Game Thread Ohio State vs Michigan State, 11/11/17 @ 12:00 ET (FOX)

I refuse to believe the team that showed up in Iowa City - whoever those guys were - is the same team we'll see this weekend. I have nothing but respect for Dantonio and what he's done with that program, but I feel pretty good about this game.

BTW - the game is on FOX; is Gus Johnson calling it by chance?

Not sure if it's Gus or not, but I will say, the ESPN crew last weekend was bad. Not just saying that. Those guys had no idea what was going on during the replay, etc..
As somebody who used to not be able to stand Gus' schtick.....I welcome him with open arms after last week. Griese's just a fucking moron. The other guy was a typical ESPNer who really wants to see an upset happen. I understand why that's more exciting for an announcer, but holy shit is it frustrating for the losing team's fans.

Gus has gotten much better, and Klatt is awesome. Give me that crew every week over the shit ESPN throws out there.

LOL. Touché. I’ll chill now, just had to vent some frustration for all the sad sacks out there. Any time the Bucks get smacked you’d think they were looking at a 3-6 season.

I am always a bit baffled by how well MSU does at times. I can almost call the plays all game long.

The Offense is very standard. The Defense is generally pretty basic and straight forward.

They completely rely on execution, toughness, and not making mistakes. Their whole game plan is generally very straight forward and basic. Most MSU losses evolve around one of these themes: Other team much more talented, MSU team made too many mistakes. But usually MSU does not make errors in execution and scheme. What MSU does not rely on is being more talented or out-athleting the other team.

Last season the team lost all focus and did not understand the key was execution and toughness.

I think that is why MSU has had so much success against OSU (relative to the rest of the B10). OSU relies on having better athletes. And when faced against a team that relies on execution it can become frustrating.

This I think is the main difference in Tressel vs Meyer teams. Tressel wanted to control the whole game and out execute you. Urban wants to just run over you with his athletes. If you ever wanted to see what it would look like if Tressel coached and against Meyer these games are a good example. The main difference is that Tressel's teams had better overall talent than these MSU teams. But the formula is similar. Execution verses Athletes is what is at odds.

When Urban gets his teams to execute they are unstoppable. But they do not always seem to be that interested, as all of you can confirm after watching them week in and week out.

That, sir, is what we refer to as Tresselball. And its not at all surprising that MSU has adopted that philosophy, since both Dantonio and Bollman were coordinators under Tressel during his tenure at tOSU.

Granted, there's a lot that went into that, but that's what I remember when Tressel ball met Meyer ball (along with In n Out Burger).

I mean, best of 10, I would honestly probably take the Sweatervest.

If Troy and the OL didn't party for 5 straight weeks and gain 10 lbs apiece, that '07 game would have gone a lot differently IMO.

And also, that '02 Miami team (IMO) is the single best team that Ohio State has faced since I started watching.

I'm not sure why tressel is being defined by his best performances, as well as regarded as a great game manager when in reality he drove us nuts for 90% of the season. Those offenses were usually far harder to stomach than the more inconsistent ones under urban.

Meanwhile Urban's three natties are being wrongly overshadowed by some recent struggles, as though tressel didn't have a lengthy ugly stretch of his own

07 Florida
07 Illinois
07 lsu
08 usc
08 psu
09 Texas
09 usc
09 purdue

And after finally turning it around against Oregon and setting up for a title run

10 uw

Followed by disbanding the players, regime and sending Ohio recruits fleeing to Michigan. That could have been disastrous if a hall of fame coach was not waiting nearby.

I think the last 3 years have made the comparison more interesting, but let's not romanticize only one side .
