Was gone all weekend and was perusing the USA Track & Field National Championships results and saw a couple of current/former Buckeyes:

Brian Olinger finished 12th in the 3000m steeplechase final with a time of 8:49.37.

Jeff See once again qualified for the 1500m finals. He finished 9th today with a time of 3:45.87.

And the best news of all, former Buckeye Dan Taylor finished 2nd in the shot put with a throw of 21.21m (69'7"). With this finish Dan has qualified to represent the United States at this years World Championships in Berlin, Germany. Congrats Dan!

Ohio State Claims Unofficial Victory at the Spartan Invitational
Roys, Pupino place in the Top 10 for the Scarlet and Gray

Sept. 14, 2012

The Ohio State men's cross country team claimed an unofficial victory at the 8k Auto Owners Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich., Friday afternoon.

Although the meet was not scored and therefore no winner declared, the Buckeyes cumulative placements in the standings would have given the team a victory under normal circumstances. Host Michigan State was the unofficial runner-up.

Senior Donny Roys was the top runner of the day for the Scarlet and Gray. Competing in his first meet of the season, the Medina, Ohio, native crossed the finish line in a fifth-place time of 25:00. Joining Roys in the Top 10 was freshman Nick Pupino, who placed seventh in 25:02.

"I was very pleased with how we ran today, especially during the second half of the race," distance coach Brice Allen said after the meet. "The team was extremely competitive. I like the direction we are headed [in]."

Rounding out scoring for the team were Curtis Hanle (14th, 25:15), Josh Sabo (15th, 25:16) and Jordan Redd (35th, 25:40).

I'm not sure if this is the right spot for the post but.. I have a family friend who just ran a 14:52 in the XC 3 mile race as a Junior. He is a big fan of Ohio State, but hasn't heard from them at this point. I also noticed that the entire XC roster comes from the state of Ohio, does anyone have an experience with the process? Does Ohio State recruit nationally?

Dang, that's a pretty good time. Have any other schools been in contact with him?

I'm not sure how the new coaching staff approaches recruiting, especially out of state. With some sports like cross country and track it is not out of the ordinary for recruits to contact schools they have interest in... that is sometimes their only avenue to garner interest since most schools don't put on camps like football does. The worst they can say is "thanks for your interest, but no thanks", although with the kind of time your family friend ran I'm sure there would be a bit more of a discussion than that.

I also noticed that the entire XC roster comes from the state of Ohio, does anyone have an experience with the process? Does Ohio State recruit nationally?
Just like any other sport, most elite runners want to go to the great programs... Wisconsin, Oregon, Oklahoma St., Colorado, etc. Since Ohio State is not a historically good cross country program, although Robert Gary made some big strides to change that before he was fired, his philosophy was to attempt to get the big guns in Ohio first and land a few solid out of state recruits. Again, I'm not sure what the new coaching staff will focus on.

Ohio State Finishes 13th at the Notre Dame Invitational
Roys and Sabo place in the individual Top 40

Sept. 28, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's cross country team finished 13th overall in the Blue Division race at the 8k Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon.

With a team score of 296, the Buckeyes performed well in a tightly contested race. 20th-ranked Tulsa captured the team title with 104 points, followed by No. 17 Princeton (139 points) and host and 24th-ranked Notre Dame (143).

"When you enter a major invitational and there are 12 nationally ranked-teams you hope not to finish 13th but that's where we're at and I believe we can make improvements going into Wisconsin," Ohio State distance coach Brice Allen said after the race. "The squad is young, but we're healthy and motivated."

Senior Donny Roys led the Buckeye effort at the Notre Dame Golf Course, turning in a personal-best time of 24:14 to finish in 25th. Donny Roys Selected for NCAA Championships
Roys automatically qualifies based on NCAA regional finish

Nov. 13, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State men's cross country senior Donny Roys has been selected to compete at the NCAA Championships Saturday, Nov. 17, in Louisville, Ky.

"I'm excited about the performance Donny gave at the regional this past Friday," Brice Allen, associate head coach of the Buckeyes, said. "He showed amazing patience the first 9,000 meters and that allowed him punch his ticket to the championships with a strong final 1,000 meters."

Roys, a native of Medina, Ohio, was an automatic qualifier based on his individual finish at the Great Lakes Regional in Madison, Wis., Nov. 9. At the regional, Roys finished 11th-place overall with a time of 31:19 on the 10k course.

"This season I have seen Donny go from a good cross country runner to a potentially great one," Allen said. "We are extremely excited for him to represent us at the NCAA Championships this Saturday."

Of other note, since there are numerous MAC alum on this board, Toledo women were chosen as an at-large team and Michael Heller of Kent State and Julie Accurso of Ohio also qualified for Nationals based on their Regional places. Accurso was the Regional Champion and has a shot at winning the individual National title.

Really great season overall for Donny, regardless of how he runs at Nationals.

I had high hopes for this year, thinking that a top four of Roys, Meyer, Fallon, and Brajdic could all potentially be all-region and then hope one of the young guys stepped up as a #5. Turned out that Meyer left the team, and Fallon and Brajdic both disappeared (injury, decision to redshirt??). I think if you plug in those three, OSU would have been right there with IU, MSU, and ND (who had Rae DNF). But that obviously did not happen.

Many of the young guys showed some promise at one time or another throughout the year, especially Hannaford, Sabo, Pupino, Hanle, Tanfeff, and Redd. You add in Brajdic and maybe Fallon (not sure if he still has eligibility) plus perhaps an impact freshman and that is a decent group. Wisconsin loses all its big guns, as does IU. MSU and Purdue both have young promising teams, but this group will hopefully be right there with them. Michigan looks to return a strong team.

Dumford has already pledged to ND and Glines to Michigan. Hopefully OSU can land at least (and hopefully both) of Wharton and Prakel. I have heard that OSU is in on Burcham from WV, which would be a massive get if it happens (4:02 miler). Jacob Thomson out of Louisville Holy Cross is another huge stud, not sure if he has any OSU interest, but with Allen coming from Louisville I hope maybe he has some pull down there.

But for now, good luck to Donny at Nationals! He was 122nd last year - a top 100 finish would be a great cap to his XC career.

Donny Roys finished 118th at Nationals (30:53.6). Just to tell how close the field was, if he would have ran just 10 seconds faster, that's only 1 second per kilometer in the 10K race, he would have cracked the top 100.

Oklahoma State ran away with the team title (72 points). Wisconsin (135), Colorado (158), Northern Arizona (191) and Florida State (238) round out the top 5. The other Big Ten teams running today were Indiana (18th, 456), Michigan (23rd, 518), and Michigan State (31st, 755, good for last place).
