Stop Rate: Wisconsin and Ohio State clash Saturday in a matchup of the nation’s top defenses
By Max Olson Oct 23, 2019
Every defense in college football has the same goal on every drive: Get a stop and get off the field. It’s the most basic measurement of whether a defense is successful. And the successful ones win a lot of games.
We call this simple measure of success stop rate: the percentage of a defense’s drives that end in punts, turnovers or a turnover on downs. This metric can offer a more accurate reflection of a defense’s effectiveness in today’s faster-tempo game.
Last season, Clemson
finished No. 1 in stop rate for the second year in a row, this time by a much wider margin. That stacked, veteran unit led by Brent Venables got stops on 83.6 percent of all drives, which is remarkable given they played 15 games.
This week, we’ve got a showdown of the nation’s No. 1 and No. 2 defenses in stop rate. Despite their stunning last-second loss to Illinois, Wisconsin is still at the top of the standings this week at just under 90 percent. But their lead is slim now, and this Ohio State defense sure looks poised to surpass them.
These are the two best units in the country when it comes to pass defense, not only in yards per game but also yards per attempt. The Badgers and Buckeyes are among the top three nationally in third down defense and red zone defense and two of the four best in yards per rush defense. They rank among the top 10 in sacks and takeaways.
Ohio State is now tied for the national lead in tackles for loss with 66. Their last six opponents have all failed to score more than 10 points. They’ve given up 60 passing yards or fewer in three of their last four outings. As our Bruce Feldman
wrote earlier this month, new DC Jeff Hafley has quickly worked wonders with this freaky talented group.
