Ohio State vs. Marshall, 2004

I'm not trying to stir the pot, but it IS usually pretty damn obvious when we're going to run the ball. When we allow the defense to put 7, 8, or even 9 in the box, we will have problems running. The most successful play we had was the quick throw to Ross out in te flat. We let them load the middle of the field and just went around. Either make some effort to spread them out, or don't pigheadedly run into the teeth of the entire D.

Maybe it's just frustration on my part, but it looks like the team is trying too hard to assert its authority using brute strentgh, rather than a more diversified running game. You don't have to run it straight up the gut to have an effective running game. Everyone has seen 3 years of us futilely attempting to run up the middle. I think that defensive adjustment has been universally accepted. Try something else, maybe?

Again, welcome to new QB 101. A lot of that comes down to Zwick making the right call at the line and getting us out of a bad play. It will come, all the pieces are there, just a matter of waiting for the light to come on all the way.

My seats were originally in 28C, but I was up at 3:00 am Sat. and went to the team website and got 2 tickets in 21C on the Fifty, row 14. It was really nice when it was shady there all day and my other seats were baked in the sun all afternoon.

Nice pics, too.

Yes the Lb's do have flats, and you just also said my answer when you said they couldn't get there to disrupt the flats in time. Because of the Nickle Formation the linebackers are TOO FAR inside in that case they don't get there in time to disrupt the play in the backfield. You're going into the responsibilities of a defense in a nickle, and I know this what i'm trying to get an opinion on is what do you think of the bump to either A) make the reciever/back go back up a couple yards to avoid contact B) Having our Db's closer to make a play closer to the line of scrimmage. You can play a cover 3 in the Nickle, but you'll get burnt deep against a better pass protecting O-Line. Also I thought our Defensive line got NO pressure so those short hook and slant routes on 3rd and 8 were wide open if you watch the tape. That also can be linked to our Db's playing so far off the ball. I know we don't want to give up the big play and all but man we got the speed. If you read on O-Zone you'll see that when that dude was writing up on how the game went when he was there he quoted on marshall "Why would you bump when you don't have the speed". Well that also proves the po int that if you have the speed why not take the chance? I agree that everyone that is posting knows what the hell they're talking about and we need to get away from the responsibilities because obviously all of us know that. I'm simply asking what about Bump Coverage and what do you think of the 3-4 for short screen passes? It'd be the same cover 2 with it so it wouldn't be any different with the Db's just with bigger bodies on the outside.

How can you expect our defense to shut them down everytime when they spend almost the whole game on the field? If we don't run the ball more effectively and keep turning the ball over the defense is going to get tired at the end of the game, especially in the warm weather. I'd like to see a more balanced offensive attack. I still feel this defense is one of the best in Ohio State history. This was Marshall's game of the season, they won the turnover battle by FOUR, and still couldn't find a way to win. What a great win for a young Ohio State team. A win like this does a lot for a team...a lot more than a blowout does, especially when the team is young. I'm looking forward to N.C. State. I think the Buckeyes experience, yes experience, will be the deciding factor. N.C. State hasn't played a 1-A team yet this year.

I just watched most of the game again. The defense really did do a pretty good job (minus several missed tackles and penalties...). they gave up one really bad drive, where Marshall ran all over us which left a lasting impression on all of us i think. I think the big difference obviously is the d-line. the LBs didnt play well that drive either. It seemed like in the past, they had an uncanny awareness of where the ball was. As soon as the RB came near them, they got off the block and made the tackle. Several times in this game, our defensive players almost ignored the ball carrier until they were several yards by them. Hopefully this can will get better with more experience.

Balanced Defense?

I was looking at the box scores of the last two games. I was impressed at the defensive balance we have. we are alot better at pass defense but not as good at run defense. Our turnovers have hurt us by giving teams alot more offensive series per game. The numbers don't look that bad if you really take a good look at them.

Our fans are pathetic!!!! I'm sorry but we are wayyyyyy too pessimistic. Can we get beat? Sure. Can we win? Sure. Do I know? No. Our defense is different than last years. How many big plays did we give up in the last two games? A few over 20 yards.

Our young defense was out on the field almost 10 more minutes than theirs. They had almost 20!!!!!!!! more offensive plays more than we did. Alot of their yardage was due to turnovers!!!!!

Every Buckeye fan should look at the box score. We had 100 more yards on almost 20 less plays.

If we rectify the turnovers we are gonna be one hell of a team!!!!

We are in deep trouble next week if our run defense doesnt get any better. Marshall's running back had a pretty good game against us. TA Mclendon looks very scary right now....IMHO.

TA McLendon has a bad hammy and didn't play in NCSU opener. I dont care if he's 100% or not we are not going to give up 150+ yds rushing two weeks in a row. Just won't happen. The NCSU QB does not demand the same level of respect that Stan Hill does.

The one drive everyone is freaking out about was just a phenominal coaching adjustment by MU. They went to the Wisconsin zone blocking scheme and the RB was doing his best Anthony Davis impersonation and cutting back for big yardage.

This was the one and only time they did it and you could just tell they had been saving it up for us. That is hard as hell to get ready for in a weeks preparation much less as a mid-game adjustment. BTW the net result was 0 points.

The TO's are the key to everything folks, the defense was on the field the entire second half after three consecutive OSU turnovers. They have given up exactly 7 points to opposing offenses straight up, the other 20 have come directly from TOs wich have given opponents an average start of the OSU 30 yd line!!

Eliminate the TO's and improve slightly in all phases of the punting game and we will be fine. We are very close to playing a complete game and when we do its going to be sweet. I just hope it happens on 9/18.
