all make an impact for the Buckeyes this season, so we take a look at each one.

TRANSFERS

STEPHANIE MAVUNGA – FORWARD (NORTH CAROLINA)
Mavunga transferred to Ohio State the summer after her North Carolina Tar Heels eliminated the Buckeyes from the NCAA Tournament. In that game, she dominated the Buckeyes in the post, scoring 27 points, pulling down 14 rebounds and blocking five shots. Ohio State lacked anybody to defend her down low, but now they have her.

Coming out of high school, Mavunga was a four-star recruit and a 2013 McDonald's All-American. During her first two years at North Carolina, she set freshman school records in double-digit scoring games as well as double-digit rebounding games and was named to the ACC All-Freshman team in 2013-14 and the All-ACC team in 2014-15.

Quite simply, Mavunga is the perfect fit for the Buckeyes' scheme. McGuff didn't just need size; he needed size that can play uptempo on offense and defense and be effective immediately. Mavunga gives him that.

“The good thing coming from North Carolina, our mantra was 'Heel Fast,' and that’s how we played," Mavunga said. "Coach McGuff also plays fast, so to be able to play in an uptempo program where you get up and down the floor is really fun. There’s not too much of a difference."

Mavunga will likely be the Buckeyes top option at forward on day one and throughout the season.

Ohio State women’s basketball wins big in season opener by crushing Duquesne

Ohio State women’s basketball got the new season started in style, blowing out Duquesne, 89-69

The Ohio State women’s basketball team took care of business in its season opener against Duquesne on Friday afternoon in Columbus. The Buckeyes used their signature relentless full-court defense and dominated the paint to bury the Dukes 89-69.

The new look rotation for head coach Kevin McGuff’s squad was on full display as ten different players saw minutes. Junior All-American Kelsey Mitchell overcame a mediocre shooting performance of 6-for-17 to score 18 points, while North Carolina transfer Stephanie Mavunga added a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Sierra Calhoun and Shayla Cooper were also in double figures for Ohio State in a game in which the team’s size advantage paid dividends. The Buckeyes outrebounded Duquense 55-33

I don't know how much they lost, but the Dukes were a pretty decent team last year, making the NCAA tourney as a 9-seed and blowing out #8 Seton Hall by 21. (They were lucky enough to be in UConn's bracket, so they got destroyed in the 2nd round.)

In order to get some attendance at the Ohio State men's game, the highly ranked women's team will take on a more highly ranked South Carolina team at 6 PM at Value City Arena.
It also will be streamed live on BTN2Go

A little info on the lady Gamecocks

Noting South Carolina
  • South Carolina lost just two games last year and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16.
  • The Gamecocks went undefeated en route to the SEC regular season and tournament titles last year and are picked to repeat again this year.
  • USC is led by national Player of the Year candidate A’ja Wilson who averaged 16.1 points and 8.7 rebounds last year.
  • 6-4 center Alaina Coats also returns to make one of the best front lines in college basketball.
  • South Carolina also features a pair of transfer guards in Allisha Gray (UNC) and Kaela Davis (GT). Gray led North Carolina in scoring in 2014-15 while Davis led the entire ACC in scoring in 2014-15.
  • Gamecock coach Dawn Staley has won nearly 70 percent of her games at USC as she owns a career 360-156 record.
