Ohio State vs. Virginia, Wednesday, 9:15 p.m., ESPN2

We have to start winning games like this or we won't even be watching the television come Selection Sunday.

? It would have been nice to win. We should have won. We did lots of nice things, and if Lyle tightens up his game, we are just one load of a team...but like Buckguy said, how can you watch that game and even think we are on the border of not making the dance? We exposed the number one defense in the country on the road. We were supposed to lose by double-digits. That is a borderline number two seed we just about beat. I'm guessing there are some commenting on here that actually know very little about basketball. Too bad, this year's team is going to be exciting to follow.

I think it's because the really bad side of this team is still there......yea they almost won, but also the reason they didn't win is because of what we figured was majorly wrong with this team in the first place (careless turnovers and inability to consistently create offense, especially in the clutch)

Yea you could say they still almost won in spite of those things, but unless they start getting better in those areas it's not realistic to expect them to win any big games like this.

I'll say they are better then I thought they were at the start of the year, but the problems are still glaring. Hopefully they can kick the awful turnover bug a good bit by the end of the year.

I'd like to think I know a fair bit about basketball. It is, by far, my favorite sport, particularly college basketball. I have been following Ohio State basketball devoutly since Thad got here. I love Thad. I hope he turns this program around.

My comment was simple. We have to start winning these types of games if we want to make the tourney. It doesn't matter how close we come. We have to win. That is just a plain fact. We beat Kentucky last season and then couldn't beat anyone else that we weren't expected to beat. We went 11-7 in the B1G but missed the Dance. We haven't really beat any T10-level teams or won any extra tough road games for over three seasons now. That is really frustrating.

We have an experienced and somewhat balanced roster now. Thad and his guys have got to put it together this season and start winning some of these types of games. This loss in and of itself shouldn't be that disheartening, we competed well on the road against a good team... but here's the thing, close doesn't count for squat when the committee is looking at wins and losses for a huge field of teams. And the problem is now, with the season UConn is having (that is, bad), we only get one more chance at a quality non-conference win: UCLA. Excuse me if I'm not extremely optimistic that we beat them.

If we walk away from the non-con schedule with two losses and no resume wins, hey, the record's not bad, right... but we still gotta get the resume wins. The committee puts a huge premium on that. And we have really, really, really struggled to get those types of wins the past 3-4 years. AAAANDDDD with the B1G being a bit down, we might have to get to AT LEAST 12-6 in conference to be in the Tournament (we got left out last season at 11-7 and that was with the UK win [but some bad early season losses]). When you look at our conference schedule this season, I don't know, 12-6 feels possible but not exactly probable.

It is crucial that this team starts winning these types of games.

That is a plausible argument, but this team is already way ahead of the game over last year. No UT-Arlington loss at home, no Louisiana Tech loss at home, no twenty-point loss to UConn on the horizon...hopefully no thirty point losses like Indiana and Maryland in conference. I like what I'm seeing from Tate and Thompson...I just don't know if this team has the quit in them that was there last year. We'll see.

Seeing a lot of disappointment here and I get it: they lost. What I see is a team that many fans pissed and moaned about all week taking the #1 team in the computer power ratings right to the wire. Virginia adjusted and eventually won, but the Buckeyes earned a lot of respect last night. Well done to Coach Matta and the team. They can build on this.

Despite the loss, this was the first time in a long time that, despite a bit of boneheaded play in stretches, I've generally enjoyed how they played the game.

My frustrations aside, I think I might owe Matta an apology this year. We'll be looking at a solid team if we can cut the damn TOs.

I agree, I will eat crow if this continues. Ever since my public frustration after the second game, this team really started playing better. And I don't mean they started making baskets...sure, that is great, but the team is playing like a TEAM and I am seeing legitimate effort and desire out there.

I just watched the game and I damn proud of our boys. If they play with that level of effort, I will be proud no matter the results. But to that point, I actually see some real potential on this team. I am sure everyone has to love Potter as much as I do...versatile player that gives great effort and plays with so much passion and has fun with the game...I want to see more of him. I really like Wesson as well. I know they make mistakes but I think the potential is there big time. That is just off the top of my head real quick but there are some guys who have shown they can play. If we get some consistency from Lyle and Loving, plus get a healthy KBD, this can be a really good team. Not a Final 4 team but a team that can cause problems in March, which should be everyone's realistic expectation of this program right now imo.
