Game Thread Ohio State vs TCU (Arlington, TX) - 09/15/18, 8:00PM (ABC)

I'm still curious about that targeting call. I was always under the impression that you gained the penalty yardage regardless if the actual targeting was overturned or not?

Re: The NCAA gave replay officials the authority to uphold or overturn a targeting call before last season (i.e. 2016).
Currently, a targeting foul means a 15-yard penalty and an automatic ejection from the game, if it’s upheld as a penalty after video review. If a targeting foul is overturned, there’s no penalty.

Lol...I love seeing Brutus lined up arm-in-arm with the players singing Carmen Ohio. Totally normal.

College football is the greatest sport in the world.

Getting to watch the second half this morning. Gotta admit this was a high octane game. A lot of credit to TCU for their execution outside of the really few mistakes which tOSU took advantage of.

Defense will give up explosive plays. That’s just going to be how it is, they just have to find a way to limit them. They will also make explosive plays and that was a huge benefit when the offense wasn’t in rhythm.

It was great to see Dobbins having some very good runs and starting to find his exciting form from last year. It was clear he had the step over Webber until late and kudos to the coaches for giving him the chance to keep going in his home state.

Honestly, this is a great win for the team. TCU came to play and I think it very easily could have gone the other way early on, tOSU just didn’t make the mistakes. Credit to the offense for adjusting enough to score and the screen call to Campbell was a great response to the speed TCU was coming with. DHJR just scores. I like that. Congratulations Coach Day on a big win and aceing the 3-game trial. Excited to see how the team can build off this one.

OHIO STATE OVERCOMES ITS FIRST ON-FIELD ADVERSITY OF THE SEASON IN 40-28 WIN VS. TCU

96529_h.jpg

Ohio State’s third game of the season against TCU at AT&T Stadium was fully expected to be a tougher challenge than its 77-31 win over Oregon State and 52-3 win over Rutgers.

Yet it perhaps proved to be an even tougher challenge than most people expected.

While the Buckeyes ultimately earned a 40-28 win over the Horned Frogs on Saturday night, it took a second-half comeback after struggles on both sides of the ball for them to ultimately prevail and improve to 3-0.

Ohio State didn’t score an offensive touchdown for the first 38 minutes of Saturday’s game. The defense gave up four touchdowns in the first three quarters of the game. Until a stretch in the third quarter where the Buckeyes scored 20 points in four minutes and one second on a 63-yard catch-and-run touchdown by Parris Campbell, a 28-yard interception return touchdown by Dre’Mont Jones and a 24-yard touchdown pass from Dwayne Haskins to K.J. Hill, the Buckeyes trailed 21-13 in the game – and appeared to be in serious jeopardy of losing their marquee non-conference game against a Big 12 opponent for the second year in a row.

Ultimately, though, the Buckeyes prevailed, and now, they have their first big-game win under their belt and a game that should serve as a valuable learning experience for the rest of the season to come.

“We got punched in the mouth,” Haskins said after the game. “You got to remember it’s a fight. You’re going to get punched. So you got to be able to rebound, and we did that second half.”

Even with a defensive touchdown in the first quarter scored when Davon Hamilton recovered a Shawn Robinson fumble forced by Nick Bosa in the end zone, Ohio State trailed 14-13 at halftime after failing to score a single touchdown on any of its six first-half offensive possessions, only coming away with six first-half points created by the offense – two field goals by Sean Nuernberger, who missed a third attempt.

The defense, of course, also gave up two touchdowns – including a 93-yard run to TCU’s Darius Anderson, the longest play from scrimmage allowed by Ohio State’s defense in school history.

Yet even though they were trailing at halftime after never trailing in their first two games of the year, the Buckeyes said they felt confident at the break that they would come back and win the game.

“We all looked each other in the eye, and said, ‘Look, this game’s not over. We’re only down by a point,’” Jones said. “And that’s the worst half of football we’ve probably played this season. We have so much room to grow, we knew we can come out with a W, because we trust in each other and we trust in our unit and we trust in our acting head coach that he can lead us to the victory.”

Two-Minute Drill: Postgame Updates from Ohio State’s Win Over TCU

The No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes answered plenty of questions in Saturday night’s 40-28 win over No. 15 TCU, but they didn’t answer all of them. The OSU offense and defense both had their struggles in the first half, but both sides of the ball bounced back in the second half. Following the win, acting head coach Ryan Day and several members of the team spoke with the media. Here are the highlights.

Ryan Day
+ Asked about no longer being the head coach at Ohio State, Day said he hadn’t thought about it yet. He has been thinking more about how the team responded to adversity.

+ The momentum shift in the game was those three quick touchdowns, with the Dre’Mont Jones touchdown being the most important because it came on defense and took a possession away from TCU.

+ “Just so excited to get Coach back next week.”

+ The culture of the program, along with the players and coaches allowed Day to hand the team over to Meyer with a 3-0 record.

+ It was amazing to see so many Ohio State fans. (The crowd was around 70-30 Buckeye fans.)

+ On Dwayne Haskins, “This was a test to see where he was at. He passed.”

+ Day did not have an update on Nick Bosa.

+ There are so many playmakers on this team and it’s a testament to great recruiting. And it also doesn’t happen overnight.

+ Austin Mack is usually much more reliable, but Day told the team that this was going to be a fight and you can’t flinch when you get hit. “We believe in our guys.”

+ This game gave the team a precedent for moving forward.

+ Kevin Wilson mentioned to Day during the game that the QB run would be open for Haskins at some point and they called it in the red zone and Haskins took it in for six. That was the only read on the day for Haskins. Everything else was hand-offs.

+ K.J. Hill brings reliability and he is clutch.

+ On handing the keys back over to Urban Meyer with a 3-0 record: “I do feel a little bit of relief now.”

+ Day said he will never forget what Greg Schiano has done for him over these last two months.

+ Day couldn’t be happier for the way the defense responded in the second half.

how is that seriously even possible?

Too bad that Schiano to Tennessee thing didn’t work out

It's not Schiano. It's Bill freaking Davis.

He's the same nepotism hire as Zach Smith.

Fuck that guy. Fire his ass. He should never have been hired in the first place. He's cancer and poison. Overrated dude who got hired because of roots and connections. He was worthless in the NFL, and he's worthless at Ohio State.

Can he evaluate talent? Yes. Can he coach that talent? FUCK NO.
