Opportunity to Make Statement Against TCU Not Lost on Dwayne Haskins

Dwayne-Haskins-1170x780.jpg

Ohio State is second in the nation in scoring, No. 12 in the nation in rushing, No. 16 in passing, and second in total offense.

They have won their two games by an average score of 64.5 to 17.

The Buckeyes are one of three offenses (Oklahoma State, Mississippi State) to be in the Top 20 in both passing and rushing.

In other words, they have been unstoppable.

Saturday night, however, they’ll finally be playing a defense capable of putting up a fight.

Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins knows that what the OSU offense has done to this point doesn’t mean much, which is why there is so much emphasis on TCU. This is an opportunity for the Buckeyes to make a statement that everyone will notice.

“I definitely think we take that very seriously,” Haskins said this week. “Every day in practice Isaiah Prince and Terry [McLaurin] and Parris [Campbell] and Johnnie [Dixon] emphasize how big this game is and how it’s really our first key game of the season. We have a lot of key games in order to go do what we want to do for the national championship this year and this is only one of them.”

There have been a number of reasons why the Ohio State offense has been so effective, and chief among them is the high-speed tempo with which the Buckeyes are snapping the ball.

“It helps a lot just getting the ball set and making sure the defense can’t get what they need to do on the field,” Haskins said. “And just rolling, rolling, rolling, rolling, rolling every play. I feel like it’s to our advantage.”

As long as the Buckeyes are running tempo, a defense cannot really substitute. They can try, but they may end up playing nine on 11. While it puts the defense in a very tough position, it also requires a lot of the quarterback who is running the offense.

“Just making quick decisions,” Haskins said of his focus when running tempo. “It’s a lot a lot of trust from the coach for allowing us to do that. There’s a lot that goes into running tempo. We’re doing a great job with how we do periods of that in practice. We’re executing and getting better at it every day.”

Ohio State-TCU: OSU has never lost in state of Texas, Big 12 has never won in Jerry World

att-stadium.jpg

There’s certainly a confluence of historical trends that are set to collide in Arlington Saturday night for a matchup that will have a sizable impact on the playoff chase.

Ohio State and TCU will square off a few hours from now in a neutral-site game — based on the myriad Scarlet & Grey denizens expected to be in attendance it might not be so neutral at kickoff — that’s easily one of the biggest matchups of Week 3. So big, in fact, that ESPN’s traveling roadshow, College GameDay, is originating from TCU’s campus even as the game will be played less than 20 miles away in Arlington.

The highly-anticipated tilt will be played at AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. Opened in 2009, Jerry World has played host to a total of 13 college football games involving the Big 12; as our colleague Zach Barnett noted over at FootballScoop.com, the conference sports an 0-13 mark in those contests. Included in that all-time doughnut is TCU’s 2013 loss to LSU in Jerry’s Ode To Excess.

Conversely, Ohio State is 2-0 in AT&T Stadium — a win over Oregon in the College Football Playoff title game to stake its claim to the 2014 national championship as well as a win over USC in the 2017 Cotton Bowl.

All told, OSU is 6-0 all-time in games played in the state of Texas. Included in that are a pair of wins in Dallas, including the 1987 Cotton Bowl; one in San Antonio over Oklahoma State in the 2004 Alamo Bowl; and another in Austin over Texas in 2006.

That is amazing!

HERE WE GO BUCKEYES, HERE WE GO!!!

SORRY FROGS BUT YOU'RE GOING TO BE SOUP AT THE STROKE OF MIDNIGHT! THESE BUCKEYES ARE FOR REAL AND THE STATEMENT IS GOING TO BE MADE TONIGHT AT JERRY WORLD.

My original prediction was 42-20, I'm sticking close to that but I think Tate gets another one tonight as well, 49-20 Buckeyes and the first place votes start piling in on Monday. Woooooooo
