Game Thread Ohio State @ Penn State - 09/29/18, 7:30PM (ABC)

PRESSER BULLETS: URBAN MEYER LOOKS AHEAD TO SATURDAY'S SHOWDOWN WITH PENN STATE

With five days to go until one of Ohio State's most anticipated games of the season at Penn State on Saturday (7:44 p.m., ABC), Urban Meyer met with the media to recap the Buckeyes' 49-6 win over Tulane this past weekend and look ahead to this upcoming week's pivotal Big Ten contest.

In addition to talking about what he described as "obviously a huge game," Meyer also provided updates on several players who did not play against Tulane, including defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Robert Landers and running back Brian Snead, as well as running back Mike Weber, who left Saturday's game early due to injury.

Here's what you need to know from Meyer's press conference:
  • Champions from Saturday's over Tulane: Isaiah Prince, Michael Jordan, Thayer Munford, Demetrius Knox, Malcolm Pridgeon, Luke Farrell, J.K. Dobbins, K.J. Hill, Terry McLaurin, Johnnie Dixon, Austin Mack, Binjimen Victor, Dwayne Haskins, Tyler Friday, Kendall Sheffield, Isaiah Pryor and Jordan Fuller
  • On Victor: "His last two games have been really, really good."
  • Nick Bosa will not play this week. "It's going to be a few more weeks, but we expect him back."
  • Robert Landers will play this week after sitting out Saturday's game due to injury.
  • Brian Snead did not play again Saturday because of a "violation of team rules" that Ohio State is monitoring. It has not yet been determined whether he will make the trip to Penn State.
  • Mike Weber is expected to play this week after suffering a foot strain against Tulane.
  • On the report that Ryan Day could become Ohio State's coach-in-waiting: "I haven't given any thought to it. Ryan is an exceptional coach."
  • Meyer said feedback from quarterbacks on the recruiting trail has been "very positive." "A lot of them want to do what we're doing right now."
  • Meyer said he has had conversations with Bosa about how to handle his recovery and eventual return, in regard to his potential to play in the NFL after this season. He said he has been told by Bosa's parents that they trust the program.
  • Meyer described Trace McSorley as a "winner" and "competitor."
  • Meyer said Bosa has told him that he wants to return to play this season.
  • Meyer said he isn't placing any extra emphasis on this game in terms of its importance to winning the game in his motivation this week because "there's so much football to be played."
  • On Penn State's road environment: "It's one of the tops in the country."
  • Dre'Mont Jones and Tuf Borland have been among the Buckeyes' top leaders on defense this season. Wide receivers Parris Campbell, Terry McLaurin and Johnnie Dixon were also praised again for their leadership.
  • On Penn State running back Miles Sanders: "That running back's really good." Said the Buckeyes "don't see much difference at all" in Penn State's offense from last season, also praising the offensive line and receivers.
  • Meyer said there will be conversation later in the week reminding the team about its loss at Penn State two years ago.

TCU Experience Helps, But Playing at PSU ‘Different’ Per Dwayne Haskins

Ohio-State-football-quarterbacks-Dwayne-Haskins-Tate-Martell.jpg

Business is about to pick up for the Ohio State football team and redshirt sophomore starting quarterback Dwayne Haskins.

Haskins has performed better than anyone could have realistically expected and has led the Buckeyes to a 4-0 record this season. With double-digit wins over Oregon State, Rutgers, TCU, and Tulane to start the season, things now change considerably as Ohio State heads off for it first road game of the season.

And it’s not just any road game. It’s the most difficult road game the Buckeyes have on their schedule every other year. It’s time for a trip to Penn State.

And per usual it will be a night game (7:30 pm kickoff) and a White Out for the Nittany Lion crowd.

There are plenty of key Buckeyes on this roster who haven’t really experienced what it’s like to play in this game and in that venue.

Composure is going to be key.

“What do I know about the White Out?” Haskins said after the Tulane game. “It gets pretty loud over there, I know that.”

While he may not be a captain, Dwayne Haskins is most definitely a leader on this Ohio State team. So often, how the quarterback goes is how the game goes, which should give Buckeye fans and coaches at least a tiny bit of comfort.

After all, all Haskins has ever done in tough spots is perform well. He did it in Ann Arbor last season off the bench and he did it in TCU country about 10 days ago.

Both of those games will help Haskins in Happy Valley, but for the other young players on the team, having gone to TCU will help them as well.

“Playing against TCU last week got us ready for this game coming up,” Haskins said. “Last time we went to Happy Valley we didn’t get a happy taste in our mouth, so we’re excited for this one.”

Can someone who is in the know talk to the team and make sure they understand the importance of beating PSU back to the stone age?

I just want PSU to regret ever joining the B10. Like to really start asking why in earth they decided to do this to themselves.

I say get up and keep pounding. Since the old saying may have never happened maybe Urb can say " the reason we went for 2 up by 76 points was because we couldn't go for 3". Please let that happen....LOL

Nothing crazy for drops. If we want to play that game lets put the 6-10 drops and 1-2 scores that Dwayne should have lol.

Seriously though nothing more than what is normal regardless of what I'm sure PED fans say. They are no where near as good our wide though

I saw a good chunk of one game and saw a pretty brutal drop then they flashed a stat that showed a significant number for the season to date. So based on that scientific research I think they do have a case of the drops this year but to be fair McSlappy isn't exactly hyper accurate.

He's a twitchy little fucker who gets happy feet but can hurt you when he does run.

Containing him and the RB in the read option and RPO game is the key.

a bunch of stuff...

Bold: Good to hear.
Bold Underline: So said everyone in every program in America not named 'Bama. And that's cuz they're taking care of things pretty well on their own.

OHIO STATE PREPARING TO PLAY IN ONE OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL'S TOUGHEST ROAD ENVIRONMENTS AT PENN STATE

96872_h.jpg

No road environment has tested the Ohio State football team quite as much in recent years as Penn State’s Beaver Stadium.

The Buckeyes were defeated in their last trip to State College in 2016, when Penn State scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to upset Ohio State, a win that would ultimately make the difference in the Nittany Lions winning the Big Ten East title.

Two years earlier, the Buckeyes needed double overtime to earn a 31-24 win over the Nittany Lions in Happy Valley, in a game that would have crushed the College Football Playoff hopes of the eventual national champions if they hadn’t escaped with a victory on a Joey Bosa walk-off sack.

Ohio State’s game against Penn State this Saturday (7:44 p.m., ABC) would loom as a tough game no matter where it was being played, considering that the Nittany Lions are 4-0, ranked No. 9 in the nation and currently No. 1 in the Football Bowl Subdivision in points scored per game (55.5).

There’s no question, though, that making the trip to University Park increases the degree of difficulty for the Buckeyes.

“It's just a difficult place. Certainly one of the top five stadiums to play in, hard to play in,” Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said Monday. “Very loud and the fans are very into it just like our Horseshoe. You've got to be ready for that kind of environment.”

Saturday’s game will be Ohio State’s first true road game of the season, since its only previous game away from home so far this season against TCU was technically a neutral-site game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas (where Ohio State fans made up a majority of the crowd despite the game being just a short drive away from TCU).

While the Buckeyes’ 40-28 win over the Horned Frogs did help prepare them to play Penn State – as it was Ohio State’s first big game of the season, and TCU was unbeaten and ranked in the top 15 nationally at the time – they know that playing at Beaver Stadium, where a “White Out” is planned for Saturday’s game, will be a different level of challenge.

“It’s different playing at Penn State. It’s at their house,” Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins said Saturday. “Playing at AT&T Stadium was kind of a neutral site for us, because we have a really great fan base. But playing at Penn State, as a recruit going to their games in high school and (knowing) how loud it can get over there, going my freshman year and seeing how hectic it can get, I just want to focus on how we can execute at the maximum level.”

I haven't seen anything about this, but thought I'd ask....

Has anyone heard of any cases of negative recruiting coming from Franklin in the wake of the investigation and suspension? Urban doesn't seem like the kind of guy to let by-gones be by-gones in cases like this......
