PREVIEW: INDIANA AT NO. 2 OHIO STATE

As someone Urban Meyer said he respected immensely as an offensive mind—"I think that coach is terrific"—Kevin Wilson delivered perhaps the most profound statement when asked how his Indiana offense plans to attack rugged Ohio State.

“[We've] gotta cross the line with the G, which is going to be hard to do,” Wilson said Tuesday on the Big Ten teleconference.

INDIANA HOOSIERS
3-1, 1-0 B1G
ROSTER / SCHEDULE

OHIO STADIUM
COLUMBUS, OHIO

Extremely simplistic yet deep, mainly for the fact the team his 3-1 Hoosiers face on Saturday is defending at an abnormally efficient rate through the first third of the 2016 season. The Buckeyes have nine interceptions, four of which they returned for a touchdown in route to a 4-0 start and No. 2 national ranking. Luke Fickell's unit scored 24 points in four games and allowed just 23 in victories over Bowling Green, Tulsa, Oklahoma and Rutgers.

“If their offense wouldn't have played, I think they'd still be undefeated because I think their defense has outscored their offense,” Wilson said.

Such is life for the sixth-year head coach less than a week removed from the biggest win in his tenure. The Hoosiers topped Michigan State in overtime 24-21 last week in Bloomington, a victory that got Ohio State's attention. Now, he attempts to secure a win that would shock the college football world.

“I think they're a very good scheme and the last four years, the level of quality of player just continues to get better and better,” Urban Meyer said on Wednesday after practice. “I think they got an excellent coaching staff and you can see some really positive, really good things on videotape.”

The Buckeyes are a different animal than the Spartans, however. Though Mark Dantonio's club beat Meyer in Columbus a year ago, the Buckeyes are fast, deep and lead the nation in a host of statistical categories on both sides of the ball. The competition outside of a trip to Oklahoma has not been great but Wilson doesn't care. He knows what his improved Hoosiers team faces when it heads east for Columbus.

“It's a tremendous football team and we got our hands full,” Wilson said.

INDIANA BREAKDOWN
Long been considered a team that can score with anybody but never with the ability to stop them with any sort of consistency, the Hoosiers look to notch a program-changing victory. The win against Michigan State is a step in the right direction, though anyone who watched that contest can see it could have gone either way and the Spartans are certainly not the team that won the Big Ten a year ago.

What We're Looking For When the Hoosier Come to Columbus

SamuelJuke.jpg

We’re now in week six of the college football season and we’ve learned a good amount about the 2016 Ohio State football team.

What we know: This is still a run-first offense that can throw the ball well enough to keep teams from loading up the box. There are also a lot of weapons outside of J.T. Barrett, Curtis Samuel and Mike Weber, but they may not shine each week.

Defensively, this team is talented. The youth and inexperience of this group hasn’t mattered because of the skill and hunger of these players and the development will continue.

What we’re looking for this week has more to do with the opponent, Indiana, than it does with the Buckeyes. The Hoosiers will test OSU on both sides of the ball and that’s something we’re still waiting to see after Oklahoma failed to do so three weeks ago.

A four-quarter game

Urban Meyer likes to keep his starters in longer than most coaches would in a blowout game, but the stars for the Scarlet and Gray haven’t seen much fourth-quarter play so far this year.

While fans certainly would like to see every game over by halftime because it means Ohio State is dominating, that’s not realistic. We’d like to see what it looks like when the Buckeyes are challenged and have to close out a game, or even come from behind.

IU has been able to create those types of games in this matchup over the last two years and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Cream and Crimson did it again on Saturday. While OSU is heavily favored and should win the game, maybe they need a touchdown in the final few minutes to seal the deal or have to get a few first downs late to run out the clock.

A pass-heavy game

The Hoosiers have a good offense and might score more than anyone else has against the Silver Bullets. If this is the case, it could become a bit of a back-and-forth affair. We’d enjoy watching J.T. Barrett have to make some plays as opposed to relying on the run game and throwing touchdowns when Ohio State gets into the red zone.

With how good the Buckeyes are rushing the ball – third nationally – Indiana will likely try to take that phase of the game away. The Hoosiers have a good run defense, allowing just 139.5 yards per game, so they might have some success (although the Sooners and their 39th-ranked rush defense still conceded nearly 300 yards on the ground to OSU).

If this is successful, and that’s a big if, Barrett will have to go to the air for success. After throwing the ball 31 times for 349 yards in the season opener against Bowling Green, Barrett has not been asked to do much in the passing game. We’d like to see a contest where he is and how he handles it in the 2016 offense.

Five for Friday: What You'll Be Saying After the Indiana Game

Five4Friday.jpg

If you listen to Urban Meyer, this Indiana football team might be the best squad Ohio State has faced since Alabama in 2014. It's certainly the best team the Buckeyes have faced this year, it would seem. Though I bet he would take Oklahoma if the Sooners and the Hoosiers were to meet on any kind of football field.

Given the ferocity of this series since Meyer's arrival, however, you can understand his trepidation as it concerns the Indiana football team. There will no doubt be some hijinks in this game, and possibly even some shenanigans. Because of that, you will no doubt be saying quite a bit about this one. Here are five such things that you can plan on saying after all of the festivities are over.

1. "Well, they were bound to give up some touchdowns at some point."

You can only not allow touchdowns to your opponents for so long before the law of averages knocks on your door and asks to speak with the man or woman of the house. The Buckeye defense has only given up two touchdowns all season long, and both came in the Oklahoma game.

Indiana is only averaging 29 points per game, and that's with just one B1G game played so far, so they haven't been falsely padding their scoring stats against their non-conference opponents like they normally do. But I still see them scoring a couple of touchdowns against the OSU defense in this one. The second one could be late.

So yeah, after Indiana's two touchdowns in this one, you'll be leaving the game being reasonable about what you saw. Meanwhile, the person next to you will be wondering if Urban Meyer is ever going to do something about Luke Fickell.

2. "It's probably time to start talking about Curtis Samuel and the Heisman."

16-10-01-FB-0324-DH.jpg

Curtis Samuel continues to stay on pace for 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving, and since no college football player has ever done that before you would think that would be worthy of some kind of statue.

Even though Indiana has some athletic safeties and linebackers, none of them should be able to stay with Samuel in the passing game on Saturday. The Hoosiers don't put too much pressure on quarterbacks, which will allow the Ohio State offense to find routes that best serve those mismatches.

Samuel doesn't yet have a 100-yard rushing day this season but maybe it's time for that to happen. Or maybe it's time to have both 100 yards rushing and receiving. Percy Harvin did it once at Florida. In the last 20 years it has been done 50 times. Of course, most of those came because the offenses didn't have anybody else they could turn to.

Samuel could have had a couple of those games by now if the contests had been closer as well. Regardless, expect Samuel to be very good in this game, and expect to be talking about his Heisman chances afterward.

While I think the Hoosiers will give us a much better game than most on this site think, I seriously doubt it'll be this close.

Indiana took almost three full quarters to even score their first points of the game against Sparty--at home--last week. Oklahoma scored 17 offensive points against us, at their place, so I'd say it's not too likely that Indiana will be able to score more than that in The Shoe. While Indiana did have 437 yards of offense against Sparty (including the OT), 281yards came through the air and I just don't see any team throwing for almost 300 against us at home.

What is it about the Rivals forums? I'll admit that I don't have much experience, nation-wide. But of the three I know of, two of them are gold. Michigan's is OK, and of course BWI is the stuff of legends. But I think Indiana's may top BWI - this week, at least. It's almost as good as Flat Earthers. I almost get the feeling that these guys actually believe they will win.

Yep...seen them [OSU] this year and over 40 years before that. Seen then live and on TV...seen huge talent disparity mean little as few team are as notorious over the years for playing down to the level of their competition. OSU is more used to being annointed the winner than working hard for it. They are perfectly capable of laying an egg...huge talent or not. They also usually have big ego problems too. Im not impressed with Meyers either, not with the amount of talent hes already had and how little hes done with it.

Mostly likely we will not win this game...B10 officals always help OSU, particularily at home. But they are beatable...they have fragile confidence. Punch them in the mouth and they stagger. Glass jaw...

God I hate OSU and its foul mouthed fans...

Summary:

1. Ohio State is soft
2. Ohio State has "big ego" problems
3. Urban "Meyers" is not a good coach
4. "Meyers" has done very little with the team's talent
5. Big Ten officials throw games in favor of Ohio State

Any of this sound familiar?

That's not entirely fair.

How do you know this guy didn't fall into a coma after the 1990 game and just come out of it?

Yeah, 54-4 overall record, national title, B1G title, four straight division titles, all-time record 30-game conference win streak, two 20-game win streaks, and 32-1 regular season conference record, is doing little with his talent.

We've been penalized more than our opponent in both numbers and yardage in each game so far, so the officials aren't a positive factor for us. As for staggering after getting punched in the mouth, ask Bowling Green how badly we staggered after their pick-six on our opening drive...77-3 the rest of the game, IIRC.

God I hate OSU and its foul mouthed fans...
Fuck off, Hoosier daddy...

Im guessing they believe in the cult logic that the amount of penalties does not matter. One team could have 15 and the other could have 3 but the refs were on 15s side because 1 of 3s was a "momentum killing" call.
