Game Thread Ohio State vs UNLV, 09/23/17 @ 12:00 ET (BTN)

Haskins and Saunders showed me something. Though Haskin's also showed me why he's the backup forcing a bad throw that there was no reason to throw and when he was rushed he tended to drop his eyes.
Yeah this game shut me up with thinking our back up maybe a better option. He's not and that's ok he's young..

What is disappointing is we won't see Saunders again but the dude is solid man... renfrow is a good walk on and we have a guy that runs great routes and catches balls. Would like to see what he has

I will say one last thing on this and be done with it. Wilson clearly is working on evolving the offense and working in more wrinkles as we go. This is why I feel much better about him then Beck and Warriner. Under Beck you would have seen the same exact offense every game and it would have worked in 3 of the 4 games cause we were clearly more talented. Meanwhile under Wilson the last 2 weeks you have seen us working on different concepts and wrinkles to add to the offense.
Oh I don't deny it's better... Just not sure what we were trying to accomplish today

Was there anyone you thought showed that they might play better in game than they do in practice? I know the reps at practice are kind of limited for the younger guys. Seemed like a lot of them got a bunch of snaps today.

Although there was some talk about him, CJ Saunders showed a LOT to me today that I think moved him from a practice player to a player that needs actual PT in games. I had always thought maybe Victor is a guy that also may not be a great practice player that could excel in games, but just the one TD catch today doesn't really reinforce that. Berry looked like a pass-catching threat we should use and coaches had talked him up this offseason. Okudah really flashed and he did in the spring game as well. Pryor looked awesome but there were a lot of positive reports on him from summer camp, so not a surprise. Browning is clearly a superb athlete but he looked lost at times, I think he is still learning the defense...not a shocker. It sounds like Werner played as well, not sure how he looked. Keandre Jones showed some nice moments and range today, thought the same on Malik Harrison...both might get some more PT, although they have already played some this year.

But overall, I think there are plenty of young guys the coaches really like but they just need to see more actual game film from to give them more significant PT. I would need to watch the game again to look over some of the other guys, but I am sure this game should provide a great assessment for the staff to do just that.

Thanks for the answer. I had posted during the game that it looked like we called off the dogs before we beat them into complete submission. Pretty sure 70 would have been easy to achieve today. Actually throwing in the subs while UNLV still seemed to have some fight should pay dividends down the road IMO.

Thoughts on the game (totally random order as usual):

1) I don't care if it was UNLV, JT played excellent. Threw the ball extremely well into some pretty tight windows, took some chances without making any dumb plays, and had a few nice touch throws. The touchdown throw to the corner of the endzone on 4th down to McLaurin was a thing of beauty, one of the more difficult throws to make and he put it in the only spot his receiver could have caught that. I will say I am a little concerned on the interactions between him and Haskins (or lack thereof). Maybe I am reading into it to much, but I did not see those two talking the entire game. First touchdown for Haskins and JT looked emotionless. You would think the communication would be there throughout the game and brief camera shots can be deceptive, but to me it looked like those two are at odds. I hope I'm wrong.

2) Love the utilization of Victor on the jump ball, he can be a threat there. Want to see him get more looks.

3) Sheffield is not looking that great...constantly getting caught for PI and just doesn't look comfortable out there. Although he definitely has time and maybe he is just having a couple bad showings, I would really like to see more Okudah/Wade. Okudah I really want to see more of...really aggressive player and he just looks hungry to me (on top of being maybe the purely most talented DB in the room).

4) In my eyes, Fuller is head and shoulders above Smith right now at safety. He looked great out there, very sure tackler and sound coverage. Smith is missing some tackles.

5) Rashod Berry excites me, what a fantastic touchdown. The late fumble is understandable, 4th down and he was almost across the goalline. Also seems to be a very good blocker. You have to think he earned himself some PT today.

6) Haskins made a couple really stupid throws (to be expected of a freshman) but damn can he throw the ball. That first touchdown to Saunders was as pinpoint as you can be. Had great command of the offense, lots of confidence and he just looks like a field general out there. JT is our QB, but Haskins' future here is very bright.

7) CJ Saunders seriously looks like a player...walk on or not, he may have earned some PT. Damn he looks good.

8) Again, Joe Burrow looked really good out there in his short stint. As good as Haskins is, he will have to fend off Burrow...Joe can play.

9) The receiver group as a whole looked great today. Made some huge plays, blocked well and executed. Campbell is a playmaker I see breaking away right now, just have to get him the ball a ton...has made mistakes but always rebounds extremely well, mature player that I love to see him do so well.

10) To state the obvious, the DL is so good it is just not even fair. Bosa in particular looked fantastic today but the depth and talent is just unreal.

11) The freshmen: A lot of guys flashed, so fun to see them get in and play. Browning is superbly athletic, Young is clearly going to be a star, and Pryor looks like he is going to excellent. Already mentioned Okudah but he looked good too. Then on offense, Harris and Grimes caught every ball thrown to them and just imagining throwing those guys out there with Victor in the future is just going to create matchup nightmares for defenses. And its not like those guys are just tall, gimmicky receivers that you can only utilize in the redzone, both guys are versatile.

12) Thought the OL play looked pretty darn good today, first and second string.

13) Special teams looked very good mostly. Great kickoff coverage, big return from Campbell, and I think Chrisman looks fantastic, he is going to be a great punter here. Easy to overlook this aspect of the game but the special teams needs to keep it up and keep improving, we have to have good special teams play.

- Overall I thought we improved and we got some very valuable playing time for our young guys. Definitely some mistakes made by our backups but that will also serve as great experience moving forward. Not a bad job at all and a fun game to watch. Go Bucks!
You're the anti-bukipower..

No problem. I definitely think that was the case, no reason to get up by 70 before we give the 4th quarter to our backups...give them somewhat meaningful playing time and don't risk getting our starters injured. I think today helped give the staff an idea of what guys they need to give some more PT to, whether they showed up in practice beforehand or not.

You are fine man haha. Urban Meyer isn't going to come in tomorrow morning in the film room and fart rainbows and butterflies about this game. But I feel like he will come out of it with the same general assessment he had in his immediate post-game interview...mostly encouraging with some things that were upsetting, caused by youth and inexperience. I just see that we did progress today and accomplish a number of things that the score/in-game frustrations would not reflect.

I'm surprised UFM was upset with the pass defense .. to me that just screams "I am upset with Kendall Sheffield"... they had 88 yards passing so they literally didn't have a throwing game.

We had just a buffet of PI calls though which just cannot happen. I literally think peoples game plans on defense on third down is throw it on a fade toward Sheffield. They know they'll either catch it or he will grab them. I feel bad for him because he's clearly struggling but there's no way Okudah is worse.

Why did Jeffrey Okudah change his number btw?

Ok i understand UFM... Sheffield mostly and the secondary kept how many drives going with penalties? Just can't do that

It's about getting ready for the future for me. We ain't winning a NC under Barrett. Hell we probably ain't winning the B1G with him. This isn't like VaTech where you had an extremely young team facing a weird exotic look. This is a mostly veteran team. They are what they are at this point. Get ready for the future. Let Haskins take his lumps so that we can make a run in '18. That's my take anyway.

I kind of agree... I'd like to see burrow play too because while Haskins looks strong throwing I could help but feel off watching him too.

I was watching and then it dawned on me... they don't even have to pay attention to Haskins running the ball.

I heard it in bucknuts morning 5 this week but this next off season will be so interesting because God damn of Tate doesn't interest me. He's mobile, good arm, and more importantly he refuses to lose. He does not lose and there's something to be said for that

After Oklahoma we needed to see improvement in the passing game.

JT needed to be more accurate. Check. Regardless of the opponent, he has been very efficient and improving on his ball placement. Positive direction. Same for the backups.

We needed to see the WRs make plays and stop dropping balls. Check. Much fewer mistakes and guys are getting after it in their routes and after the catch. Keep this momentum going.

DB's needed to play their assignments. Check. Other than the penalties they've made numerous plays albeit Army didnt give many options. First teamers today were quite good in my opinion and got turnovers which is why last years team did so well.

LBs has to improve. Check. Not needed as much in coverage and except for the backups guys have been very good. Tuf is the stuff.

Special teams look pretty special. They are still a work in progress but they are progressing. BiG Championship and Playoff arent next week. Just keep getting better.

I hear all this but how many times did we say this last year? Remember that stretch when we dropped 62 back-to-back weeks after struggling on offense the past couple of weeks? We've seen this offense look like crap, light up cupcakes or bad defenses a couple of weeks later, then get stoned again. I'm just not falling for it this time. Oklahoma was the last time I give this team the benefit of the doubt. If we smoke Penn State I'll honestly start to believe.
