Game Thread Ohio State vs Army, 09/16/17 @ 4:30 ET (FOX)

Rewatching some of JTs throws. The ball takes so freaking long to reach its man when we're trying to run a screen. Every defender in the stadium has time to adjust.

I am certain beyond doubt that Haskins would be huge not just for our downfield passing game, but also towards making our bubble screens more effective. Which then sets up the intermediate passing game, which sets up the run game, and so on... Our offense would be better in every phase. Sure, he might not know the whole playbook - but it's not like we can use the entire playbook anyway with JT.

Nothing that hasn't been said before, but I felt like throwing it out there.

It's also clear at this point that Urban prioritizes not turning the ball over / managing the game, over a QB who can win the game with his arm but is also willing to take some shots. The problem is that his strategy hasn't won a national title for anyone without clearly superior talent, like ever.

Alabama does it because they're just better coached and more talented everywhere than anyone they face. And if you watch their QB this year, even he can string it on a line when he needs to.

Bottom line: we'll do fine against Army and Purdue and Nebraska, make it a game against Michigan and Penn State, but let's hold off on Alabama and Clemson. Just disappointing to me that we're willing to waste one of the best DL in school history

I only want us to go to the playoffs if Haskins is starting tbh. I saw enough last year to know those bubble screens get blown the hell up by a playoff team. I think the defense will look like a top 25 defense come November though. I just have no faith in JT at this point. None. He displayed all of the exact same problems he had last week. We just grossly out talented our opponent.
I think the defense is not where I thought it would be the DL is ok but after that we are substandard.

Remember when we beat Alabama despite turning the ball over twice? Remember when we beat Oregon's ass by 3TDs despite losing the turnover battle 4 to freaking 1? Really 4-0 since Mariotta's TO was on the last play of the game. Seems like so long ago when the offense played with any true swagger regardless of the circumstances.

It's a little hard for me to gauge the defense because the competition we've faced the first 3 games so far is better than last year. I mean as bad as the defense looked against Oklahoma, they absolutely played well enough to win. The offense completely hung them out to dry the entire first half against arguably the best offense in the country. Hell the 2016 defense probably doesn't perform that much better under the circumstances. OU's offense probably won't be held to under 40 points until they get to the playoffs if they make it. I throw out all games against Indiana. They play out of their minds regardless of personnel. Despite my hand wringing OSU defense played great against an offense that gives most teams fits if you never see it. This game was over pretty much by the 3rd quarter while Navy has taken OSU to the wire the last two times they played. Objectively the best performance against a triple option team OSU defense has had in awhile.

Compare that to last year when we faced a terrible Bowling Green team, a very good Tulsa team in a monsoon, and Oklahoma when the offense was capable of consistently stringing together positive drives.

Yes the defense deserved this performance yesterday.. As you pointed out this is a system that typically gives us a lot of struggles and while they got a few yards we stiffened when we NEEDED it. That 5 yards passing Army got helps the average out too which is outstanding lol..

With UNLV next week being the worst team we will play all year the defense has got to show up and build off yesterday's progress

Didn't do a damned thing to improve... threw a crap load of passes Into the flats, for the most part have Dobbins too few of carries and didn't give Haskins a damn chance. Accomplished nothing and yet we will talk about making progress.

Don't like it then ignore me but I'm through blasting cup cakes by jus purely being better then someone. I dont fault Kevin because he tried to start slow and give JT confidence and the second he tried to open it up we have to punt because JT can't connect.

It's black and white to me now... We don't have a chance and sorry if that makes you guys uncomfortable after a victory but we didn't do anything I was hoping we would do

Hey, at the very least throwing those bubble screens opened up things later on. The 20 yard TD pass was off a bubble fake. Wilson is doing the best he can with Urban's garbage playbook.

Actually... The flats stuff and speed options are probably positives. Did we do the stuff we want to see well? No.

But step one to spread is spreading. It's as much a process as anything.

When Meyer came here, someone (without naming names) distributed a ppt about the philosophy of Meyers offense (Utah edition). We don't do that anymore. Yesterday was more like that than I've seen in a while.

There's work to do for sure, but back to basics is good.

Hopefully we can do a fake to the flats and hit a 9 route off the fake. When it's there that's when we have to hit it.

It's going to take work to get people to bite on certain looks and that's really when JT has to hit a guy for a big gainer. It'll be there at some point though if we continue to have success underneath. Just have to keep building off this performance
