I hear ya - my dad was a confused young man once and went to that school up there......I grew up watching the game with him and my sisters would root for whoever Dad was rooting for, and then there was me...no one in the house was an OSU fan but dammit first time I watched them I was hooked. I remember taking multiple 10 minute dinner breaks from the family to watch the 97 Rose Bowl, or being an enraged 11 year old in 98 and finding out OSU lost to the bums little brother. Now it's taking a turn with my daughter, and I'm raising her right, but nothing will ever match the in-house nerves when it came to the game, and bragging rights, and knowing whoever won was going to smash it in the others face. My dad passed in '04, likely an after effect of OSU's title in 03, and just in time to avoid the shadow of OSU's dominance from fully overtaking. I can still smell the chili dogs he'd make for the game, all of it made THE game what it is for me. I have no idea what my point is except that like you, there was that something more to the rivalry that makes it what it is for us and no other event can compare to.

4) Keep pass rush at bay. Can't get behind in drives.

Lesser point but still really important. Interested to see if Day calls more screens to keep the pass rush less aggressive. Thought there'd be a lot more of that against PSU.

Just for sh*ts and giggles, I looked at some numbers.

Mind you, I'm not a stats guy, but I was curious is TTUN's passing game is suddenly on fire or if they've faced teams with inferior pass defenses.

Here's what I got based on current stats, not the stats at the time when TTUN played each opponent. TTUN's passing total in the game against each opponent is on the X-Axis. The respective opponent's stat (be it their current passing defense ranking, passing defense yards per completion allowed, etc.) is on the Y-axis.

Not much of a correlation, but I thought I'd post it anyway in case somebody else sees something. Nonetheless, Patterson's performance against MSU and Indiana was against two pretty lousy pass defenses (but not as bad as Maryland's).

One of the things that's interesting, not related to TTUN's passing game is this: that Ryan Day chose to go very rush heavy against Penn State's #79 ranked pass defense in the country.

Old Bike Hart, fucking classic. Wore nothing but S&G all week and tomorrow will be no different. The Game is and always has been The Game. Stakes couldn't be higher, and neither could my confidence in this team. They will definitely play us tough at their place in Harbaugh's last game against Ohio State, but I have faith in our boys. This is going to be an epic game.
