Game Thread Ohio State vs Wisconsin - 10/26/19, 12:00PM (FOX)

Thanks for participating. Interesting how you think UW gains less than 300 yds, gives up at least 4 sacks and at least 3 turnovers but still score 17 pts. Are you thinking they get a defensive score and the Offense only scores 10 pts?
Thinking they hit two long plays but don't sustain many drives at all.

FOOTBALL: BADGER DEFENSE WILL TEST BUCKEYE OFFENSE LIKE NONE BEFORE

SPORTS-FBC-NORTHWESTERN-WISCONSIN-3-GET-530x353.jpg

Wisconsin’s defense is No. 1 nationally in scoring defense and total defense. It is No.1 in rushing yards and passing yards allowed per game. It is No. 1 in third-down and red zone efficiency.

At least the Badger defense leads only the Big Ten — and not the entire country — in passes defended and fewest 20-plus-yard plays allowed.

No. 3 Ohio State (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) has fallen short of 40 points just once this season, scoring 34 against Michigan State’s No. 22 total defense. No. 13 Wisconsin (6-1, 3-1) will badger the Buckeye attack with its toughest challenge to date.

“This is the No. 1 defense in the country,” Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said. “We consider ourselves to be one of the top offenses in the country. [We’ll] find out where we’re at [Saturday].”

Day credits much of Wisconsin’s defensive success to coordinator Jim Leonhard, pointing to the leverage and drive the Badgers create on that side of the ball with their scheme.

Wisconsin utilizes a rare defensive front where linebackers stand in place of defensive ends to pin runs inside and provide an athletic pass-rushing threat to opposing quarterbacks. Typically only two or three true defensive linemen are on the field, as opposed to the four Ohio State and many other college football teams use.

Three linebackers provide the foundation for Wisconsin’s defense, combining for 34 percent of the team’s tackles, 49 percent of its tackles for loss and 67 percent of its sacks, as each compose the top three in those categories.

FOOTBALL: JONATHAN TAYLOR POSES BIGGEST THREAT OF SEASON FOR OHIO STATE

SPORTS-FBC-GREENSTEIN-COLUMN-GET-530x353.jpg

Jonathan Taylor won back-to-back 100-meter dash state titles at Salem High School in New Jersey, posting a personal record time of 10.49 seconds –– one of the fastest in state history.

What’s even scarier about the best running back Ohio State will face in at least the regular season: Speed isn’t his most notable attribute.

The 2018 Doak Walker Award winner and first team Associated Press All-American has made a habit of ferociously ripping, tearing and stiff-arming his way through the teeth of America’s best defenses to the tune of 5,128 career rushing yards in three seasons with Wisconsin –– already the No. 19 leading rusher in college football history.

And the speed doesn’t hurt either.

“I know this is going to be the biggest challenge of the year,” Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said. “It’s a major challenge for the guys up front, the front seven and the secondary. These guys are big, strong, physical. They’re going to try to move us off the ball. Obviously Taylor is as good as there is in the country.”

After chewing up 1,977 and 2,194 yards of turf in his freshman and sophomore seasons, respectively, the 220-pound back is on another jaw-dropping campaign for the Badgers in 2019.

His 957 yards and 136.7 per game are both No. 3 in the nation, and the two players ahead of him have each received at least 21 more carries on the year.

Taylor’s 19 total touchdowns are not only four more than the next closest player in the country, but they equal the amount of scores hauled in by the entire Ohio State wide receiver corps. His 15 rushing touchdowns are three more than the Buckeyes’ running back room combined, and he’s significantly outpacing himself from two prior seasons in which he had 13 and 16.

If his statistical rap sheet isn’t enough to strike fear in the heart of the Buckeye contingent, Taylor enters Columbus looking to avenge the worst performance of his lauded collegiate tenure, a career-low 41 yards on 2.7 per carry in a Big Ten Championship loss to Ohio State in 2017.

“When we saw him two years ago, in the Big Ten Championship, it was kind of a first- and second-down guy,” redshirt junior linebacker Tuf Borland said. “But now he’s better at his game in all aspects, all the way through third down, blocking, catching the ball out of the backfield –– so he’s a great player.”

Live Updates — Ryan Day Radio Show — Oct. 24

Ryan-Day-radio-show-halftime.jpg

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day will take part in his weekly radio show on Thursday beginning around 12:00 pm. He will be answering questions from hosts Paul Keels and Jim Lachey and previewing this Saturday’s matchup with the Wisconsin Badgers. We will provide updates throughout the hour, so refresh for the latest.

+ There are Buckeye watch parties in Manchester, NH. There are more and more people wearing Buckeye gear around town and around the state. “Maybe we’ll have to start an alumni club in Manchester.”

+ Davon Hamilton is the guy who starts the fight song after every win in the locker room.

+ You can’t just look at a quarterback and know who has the stronger arm. There are too many other things involved other than arm strength. “It’s all about timing and how you create the ball from the ground up and how you get the ball out of your hand.” It’s rare to need to throw the ball 50 or 60 yards during a game.

+ Jonah Jackson has stepped in and done a tremendous job of being himself and being a leader. OSU is a prideful place and the offensive linemen have embraced him. He’s tough and disciplined and like the rest of the team, he’s focused on one game at a time.

+ They were slipping a little bit early on last week, but the field was in great shape.

+ Some teams like having two punt returners back to defend against rugby punts. Other teams do it to provide a blocker against a really good gunner.

+ Nothing you can do about the weather other than prepare for it. Both teams have to deal with the conditions.

+ The more times OSU can get Wisconsin in third and long, the better the game will go.

+ Wisconsin’s defense has a really good third-down package and they’re tough in the red zone. They are the most challenging defense OSU has seen this season. Staying on third and six-or-less is what is key against this Badger defense. They create turnovers in third-and-long as well.

+ The Ohio State defensive tackles will have to have their best game of the year.

+ Wisconsin is a ball-control team and they like to snap it inside of 10 seconds remaining on the play clock. Jonathan Taylor is one of the best backs in the nation. Jack Coan keeps the offense on schedule and is good on third downs. Quintez Cephus is one of the best receivers in the Big Ten.

+ Master Teague is a good change of pace, and the offensive line has done a good job of creating holes. The good thing is Teague is seeing those holes created by the zone blocking. “He’s a home run hitter.”

+ Great to see JK Dobbins coming out of the backfield and catching a touchdown pass. They spent a lot of time on some of those things in the off week.

+ Thayer Munford is having a great week of practice and looks good. Last week was a challenge for Nick Petit-Frere and a learning experience, so it will be good for him moving forward.

+ Dawand Jones is “down to I think 360 right now.” He’s a tremendous athlete. Scored 40 points in a playoff basketball game. Hasn’t played a whole bunch of football, but has tons of potential.

+ Young guys continue to make an impact when they are getting opportunities in the third and fourth quarters.

+ What the kick by Blake Haubeil showed was that nobody was looking at the scoreboard.

+ Ohio State practices returning a “Kick 6,” which they call “Bama” every Thursday.

+ Asked what the longest FG Day would consider attempting, he said 55 yards is about the limits, but it depends on the wind and turf and conditions.

+ Josh Myers does an excellent job up front communicating with the coaches after drives. The coaches get good information in-game from the players, so that helps them make their adjustments.

+ Last week was another good example of preparing for a game with the one-week-at-a-time mentality. There was good energy and they need to continue building on that. They finished the first half well. “So here we go again.”

Two-Minute Drill: Ryan Day ‘Lightning Round’ Updates — Oct. 24

Ohio-State-football-press-conference-Ryan-Day-.jpg

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day spoke with reporters following his radio show on Thursday. He answered a flurry of questions about his team and their upcoming battle with the Wisconsin Badgers. Here are the highlights from the electrifying session.

+ Brian Hartline has a long life ahead of him and wants to be a coach and is putting his heart and soul into it. It’s different going from a player to a coach, but he’s off to a great start.

+ This team prepares every week to play 60 minutes, so they’re doing that again this week. It’s going to be a field position game and it will be tough at times.

+ Coach Mick said the other day, any time you go into a game, you have a one-on-one battle that you have to win, and “our guys are looking hard at that.” “We’re being challenged in all areas.”

+ Any time you can run the ball a bit on third down, you can calm a defense down and keep them from getting too exotic. “But it’s a calculated risk.”

+ If you don’t win up front, you have no shot in this game.

+ OSU’s offense has been spotty on staying on schedule and out of third-and-longs. They’ve been decent at third-and-manageables.

+ They won’t do anything differently with the game plan because of the weather. They might alter the players involved. Unless the weather is completely brutal, the plan goes on. “If it’s just raining out then we have our full arsenal.”

+ Justin Fields and Josh Myers are going a good job of sliding the protection into the right spots and they’re getting better every week.

+ Defending play-action on first and second down is huge in this game. They have a good arsenal of things they do out of that.

+ Chase Young is versatile. He plays the run, plays the pass. Can beat you with speed or power. Some people believe you run at guys like him, but you still have to block him. Each team has had their own plans of attack.

WATCH: Ryan Day’s Final Thoughts Before Ohio State – Wisconsin

I've been thinking about it all week and I've come to the conclusion that if Bucky isnt up 2 touchdowns by the end of the 1st quarter, they're in for a brutally long day. I could see them come out fired up and hot on some plays and catch us with something we haven't seen before. But, we don't have chaos in our defensive coaches this year and we have a staff that is not afraid to switch it up and adapt to what the defense is doing. Remember the last great Wisky back that was supposed to run all over us? I see more of the same on Saturday.

Buckeyes 38-13
