Game Thread Ohio State vs Indiana, 10/08/16 @ 3:30 ET, ESPN/WatchESPN

I don't analyze stats the way I used to because, frankly, I just don't care anymore.

I don't care as much about football
I don't care as much about numbers
I never did care about much else

So I have to wonder if there is more to the Buckeye's slow starts this year than I think...

The slow starts are quantifiable to a point. For example, they've scored on the 1st possession of only one game, and that was a field goal after Marshon Lattimore gave them the ball in field goal range. On the next 9 possessions of each game, the Buckeyes have scored 75% of the time, with 25 of those 27 scores being touchdowns.

I was about to dig deeper than this, but I stopped because, to be honest I don't think this means a damn thing. It's not because the players aren't going hard, and I don't for a moment believe it's something to be concerned about.

So is that just my apathetic attitude talking and there's something behind the slow starts, or am I right in thinking this is a meaningless aberration?

Whatever the answer to that question, the good news is that I don't care either way

Im guessing they believe in the cult logic that the amount of penalties does not matter. One team could have 15 and the other could have 3 but the refs were on 15s side because 1 of 3s was a "momentum killing" call.

I'm guessing that Ohio State will win by something like 42 - 10; and the "IU cult" fans in attendance will just leave "da "Shoe" mumbling "Is it basketball season yet?".

Yeah, 54-4 overall record, national title, B1G title, four straight division titles, all-time record 30-game conference win streak, two 20-game win streaks, and 32-1 regular season conference record, is doing little with his talent.

We've been penalized more than our opponent in both numbers and yardage in each game so far, so the officials aren't a positive factor for us. As for staggering after getting punched in the mouth, ask Bowling Green how badly we staggered after their pick-six on our opening drive...77-3 the rest of the game, IIRC.

Fuck off, Hoosier daddy...

Well stated. Now post it on their board

I have pretty much gotten to the same place but I'm not sure I'd call it apathy.

More like football is just hard to apply statistical analysis to. Overcoming lots of random variance in a hopelessly small sample size is the brick wall I've given up trying to bash down with my forehead.

That's it

Hopelessly small sample size is the reason why, as much as I'm fascinated by numbers, I've never bet real money on a football game, college or pro, in my life. It's also the reason I think there's (probably) nothing to the slow starts.

There's probably more to my apathy than that, but I don't care enough to figure out what it might be

Yeah. I bet football but just because i know the game (relatively speaking, lol) and am confident in my gut.

You want to bet on a numbers based game then baseball is your huckleberry. Lots of interesting work being done there.

The point isnt whether IU will beat osu this Saturday...its not letting them rub it in our faces as they try to do year after year. Sometimes you fight back even when theres little chance to win....you keep your pride...never let them see you sweat..,and never, ever give them credit for anything...they havent earned it as fans. The team maybe....but not osu fans, the worlds worst, most obnoxious base of pinheads in sports, right there with Philly fans. Spit in their eye...they deserve it. The fans confuse themselves thinking theyre the team...and oh they aint close to that kind of class.

Ha. This is a couple of steps below finding someone on BWI saying something like "let's all go throw bags of urine at fans of the visiting team."

Part of me wonders if the slow starts are just the OCs and DCs feeling out the opposition and adjusting. It seems like once the team gets a couple of series under their belts, they shut down whatever opponents are doing.

Summary:

1. Ohio State is soft
2. Ohio State has "big ego" problems
3. Urban "Meyers" is not a good coach
4. "Meyers" has done very little with the team's talent
5. Big Ten officials throw games in favor of Ohio State

Any of this sound familiar?

This sounds like my very first game in the Shoe. My Dad took me to my first game and we sat in Section 6A and watched the Bucks take on the Hoosiers. I think the year was 1972. If I remember correctly Indy scored first to lead 7-0. A couple of Indiana fans were sitting behind us and started talking among themselves that the if you hit the "big boys" in the mouth and challenge them they will wilt and more such talk ensured the longer Indiana stayed ahead which I think was until halftime. It got a lot quieter in the second half and I realized they had left sometime in the third quarter. Final score Good Guys 44 Indiana 7.....

This is such a ridiculous theory.

Here's mine: Big boys become big boys by punching little boys in the mouth. My theory helps explain why Ohio State is 72-12-5 all-time against Indiana.
