Ohio State vs #14 Wisconsin (official game thread)

You may fault me for not quite sharing your unbridled optimism, but until I see cause for it...
I don't have unbridled optimism... I also don't have unbridled pessimism ("it's going to be damn near impossible"). Coming on here to tell us that you'll bet with the chalk (NIT) and reminding us "we need to score more than the other team" isn't overly useful to me.

What's the goal? To convince us that the season is over?
Still, if we were improving over the last half of the season, that would be a positive point. Yet, if anything, it seems we're regressing.
Koufos isn't improving? Diebler? Lauderdale? Butler's not made to carry an entire offenes on his back... and that's catching up with him imo... both physically and mentally.

I love the fire they showed out there, both on defense and especially rebounding. There were breakdowns, and Packer was right to call out Turner's "watching", but I like the general picture of what they're bringing. OSU hasn't rebounded well under Matta (one of my major gripes), so improvements in that regard are certainly notable. Whether they continue is yet to be seen.
Going into today, we were playing four ranked teams over our final five games of the season (Wisconsin, @Indiana, @Minnesota, Purdue, and Michigan State). Winning the three home games in that set were crucial, and now we've already lost one of them. Should we win all of the last four, 21-10 and 12-6 in conference may give us a glimmer of hope. Just one loss puts us at 20-11 and 11-7 in conference which likely won't do it. Going 2-2 over the last four will be tough enough to do, and 19-12 and 10-8 in conference puts the nail in the coffin.
There is also a b10 conf which can make or break OSU, if they can pull out at least 2 of the next 3 big ones. Beating fragile IU & equally streaky MSU are anything but impossible endevours.

End up 20-13 with wins over IU, MSU & Purdue... and they will have a reason to watch on Selection Sunday.

End up 21-13 and they'll be in, imo.

I was very impressed with this squad today.

Unfortunently we didn't get some free throws that could've been called in the last 2 mins.

I do believe we can still get these wins if we play like we did today, especially on IU, MSU, and Minn (obviously).

I'm not saying the refs f*cked us. When I say this, I mean, they could've called those fouls in the last minutes, not should've.

Great game today though.

Never realized Thad wasn't back to 100%.. I thought he was just a one and done surgery thing. Props to that man for being a basketball coach.

I like were you're coming from JWINS, I agree with everything you are saying.

.....but please don't confuse that hack Billy Packer with one of favorites Pat Rafferty. Packer is like nails on a chalkboard.

I don't care what you find "useful" to you. I wasn't even talking to you initially. I don't have "unbridled pessimism", I have objective realism. Whether you want to accept it or not, it is going to be very, very difficult for us to make the big dance.

I agree... Only way we get into the dance now is either Winning our tourney or winning out the rest of the season. I don't see us doing either so NIT is probably where we're going. We're just too young/inexperienced thats all. Ya gata feel for Butler/Twigs

I'll start by saying that I really liked the effort, especially on the glass. If you would have told me we would have outrebounded Wisconsin, I would have called you a liar. If you said we would out rebound them and still lose, I would have called you crazy. Such is life.

Was a really sloppy game from both teams. Thought the same thing about Memphis-Tennessee, it was a close game but that didn't make it good basketball. People throwing the ball away constantly, out of control, lots of fouls (even if they aren't getting called), just sloppy basketball.

Diebler needed to shoot more, I think Thad saw that late and started running multiple screens for him but he couldn't get free and when he got one decent look he missed it, but he has to take more than 3 shots. Just seemed like he didn't touch the ball much this game.

Its way too late in the season for Turner to be timid with the ball. He needs to shoot when he is open and drive whenever possible. He isn't really doing either right now.

What in the world was Hunter doing shooting a three? That said, solid defensive game, and he did ok on the low block when he got a touch, he needs to demand the ball more.

KK disappeared with 17 minutes left, missed way too many layups down that stretch. Though to be fair the whole team missed way too many layups in general.

My biggest issue with this game was the coaching, especially late in the second half. Thad has to realize, when your down 5 with 6 minutes left, that its going to be a close game. Since its going to be a close game, you might want to in a situation where you can foul to put the other team in the bonus. Get a couple of reach-ins early in the shot clock, get to around 5 team fouls so if you need to start fouling you can. 42 seconds left and we only have 3 team fouls, thats just lack of game awareness.

However, even bigger than the foul issue was the team's lack of ability to get a good shot off with 42 seconds left, and I put that squarely on Thad's shoulders. As a coach, you have to be able to draw up a play that can get you a good look quickly. Then when Diebler tripped and we called timeout again, you have to realize right there that you need to basically shoot coming off the inbound. I realize we executed poorly, and there really wasn't any reason that KK should have passed up that three from the corner when he was open and instead forced Butler to launch it. But as a head coach you have to be able to draw up something that can put your team in a position to win, and I didn't feel like Thad did that here. 2 timeouts for one possession that ended with Butler jacking up a 25 footer with 2 seconds left on the shot clock and a man in his face? Unacceptable.

I think that we get in if we can win 3 of our last 4 and then win a game in the BTT. That would put us at 21-12 with at least 2 wins over ranked teams in that span. I don't know if we can do it, but thats what we need.

OSU MEN'S BASKETBALL
WISCONSIN 58
OHIO STATE 53

Badgers beat sliding Bucks

Monday, February 25, 2008 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus -- The last thing Ohio State needs, with its NCAA Tournament hopes waning with every missed opportunity, is any internal turmoil.
Benching point guard Jamar Butler, the Buckeyes' leading scorer and only senior in the regular starting lineup, for the first four minutes Sunday didn't cause the 58-53 loss to Wisconsin that followed, but it sure didn't help.
While fellow senior Matt Terwilliger acknowledged the situation as a "team issue," men's coach Thad Matta attempted to explain away Butler not starting for the first time in 97 games, since the start of his sophomore year.
@StoryAd
"My decision," Matta said twice, while also saying that Butler did not break any team rules. Matta then said he thought the group that did start -- Kosta Koufos and Othello Hunter inside and David Lighty and Jon Diebler on the wing, with freshman Evan Turner running the point -- had practiced well together all week. However, he didn't go back to that lineup the rest of the way, with Butler playing the final 36 minutes.

Buckeyes just can't break the Badgers
Monday, February 25, 2008
BY Mike Popovich
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS Matt Terwilliger had a hard time expressing his frustration over Ohio State's latest setback.

"It's really undescribable," the Buckeyes senior forward said. "I mean, I really can't find the words to tell you."

The silence inside Value City Arena after Sunday's game against Wisconsin told the story. Some fans already may be resigned to their team's apparent fate.

A 58-53 loss to the Badgers dropped the Buckeyes down the NCAA tournament at-large contenders pecking order. The loss was Ohio State's second straight and fourth in the last six games.

Facing the No. 11 Badgers, the Buckeyes (17-10, 8-6) had a great chance to enhance their NCAA hopes. Instead they dropped to 1-7 on the season against ranked opponents and 0-8 versus teams in the RPI top 40.

Ohio State has four regular season games left, three against 20-win teams. Time is running out for the Buckeyes to build some momentum and gain the signature win they desperately need.
