Game Thread Ohio State vs Oklahoma, 09/09/17 @ 7:30 ET (ABC)

Okay, but why did Tom Herman hire away Tim Beck from your staff? He was not fired from OSU, no?
He was absolutely fired, just not publicly, and Urban has typically found landing pads for his demotions. Same with Ed Warinner.

After the 2014 NC run, OSU lost OC Herman and RB coach Drayton. Their OL coach (Ed Warinner) was an absolute witch at developing OL, so they could not afford to lose him too (and you may recall that staff turnover crushed his later UF squads). Trying to avoid this, he promoted Ed to OC and teamed him up with his former running mate at Kansas, Tim Beck, who put up huge numbers in 2007. (which speaks slightly to the difference in conference defenses)

They were defending champs with the world's best RB, a stud NFL WR named Michael Thomas and talent across the board (Braxton Miller was one of the last options in the passing game, that speaks to the depth) and a flamethrowing monster QB in Jones (with a top-5 heisman finalist as the backup). The result was something about like Florida churns out offensively. The QBs were constantly looking over their shoulders, the playcalling was disjointed, the scheme took a huge step back. It didn't help that there were 3 OCs (Urban is the real OC, with Ed wrongly promoted above his paygrade and Beck not helping matters) and they were doing this with two QBs with big flaws.

Tim is a wicked recruiter, and Herman is an offensive savant with strong QB whispering skills. I suspect Beck will be much better away from the 3 ring circus that osu had for the last two years, but his primary purpose is to lock down the destroyed fence around Texas. Osu is coming back for Cook after last year's in state heist (namely 5-stars Okudah, Sheffield and high 4-star Dobbins with a narrow miss on Marvin Jones).

Oh, I'm not trying to discredit OU. Just that I didn't see the support offered as being much support at all. I have to confess, I'm not all that sold that Big XII offenses are that stellar ... in my IMO it's more that the Big XII forgot how to play defense. That's just an opinion, true, but I've seen teams from the Big XII run into an actual good defense and they lose. I do think OU probably has the best D in the Big XII, although I think Tommy H will have some pretty good ones in the coming years too (assuming he recruits as I anticipate).. but... in my opinion, having the best D in a conference of [Mark May]ty Ds isn't much to hang one's hat on.

Hmmm.... now that I read what I just wrote... maybe I AM trying to discredit OU.. :slappy:

I feel you, and many years ago I would have said something similar.

But for some reason, ever since 2007 (my memory is unusually hazy about this season), I have been strangely averse to getting too confident about any game.

Well let's look at Barrett's pass efficiency rating compared to every Big XII quarterback in 2016. Barrett ranked 55th with a 135.3 rating.

Kenny Hill, TCU - 68th, 129.2
Shane Buechele, Texas - 51st, 136.0
Jesse Ertz, Kansas State - 82nd, 121.6
Patrick Mahomes, Texas Tech - 12th, 157.0
Carter Stanley, Kansas - 100th, 116.3
Jacob Park, ISU - 46th, 138.5
Zach Smith, Baylor - 42nd, 139.3
Skyler Howard, WVU - 28th, 146.6
Mason Rudolph, Okie St. - 10th, 158.9
Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma - 1st, 196.4

On average, every Big XII quarterback had a 143.98 rating and ranked 44th. Barrett's pass efficiency rating was below average compared to the average Big XII quarterback in 2016. In Kevin Wilson's offense this year, he would probably be somewhere between the Paul Thompson and Landry Jones level. Meaning he has a pretty good arm and can put up decent numbers, but he may fold under pressure when facing defenses who specialize in zone coverages and blitzes.

Sure, that's exactly what those numbers mean, go ahead and blitz J.T. Barrett.

Same. I'd like to clarify I'm not guaranteeing a tOSU victory. Nothing in cfb is guaranteed. But on paper, we have a lot more going for us than OU. I certainly wouldn't be cocky if I were an OU fan

To me, that supports the belief that he was overthinking things on the field instead of trusting himself. Paralysis by analysis. When he had no choice but to get rid of it quickly, he did well. I think that will be Wilson's biggest impact: getting JT into a rhythm instead of having him try to be Peyton Manning.

I guess it's easy to put those kinds of numbers up vs. teams like Rutgers, Maryland, and freaking Bowling Green. Those are some really good "blitzing" teams alright.

Oh and btw, according to Pro Football Focus, Baker Mayfield had the highest passer rating under pressure.

Well, there's a good chance that Passer rating will be put to the test considering what OSU will be sending at him.

Which is one the challenging defense that Oklahoma faces?

Besides the obvious answer, of coursre.

Well last year Ohio State, Houston and Auburn were the only top 30 defenses we faced. In terms of Big XII defenses, Kansas State and a Todd Orlando-coordinated Texas defense might be the best defenses will face, along with the Buckeyes from out-of-conference of course.

an Oklahoma fan is talking [Mark May] about the quality of defenses a B1G team faces.

Summertime man

Notre Dame and tsun are convincing themselves of the return to glory, all 9 Miami fans are online and talking National Championship, MAC fans will talk themselves into believing they are going to upset us, Penn Sate fans will pretty much be the same way they are all the time and now we have a B12 fan one year removed from, another, prime time ass beating talking about defense.
